Abstract

Pesticides provide economic benefits for the farmers in terms of saving yield loss: but also provide adverse impacts. It is therefore economically inefficient to totally ban the use of pesticides; and consequently, it is required to investigate an efficient level of pesticide use. This paper aims to determine the efficient use of pesticides by internalizing the externality costs, and estimates the monetary value of net welfare loss. The benefit of pesticide use is estimated using a production function and the economic value of the adverse impact on human health and the environment are represented by a health Cost and consumers’ willingness to pay for a kilogram reduction in pesticide use. Panel data on rice production used in this paper is compiled from publication of Indonesian Statistics Agency. The externality costs including are adopted and adjusted from previous researches. The socially efficient use of pesticides is determined when the marginal benefit is equal to the marginal social cost. The results of this study indicated that the efficient use of pesticides is lower than that of actual use. Consequently, there is welfare loss imposed on farmers and other community. The policy implication is that it is preferable for the farmer to use pesticide efficiently.

Abstract

This research analyze about money demand and supply function in 2000.1 to 2004.4 by simultaneous equation approach. From the derivative of money demand equation, we can conclude that the money demand influenced by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) positively and by the exchange rate negatively. By derivating money supply equation, we can conclude that money demand influenced by GDP negatively and by Consumer Price Index positively

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the presence of contagion effect of seasonality in stock markets in the ASEAN region. The study employs the month-end closing prices of each country’s broad based stock market indexes over the period of January 1988 to December 2005. The analysis begins with the re-examination of the existence of seasonality effect in each equity market, separately. Using Granger causality approach, the study finds evidence of causal linkages in the markets with Singapore as the leader in majority of the cases. The time-series regression analysis suggests the presence of contagion effect in that the stock returns ¡n Singapore set the trend in three other markets (Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia). The study further investigates for causal linkages due specifically to seasonality effect. The results deviate from those of the general market performance with respect to the leader-follower linkages but lend strong support to the view that seasonality effect in some stock markets are contagious. Specifically, seasonality effect in Malaysian stock market tends to be pre-determined by its occurrences in Singapore wad Thailand which in turn tend to be pre-determined by seasonality effect in Indonesia and the Philippines, respectively. From investment standpoint, the findings imply that investors in the follower markets could rely on the trend in the leader markets in the same region in order to improve their chance to exploit the seasonality effect.
