Abstract

This study compared the oil yield and identified the quality of cassiavera with plants ages 7 years, 18 years, and random (broken) one. Parameters measured included yield, physicochemical properties, and chemical composition. Based on the results, the oil yield was 1%, 0.9%, and 0.7% at ages 8 and 7 years of upper and lower stem parts, as well as for the broken form. This indicates that the longer plant age correlates with a higher yield. The yield at 7 and 18 years is not much different, hence the harvest can be performed at the age of 7 years considering a shorter waiting period. The physicochemical test of oil solubility in 70% ethanol showed a ratio of 1:1 and a clear appearance according to the maximum requirements of INS (Indonesian National Standard) 06-3734:2006, namely 1:3 clear. Meanwhile, the refractive index (RI) test indicated 1.56 as the best value for cassiavera scion at the age of 7 years in line with INS 06-3734:2006 conditions of 1.559 - 1.595. The chemical composition test for the oil as a whole complied with the minimum standard of INS 06-3734:2006, namely 50% cinnamaldehyde.

Abstract

Siamese orange (Citrus nobilis) is a local citrus that grows in Mount Omeh, Lima Puluh Kota Regency. The quality is improved through thinning which is the process of removing some of the young fruit. Therefore, this research aimed to use young oranges obtained from thinning fruit in the manufacture of essential oils to reduce waste from citrus plants. Orange peel is converted into essential oil through distillation for 6 hours at 90-1000 C. The results showed that the product obtained had a yield of 0.9% (V/V), pale yellow color, volatility with a specific gravity of 0.84%, refractive index of 1.46, 0.67 acid number, solubility in ethanol 1:19 clear, ester number 27, and 0.02 mg/kg Fe content. The socialization of the use of essential oil and hydrosol in soap making to citrus farmers and industrial craftsmen around the Lima Puluh Kota Regency was also performed. The outcome indicate a positive response from the participants and the local government, thereby increasing the commercial value of oranges.

Abstract

Abstract

Beverages and other commodities packaged in bottles for small and medium industries (SMEs) generally require a relatively long production time. This process is significantly dependent on the workers' skills to achieve higher production costs and low efficiency. Therefore, this research designed an automated water-filling device for improving and monitoring SMEs productivity in real-time. The system comprises four types of sensors, namely ultrasonic, temperature, TDS (total dissolved solids), and proximity. The ultrasonic and temperature sensors measure the water level and temperature in the holding tank. The TDS sensor measures the value of substances or particles dissolved in the water, while the proximity sensor detects and counts the number of bottles. Sensor readings are displayed on the LCD (liquid crystal display) and can be monitored via a smartphone using the Blynk application. In conclusion, the existing automation system accompanied by an IoT-based monitoring system can help SMEs to check the quality and efficiency of production in real-time.
