Backgrounds. Alginate impression material is a material to make impression of teeth and oral cavity. Theresult will be reproduced by gypsum type III. Alginate impression material can modify with cassava starch with ratio 1:1.The major composition is algin or alginat acid and cassava starch composition are amylose 25 % andamylopectine 75 %. Material and methods. Alginate impression type normal setting, cassava starch, aquadestilata, light microscope and polarization microscope. Result. Microscopic structure alginate impression with light microscope showed that birefringence structure less than birefringence structure alginate impression with cassaca starch. When the structure is changed, the crystallite of cassava starch will be changed. Conclusions. The added cassava starch to alginate impression microscopically will not form a new chemical compound, will not change the molecule structure of alginate impression, without any chemical reaction between alginate impression with cassava starch and only produce the physical bond.

Caries of tooth occurs when there is interaction between four etiology factors, such us : tooth surface, substrat, microorganism, and time. The substrat will fermented by microorganism and produce acidity. This acidity caused some components of tooth released, called demineralization. One of the tooth major component is calcium. One way to prevent demineralization is inhibit the activity of microorganism. One of traditional plant that can be use is Piper betle L. The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficiency of Piper betle L. extract to inhibit calsium ion of tooth release. Twelve maxillary first premolars were divided into three groups. The first group (A) was immersed in synthetic saliva and S. mutans, the second group (B) in synthetic saliva, sucrose and S. mutans, and the third group (C) in synthetic saliva, sucrose, S. mutans and Piper betle L extract, for 24 hours each. To identify the calcium ion oftooth release into the immersion media, each sample was tested by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The results show that group C has the lowest mean. It was concluded that Piper betle L. is efficient to inhibit the calsium ion of tooth release.

Acrylic Resin is often used in dentistry as denture. Colour stability of denture materials is one of primary factor for estetic. Acrylic denture bas is easy to permeate bevero know effect of coloring beverages in color stability. Colour changing of resin can be occurred by consuming colouring beverages, such as tea, coffee, wine, juice and chocolate. Colour changing of colour is not permanent in acrylic resin, and can be removed by brushing and polishing.

The reconstruction of bone defects remains a challenge for the oral surgeon until now, because the healing process is often susceptible to interference or even failure. To assist the process of bone healing, do therapy by using a material or the bone graft substitute material. Bone graft should have three basic functions such as osteogenesis, osteoinduction and osteoconduction. The high level of bone graft demands led to the researchers and surgeons continue to develop biomaterials as an alternative. The use of autografts is still the gold standart for the restoration of bone defects. One of the bioceramics are frequently used in biomedical applications as an ingredientsubstitution therapy or bone graft is a synthetic hydroxyapatite. The composition of hydroxyapatite crystals have an overview identical to hydroxyapatite in bone. This material is biocompatible, osteokonduktif, and can be fused with the bone so that it can improve the process of bone regeneration.

Mastication movement is interaction of some component, such as teeth, mastication musclary, and temporomandibular joint/ TMJ. TMJ is connective joint between mandible and maxilla. In its function, TMJ need teeth and musculary that worked integrally and sinergitic. Tooth missing case, especially in posterior region, can cause disordes in mastication movement, and finally it caused TMJ disorder.

The efficacy of biomaterials-either as replacements for damaged tissues, or as a temporary scaffolds for the manufacture of engineered tissues and organs- relies on the ability of the material surface to regulate cell adhesion. Adhesion plays a critical role to regulate proliferation, differentiation and phenotypic behaviour, therefore consequently impact tissue development and function. Cell adhesion to biomaterials may be characterized in terms of specific and nonspecific interactions. Specific interaction entail cell receptor recognition, whereas nonspecific interaction encompass noncovalent attractive forces. This paper gives a review of the phenomena occuring in cell/material interaction and particularly the role of cell adhesion

Preparation level prior to conduct dental filling results in smear layer. When smear layer is too thick, it will disturb the adhesion of restoration material to cavity wall, therefore it needs cleansing using dentin conditioner. One of cleansing materials for smear layer is acid with low concentration like citrate acid, hydrogen peroxide, and 10% of polyacrilate acid (Sutrisno, 2005). The use of natural materials in dental practice is an alternative and may minimize the side efect, one of them is belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi L). This study is experimental laboratory aimed at analysing the potential of cleansing force of belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi L) juice on the smear layer of cavity wall of tooth prepared. Ten samples of incisive teeth of cows were prepared with circle-shaped class 1 cavity design with 5 mm in diameter, 2,5 mm in depth in one third from the center of dental labial surface. Subsequently, 5 samples were polished with 10% of poliacrylic acid, the other 5 samples were polished 100% of belimbing wuluh juice, allowed for 10 seconds and irrigated with sterile aquades and dried. The samples were examined for their cleanliness from smear layer using SEM with 5000x magnifying. The result showed average value of cleanliness of the cavity bottom from smear applied with 10 % of polyacrilate acid was lower compared to the group with 100% of belimbing wuluh juice. Statistically, it showed a significant difference between the control group (10 % of polyacrilate acid) and treatment group (100% of belimbing wuluh juice). In conclusion, 100% of belimbing wuluh juicen has potential as dentin conditioner.

Iodine is an essential element for humans. It is concentrated in the thyroid gland and become a vital component of thyroid hormones. Reduced concentration of iodine causes iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are often called goiter. Thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland directly affect bone growth, bone maturation and physical height. Anthropometry is often used to measure the nutritional status of community. This study aims to determine the differences in anthropometry of goitrous and normal children. This study was an observational-analytic study with cross-sectional data. The sample was children of primary school, aged 72-90 months in the Sumbersari and Mayang subdistrict, Jember. Sample size was 100 people each group. The data collected was the degree of goiter (palpation method), physical height (using microtoise) and body weight (using a digital scale). The measurement results are also calculated based on the Z-score.Analysis of data using t-test.The results showed that average physical height of goitrous children was 113.53 ± 5.20 cm and the value of Zscore was -1.28 ± 0.98 SD. In non goitrous children average physical height was 117.59 ± 8.40 cm and -0.94 ± 1.41 SD (Zscore values). The average body weight of goitrous children was 18.5 ± 3.40 kg and -0.97 ± 1.13 SD (Z-score values). The average body weight of non goitrous children was 20.68 ± 10.82 kg and -0.18 ± 1.46 SD (Z-score values). T-test analysis results indicate the existence of differences in physical height and body weight in goitrous children and non goitrous children were significant. Physical height is associated with chronic malnutrition. Hypothyroidism in goitrous patients may reduce the secretion of T3 and T4 hormones, which are growth hormone. Decreasing it can inhibit accretion of linear growth (height) and becomes stunted. Chronic malnutrition that occurs in goitrous children may also predispose to nutritional balance disturbances occurred that resulted in acute malnutrition so the weight is low, as a result of decreased appetite, illness (eg diarrhea, respiratory infections), or due to lack of sufficient food is consumed
