The research aimed at finding out two questions: 1). what are rural English teachersâ beliefs about English in a rural school in facing the modern era?; and2). to what extent is English important in a rural school related to its global role viewed from teachersâ belief?. This paper utilized qualitative method in the form of case study. The respondents of the study were three English teachers from a rural school. The data were gathered through observation and interview then analyzed through the interactive model which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion: drawing/verification. The data analyzed reveals that: 1). English is crucially needed in rural school to develop human resources and to lead students to get the latest information; 2). English takes the global role in the rural school for helping students to learn internet and computer, to balance human resources and natural resources and as a foundation for making the connection with other people around the world in the wider scope. At the end of the paper, suggestions, and recommendation were also provided. Keywords: teachersâ beliefs, rural school, the importance of English

Assessment is an integral part of an English teachersâ instruction since it enables them to visualize the extent of successful instructions. However, teachers might not pay much attention to their role to help their students improve their learning. Even, many English language teachers seem to focus more on traditional formats of assessment such as multiple choice, true false, matching type, etc. and pay little attention to the washback effects of these kinds of assessment on studentsâ learning. This paper argues that a traditional assessment has at least two fundamental flaws. There is a little chance to identify the studentsâ factual skills as it only focuses on formal assessment. In addition, it only focuses on achievement of high scores under test conditions. This orientation can be misleading to the nature of language instruction itself. Therefore, this research article explores the washback effects of performance-based assessment as a current trend in English Language Teaching (ELT) in secondary-school studentsâ learning. To investigate this issue, in-depth interview, classroom observation, and document analysis were employed as the data collection methods. The merits of the research are to indicate how to arrange performance-based assessment and to identify its washback effects in the studentsâ learning. The results conclude that performance-based assessment encouraged and motivated students to learn more. Studentsâ perception in this type of assessment was positive and they strived to be more successful in their learning. Keywords: performance-based assessment, washback effects, student learning.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) mendeskripsikan latar sosial budaya pengarang Hanum Salsabiela dan Rangga Almahendra, (2) mendeskripsikan struktur dalam novel 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropakarya Hanum Salsabiela dan Rangga Almahendra, (3) mendeskripsikan nilai profetik dan pendidikan Islam humanistik dalam novel 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropakarya Hanum Salsabiela dan Rangga Almahendra (4) mendeskripsikan relevansi nilai profetik dan pendidikan Islam humanistik dengan relevansi dalam pembelajaran sastra Indonesia di SMA. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik pustaka, teknik simak dan teknik catat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan metode dialektik, dengan model semiotik dan pembacaan heuristik dan hermeneutik. Hasil penelitian ini adalah nilai profetik dan pendidikan Islam humanistik menghasilkan (1) pendidikan dan humanum, (b) pendidikan dan humanitas, (3) pendidikan dan humaniora, dan misi profetik nya(1) Amar maâruf (humanisasi), (2) Nahi munkar (liberasi) (3) Tuâminuna billah (transendensi). Relevansinya nilai profetik dan  pendidikan Islam humanistik dengan pembelajaran sastra Indonesia di SMA dapat dilihat dari standar kompetensi yang telah ditetapkan berupa sikap (attitude) sama dengan pendidikan dan humanitas, keterampilan (skill) sama dengan pendidikan dan humaniora, dan pengetahuan (knowledge) sama dengan pendidikan humanum. Kata Kunci: Nilai profetik, pendidikan Islam humanistik, novel 99 cahaya di langit Eropa, kajian semiotik, relevansi pembelajaran sastra Indonesia di SMA.

Sastra, terutama novel, tidak jauh dari bicara soal kehidupan bermasyarakat. Kehidupan bermasyarakat memiliki kaitan yang kuat terhadap kepribadian yang berhubungan dengan psikologi seseorang. Marni adalah salah satu tokoh utama dalam novel Entrok karya Okky Madasari. Kisah kehidupan Marni dalam novel tersebut sangatlah pelik sehingga sangat menarik untuk diteliti. Salah satu yang menarik untuk diteliti dari tokoh utama novel Entrok ini adalah kepribadian dari tokoh Marni.  Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa paragraf yang terdapat dalam novel Entrok Karya Okky Madasari dan sumber data novel dan buku acuan yang berkenaan dengan penelitian. Teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan 2 teknik yaitu teknik baca, dan teknik catat. Teknik validitas data dalam penelitian ini dengan triangulasi data. Teknik analisis data dala penelitian ini adalah dengan analisis isi.  Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui aspek kepribadian tokoh Marni dalam novel Entrok karya Okky Madasari berdasarkan teori kepribadian psikologi Sigund Freud. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah tokoh Marni tersebut memiliki aspek kepribadian yang mengacu pada teori Sigmund Freud yaitu id, ego, superego. Kata Kunci: Psikologi sastra, kepribadian, Sigmund Freud, novel, Entrok.Â

