Abstract

Various policies have been implemented by Indonesian government in its efforts to eliminate poverty. This paper proposes BKKBN's (National Family Planning Coordinating Agency) attempts which stress on poverty elimination in non-backward area by way of prosperous family development through expanding rural economic network. The program is started with improving movement of "pride of village" through programs of Plaju (that of Harvesting, Processingand Selling), Pemaju (that of Packaging and Selling), and Penguja (that of Services entrepreneurs) followed by Takesra ( that of Savings for People's Prosperity) and Kukesra (that of Entrepreneurial Credit for Prosperous Family). Through the programs, rural families are expected to play roles in agribusiness and agrobusiness sectors, as well as in small-scale industry. With the benefit gotfrom the programs, it is then expexted that levels of families' income increase consequently, and number of poor families in rural areas can be eliminated.

Abstract

Abortion is a controversial issue that had been a hot public debate in Indonesia after the Warakas tragedy. This article explores the ongoing debate between the so called pro-life and pro-choice groups, and formulate policy recommendations to overcome the abortion problem. The tough policyagainst the abortion would not solve the problem, rather it keeps the unsafe-abortion practised illegally and widely. The Government should be more realistic in dealing with this problem by providingearly abortion service at low cost so that women are protected from unsafe abortion.

Abstract

There are three points to discuss in this paper. The first is to observe influences of economic-structures transformation on rural society's prosperity. The second is to analyze impacts of production factors transformation on traditional economic agents. The third is to scrutinize institutional factors  role on prosperity of rural economic structures. In this paper, rural economic structures can be classified into three groups. They are agricultural, non-agricultural and combination of the two. The result shows that (1) transformation of economic structure has positive impact onfamily's prosperity in rural area. The non agricultural activities tend to stimulate the creation of the prosperity of rural society than the agricultural ones do. (2) Capital and education are very determining factors to improve rural society's prosperity. In the structures of economic combination and non-agricultural, technology also has significant role in increasing society's prosperity. On institutional role, it is known that KUD (Village Unit Cooperation) in its manifestation has not functioned wellas to increase farmers' prosperity.

Abstract

There are evidences that development in the last three decades has succeeded to lower the number of people living under poverty line. However, along with the economic recession this success may not continue, even it may be worsened. This study aims to understand survival strategies of the poor people in rural areas. There are at least four strategies done by the poor people. First of all, the poor people work longer to increase their income. Secondly, because of limited employment opportunity in rural areas, they commute to the city to involve in nonfarm activities. In addition, the poor people try to maximize the utilization of household member to get additional money for the householdor to lower expenditure. The last strategy is to find additional jobs as the mean to increase their income. Insome extends, there are stilla lot of poor people who can not afford all strategies mentioned above, since they have limited access for increasing their income.

Abstract

Children workers are complex problems. On one side, they must work because of poverty, and on another side, they mostly do not get government's protection. Case of Jermal children workers along east sea shore of North Sumatra shows that they are susceptible to exploitation. Some risks they have to face are: high risk of weather and wave of the sea, cruel treatment, forced labour, unguaranteed job s avety and threat of death. The writer of this matter indicates that at least there are three kinds of violations, namely 1) that of human rights,2) that of labour law and 3) that of creation of broken society against social system.

Abstract

This piece of writing is aimed to discuss on how muchpracticeof family planning services have put attention to rights of family planning consummers. The discussion is based on researches carried out either in Indonesia or in other developing countries. In fact, the services in those countries have not given total freedom to clients of family planning to choose contraception devices appropriate to their goals and interests. The services have neither guaranteed the clients' rights to get comprehensive information about contraception nor aboutfamily planningservices. Furthermore, they have not been capable of giving secure services to their clients. From the discussion, the writer offers some issues of research necessary to examine on purpose of protecting family planning consumers' rights.
