Abstract

The objective of the research is to determine the effect of fruit maturity and surface coating material on storagelife and quality of fruit. The research has carried out at Situbondo and Polytechnic of Jember, since May to September 2005. The design used in this research was Factorial Completely Randomized with three replications. The first factor was fruit maturity i.e.:  105,  110, and 115 days after full bloom (dafb). The second factor was the kind of surface coating materials i.e.: bee wax, palm oil, and glutinous rice starch. The research datas were variance analysed and the significance among treatment mean values were determined by Least Significant  Difference (LSD)  at the p 0.05 level. The result showed that maturity influenced: the carbon dioxide release at 7,  8, and 9 days,  the ethylene release at 9 days, weight loss, total soluble solids and sensory. There were interaction effects of maturity and coating material on total acid, reducing sugars, ascorbic acid, and storage life.

Abstract

This  research was aimed to study  the influence  of   kinds of cooling and packing  on the storage life of sweetcorn in order to obtain the simple postharvest  technology and easy to practice.  The research was done during the February - March of 2005 in the Research Laboratory of Agriculture Faculty, Muhammadiyah  University of Yogyakarta.  The reducing sugar analysis was done in the  Agriculture Technology Faculty of Gadjah Mada University. The laboratory  experiment  was arranged  ini 2 x 3 factorial  completely  randomized design with three replications.  The cooling first factor  was refrigerated in refrigerator to be compared  to the hydro-cooling.  Meanwhile,  the polypropilene and polyethylene  packaging were tested and compared to the unpackaged one. The flavor; reducing sugar, water content, percentage  of nonconsumable  part of sweetcorn,   fresh  weight  of ears,  and organoleptic properties  were observed. The result showed  that there was no significantly   interaction between cooling and packaging on  the  storage life  and  quality  of  sweet corn. The  cooling treatment was significantly influenced the starch and reducing sugar level  as well as the packaging treatment. Refrigeration   storage could significantly keep   the  level   of reducing  sugar  to remain higher than the hydro-cooling, this treatment  was also   decreased the starch  content, decreased the proportion  of unconsumable  part,  and maintained   the flavor. The  polyethylene    packaging significantly keep the level  of reducing  sugar to remain higher and relatively maintained the flavor   than  the polypropilene packaging or  unpackaged, but  decreased  the portion  of unconsumable  part.

Abstract

Abstract

Humic substances (humus), allophanes and humus complexes are the soil component which have highly reactivity and give great contribution   on genesis and lead to presence  of specific chemical and physical properties of Andisols.  The study on humus, allophanes and humus complexes was conducted on Andisols in Tawangmangu Karanganyar District of Central Java and Bedugul, Tabanan District of Bali to observe the distribution of humus,  allophanes and humus complexes along the profile and the factor affected  its distribution. The result  showed  that the content of humus  complexes tend to decrease with the dept in accordance to the content of humus, on the contrary of the content of allophanes.  So the humus complexes are abundance on the upper layer whereas the allophanes on the lower layers of the profiles. By means of the regression calculation indicated  that both of the pH (H2O) of the soil and the content of humus are controlled the formation of humus complexes and I or allophanes along the profiles.

Abstract

An research  on weed  control  with legumes  in sweet   corn intercropping   was conducted   in Kasihan, Bantul  District  of Yogyakarta  on February  to June 2003. The experiment  was aimed  to study  the role of legume  crop to control  weed growth  in  the intercropping    of sweet  corn. The experiment  was arranged in a single factor randomized  completely block  design (RCBD) with three blocks  as replication. The treatment  was the kind of legumes   i.e  groundnut, mungbean and soybean  planted  with sweetcorn  in the ratio of 1: 1, 1:2,  and 1:3 to be compared to  sole  crop of sweet  com  and legumes. The result  of this experiment showed that  legumes   existence reduced light  intensity   on soil surface. Presence of legumes as second crop with ratio up to 1:3 was significantly reduced  the weed growth  but not significantly influenced growth and yield of sweet corn. The higher the ratio of sweet  corn-legumes, the achievement of legumes yield  and land equivalent ratio were higher.

Abstract

A research to observe the population density of brown planthoppers (Nilaparvata lugens, Stal.) and their predator and parasitoid natural enemies has done on the rice field in Bantul regency of Yogyakarta. The research was conducted to observe the hoppers and its natural enemies on three local varieties and one superior brown planthoppers resistant variety of rice. The three local varieties of rice were Rejosari, Sri Kuning, and Sri Ayu, while the hopper resistant variety was IR 64. The observation were replicated three times. The result showed that population of brown planthoppers in the three local varieties of rice were higher than in the resistant IR 64 hybrid variety. The population of predators and parasitoid were relatively high in order to control the development of brown planthopper population. The predator Lycosa sp. and the parasitoids Anagrus sp.  were commonly found in the ecosystem.

Abstract

Kudzu, a kind  of  legume   cover  crops  (LCC),   plays  important   roles  in  soil and  water conservation. It is effective  for  inhibiting  erotion,  compaction  and leaching  of nutrients,  as well as to suppress weeds.  Plants growing with legume  ground covers usually show  better nutrition,   growth and yield. Recently,  this cover crops have been widely  used to prevent  the negative effects  and to improve  soil physical  and nutritional  characteristics. As a legume,  bacterial  inoculation   is to enhance  the infection and nodulation activity. A research  to observe  the role of indigenous  Rhizobium   on infection and nodulation  activity of kudzu was carried  out in September  till December 2004.  The research  was done in Regosol  volcanic  soil in Tlatar  Village  of Sawangan in Magelang district of Central  Java. A pot experiment   was arranged in 4x2 factorial    completely   randomized   design  which  was repeated   three times.   The  seedling   innoculation   with  root  nodules  endophytic   bacteria   was  to increase  nodulation  and to enhance  Kudzu  plant growth.   The seedlings  were inoculated  with  1, 2 and 3 ml/pot of grinded  root nodules  of wild plants  containing  endophytic  Rhizobium  sp.  The wild kudzu  plants were taken  from  coastal  sandy  land  of southern   Yogyakarta.   All treated seedlings were planted  in a sterilized  medium  to be compared  to the unsterilized  one in order to examine  the role of indigenous  bacterias. Observation  on bacterial infection activity, nodulation,  and plant growth were taken  at week  4, 6, 8, and  10. All the  datas  were  variance   analyzed   and the  treatments average  were  tested  with 5% level  of Duncan's multiple range test. The  results  showed  that  application   of 2 ml/pot  of innoculum significantly   increased  the infection  activity, nodulation  and plant growth. Sterilized  soil decreased  the infection  activity.   Since the innoculation  of endophytic Rhizobium  sp.  in unsterilized  soil significantly   increased the infection actifity,  nodulation  and plant growth,  so the indigenous  Rhizobium sp. in rhizhosfer  was needed to sinergisticaly  worked  well with inoculum  to increase  infection  activities   and root nodulation.