This paper gives a clear picture of the differences and competence of teenagers in Batam on producing gender written texts. This article also analyzed short coherent paragraphs by two different gender groups: male and female groups. Discourse analysis was employed to analyze the data â two different pictures. The data of this qualitative research comprise words, clauses and sentences classified into nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The researcher focused on the characteristics of both genders in expressing their ideas; self- confidence, doubt, language skills and logic. It is found that female students produced more words particularly nouns than those of males.Keywords: Characteristics, written, gender, comprise words, sentences

As one of the English skills, listening needs more than one instance in hearing because it is not only hearing but also understanding and interpreting the meaning of the conversation. Therefore, to make the students interested and easy to understand in listening, the lecturer applied blended learning. The primary focus of this research is to observe the implementation of blended learning in teaching listening. This is a qualitative research of which the subject is the students in one class. There are 28 students, 9 males and 19 females. The data were collected by interviewing the listening lecturer, observing the activities in the classroom and giving the questionnaire to the students. The result of the research showed that the implementation of blended learning in teaching listening at university was able to improve the studentsâ listening skill. In summary, this study demonstrated that the use of blended learning in teaching listening offered ways for lecturers to be more effective in the teaching and learning process and brought positive outcomes for the students. Keywords: Blended learning, listening, teachingÂ

Basa Semarangan memiliki kekayaan dan keunikan terutama dalam penjajaran fonem pada struktur internal leksikon dan kekuatan meaning dalam setiap leksikalnya. Dua hal ini lah yang banyak menduga bahwa Basa Semarangan adalah dialek yang berbeda. Penelitian ini mengkaji kekuatan tata letak fonem dalam struktur leksion unik yang terkait dengan perbedaan meaning, baik yang terkait dengan perluasan dan penyempitan arti. Lokasi penelitian di Kota Semarang, terfokus pada dua area di sepanjang Sungai Banjirkanal, yakni Mrican dan Barito. Ancangan penelitian linguistic structural terfokus pada kajian fonologi. Metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara terstruktur dan mendalam. Data dianalisis menggunakan metode agih dengan piranti teknik pemetaan, liniaritas   dan harmonisasi. Hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa kekuatan tata letak fonem dalam Basa Semarangan memiliki kekuatan dalam membangun arti baru, sehingga leksikon yang muncul menjadi varian-varian leksikon dan leksikon baru. Leksikon baru dapat dikategorikan sebagai leksikon unik yang memiliki sosiokultural dan daya emotif. Kata Kunci: fonem, unik, Basa Semarangan, leksikon.

Salah satu fenomena sosial di kalangan remaja saat ini ialah terbentuknya geng-geng sekolah. Di Yogyakarta, nama-nama geng sekolah, baik di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) maupun Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) sederajat, dinilai cukup unik dan menarik. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah mengkaji nama-nama geng sekolah di Yogyakarta dalam kajian linguistik antropologi (anthropological  linguistics).  Teknik  pengumpulan  data  dalam  penelitian ini menggunakan peneliti sebagai instrumen utama penelitian. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah nama-nama geng sekolah di Yogyakarta yang disimak dan dicatat oleh peneliti. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah teknik kajian isi (content analysis) secara objektif dan sistematis. Adapun hasil penelitian ini ialah adanya fenomena kebahasaan yang meliputi (1) penggunaan akronim, (2) resistansi bahasa, (3) pemakaian bahasa Jawa, (4) pemakaian bahasa Inggris, dan (5) pemakaian istilah militer di balik nama- nama geng sekolah di Yogyakarta.Kata Kunci: nama geng sekolah, linguistik antropologi, fenomena kebahasaan
