Abstract

Heat treatment is one of the important factors in refining castor oil since it was able to coagulate amino acid so that thefat could be easily extracted. The heat treatment conducted were roasting, steaming, and drying. It was conducted before pressing of castor seed. Meanwhile refining castor oil consist of cleaning, grading, drying, pressing, deguming, sentrifusing mixing, bleaching and filter screening (vacuum), washing and quality testing. Pressing of castor kernel was conducted with 50 tons hydrolics press and screw press. Refined castor oil treatment with oven temperature 60 degree celcius for 1 hour showed the higest yield from the other treatment and also the clearer colour. Various concentration and combinationof oxidator was used to produce modified castor oil from refined castor oil. Oxidator used were H2O2 (3% and 5%), KMnO4 (3% and 5%). The best result oxidized castor oil was processed from refined castor oil and oxidator H2O2 3% with 1:5 comparison of volume.

Abstract

The research of making ceiling from mixture of main component (fly ash,and bottom ash)with cement and short of coir fibre have been conducted. The treatment consist of the amount of component, cement and short of coir and fibre size. The caracteristic of ceiling to be analyzed as according to national standar of Indonesia SNI No.0233-1989 consist of: external profile, specific gravity, size measure, compactness, strong flex, ability nailed, wight fill, and water absorbtion. The results show that ceiling produced has difference between ceiling from the fly ash and bottom ash. From the both of main component seen that surface of ceiling are same burst and streng flex still lower. The strong flex from fly ash between 18,4-24,5 kg/cm3,specific gravity between 1,47-1,65 g/cm3 and water absorbtion between 15,95-19,7%, while from bottom ash the strong flex between 11,2-23,2 kg/cm3, specific gravity between 1,52-1,63 g/cm3 and water absorbtion between 16,25-20,58%. The analysis of tehno-economic indicate that cost of goods manufactured equal to Rp780,-/ceiling. At the price of selling Rp1.300,-/ceiling,hence return of investment during 2,5 year with the totally of invesment equal to Rp 19.500.000.

Abstract

Deodorizing and reaction time of degumming are some of the most important factors that can affect the quality refined vegetable oils or its derivatives. The results of unit operations in doedorizing and degumming give low viability of product especially produced by vegetable oils smallholder industry in Indonesia. To increase quality of those and income producer there is a need to enhance process by introducing appropriate equipments. This study was devoted in designing and testing centrifuge for degumming of crude vegetable oils (Palm kernel oil) and vacuum deodorizer using jet pump for refining oils. The maximum capacity of sentifuge constructed is 12 liters and it was equipped with four container and 1 horse power of induction motor. The performance test of centrifuge showed reaction time for degumming was two hours with maximum impurities or gums (7%). This reaction time is shorter than those of conventional degumming process using settling tank e.g all night reaction time. Deodorizer reactor has capacity of 40 liters oil processed, and it is generated with 1,1 hp of induction motor. steam from small boiler unit was introduced to the doedorized tank to reduces impurities and free fatty acid (FFA). The reactor was equipped with metal heater element of 5000 watt which immersed in silicon oil as heating medium and it was covered by insulator. The reaction temperature of deodorizing process was 160 degree celcius. Palm kernel oil quality processed by vacuum deodorizer tested e.g. free fatty acid (FFA) was 0,03%, peroxide number was 3,03 meq/kg, moisture content was 0,94%,anisidin number was 3,97, and color were yellow and red (0,4 and 7). It means that those results of refined palm kernel oil caracteristics meet the standard required.

Abstract

Cocodust is one of the waste of coconut industry which consist of some minerals and it has bulky volume, it means that cocodust has much air space whice is good for medium of plantation. Cocodust has been exported to Europe for plantation medium. Unfortunetly that cocodust consist of highly certai mineral which do not need by plant therefore it should be reduce their component as their standard for plantation medium. The experiment of cocodust was carried out by rinsing of cocodust in water to reduce their mineral such as sodium(Na) and dryed it with artificial dryer and sun drying. The result of treated cocodust mixed with different propotion of soil and used to grow capsicum plant. The effect of the use of cocodust in the growing of capsicum plant was observed their height. The result showed that rinsing of cocodust can reduce sodium content about 90%, drying by using rotary dryer can reduce drying time and the best treatment for planting was propotion beetween cocodust and soil was 1:1.

Abstract

The Indonesia market for bottled drinking water currently shows a very high rate of growth. Per capita consumption of packaged drinking water is about 32 liters per year and tend to be risen. The number of bottled drinking water registered in Indonesia are about 350 industries which produced as much 5 billions liters per year. Most of all drinking water production in Indonesia are produced by bottled drinking water industry. However, there are evidence, problem and fact that some of bottled drinking water was contained and it has not met the quality and safety standard. Since the nethods of contamination protection has been issued, the problem in bottled drinking water service establishment is to enforce which must include not only proper equipments nad installations but also training of the personel. The HACCP concept for preparation drinking water of bottled drinking water service has to be socialized with the simple language. Goevernment and inspection authorities should encourage the ready to drinking water industry managerial to apply the safety control and HACCP procedures to ensure safe drinking water production.

Abstract

Study on Extraction of Theobromine from Cacao seed has been conducted. The study is aimed at evaluating the extraction of theobromine effectiveness using Pavia Method and the modification of Pavia Method. The modification of Pavia Method was based on variation of MgO level and variation of organic solvent used. The variation of MgO level were 6 gr, 3 gr, and 0 gr, and the variation of organic solvent used were etanol, chloroform, and etyl acetate. The result of study showed that there was no significance influence of variation of MgO level on the weight and concentration of theobromine extracted. While the variation of organic solvent used showed significance influence to the weight and concentration of theobromine extracted. The best extraction result was obtained when using ethanol when using ethanol as an organic solvent.
