As an international, multi-disciplinary, peer-refereed journal, the scope of this journal is in learning and instruction area which provides a platform for the publication of the most advanced scientific researches in the areas of learning, development, instruction and teaching at English Education. The journal welcomes original empirical investigation. The papers may represent a variety of theoretical perspectives and different methodological approaches. <![CDATA[The purposes of this study are to anlyze the translation procedure and the way of the translator in translating the subtitle of Boychoir movie. The scope of this study is focused on the type of translation procedures in translating the subtitle movie and also analyze the way of the translator in translating the subtitle on Newmark’s (1988:81) translation procedures which the procedures consist of 18 types. The methodology of this study was qualitative research. The researcher analyzed the data descriptively and presented the analysis result in the explanation form and supported by data presented in the form of table. In analyzing the data the procedures were as follows: juxtaposing both of English and Indonesian version, Identyfying, analyzing and classifying, and calculating the total numbers. The translation procedures found in the subtitle of the movie were literal translation, transference, naturalisation, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, synonymy, transpositions, modulation, reduction and expansion, couplets.]]>

<![CDATA[Lyrics in song are intended to send a message to the audience ormusic lovers. Composers use figurative language as the media toconvey their message. One of the figurative languages that is mostlyused in song’s lyrics is Metaphor. This study was intended toinvestigate the types of metaphor used in One Direction Album. Theobjective of this study to identify the types of metaphor found in thesong lyrics and to analyze metaphor meaning in One Direction song.This study adopted a descriptive qualitative research design. Threesongs by One Direction had been chosen as the data of this study;Story of My Life, Steal My Girl and Drag Me Down. The data wereanalyzed its metaphor by using Lakoff and Johnson theory, while ininvestigating the meaning, Chaer’s theory of contextual meaningwas used. The result of the study showed that based on the threetypes of metaphor, structural metaphor becomes the most frequentlyused in the song lyrics, meanwhile 2 of 3 songs used all of the threetypes of metaphor; Orientation, Structural and OntologicalMetaphor. In answering the second research question about themeaning of each metaphor, each lyric has been analyzed throughcontent analysis to know the true meaning of what the song writerwant to express in his/her lyrics and each lyric has differentcontextual meaning which is elaborated further in this study.1Keywords: Metaphor, Meaning, One Direction’s Album]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims at investigating the effect of Montessori Method on student’s vocabulary achievement at seventh grade in SMPS Kartika Kendari. The design of the research was quasi-experimental that consists of experimental class and control class. The sample was second semester students class VII.B as experiment class and class VII.C as control class. Both class consisted of 28 students. It was vocabulary test that consisted of 21 numbers of questions and used SPSS 16 to analyze the data. The result shows that there is a significant effect of using Montessori Method on student’s vocabulary achievement. It is proven by descriptive analysis in which student’s mean score of experimental class was 38.20 in pre-test and 76.00 in post-test, meanwhile students’ mean score of control class was 36.20 for pre-test and 68.40 for post-test. Furthermore, The Result of hypothesis testing show that the value of sig (2-tailed) was 0,009 which smaller than 0.05, means that HO is rejected and H1 accepted. Therefore, it can be inferred that there is a significant effect using Montessori Method on student’s vocabulary achievement. Hence, teaching and learning vocabulary through Montessori Method is one of effective ways in improving student’s vocabulary achievement]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to find out whether there is a significant effectof chain drill technique on the first year of SMP Negeri 3 Raha. Theresearch question formulated “is there any significant effect ofchain drill technique on students’ speaking achievement at SMPNegeri 3 Raha?â€. The design of study was pre-experimentalresearch design that consisted of one group pre-test and post-test.The population of this study was all students on the first year ofSMP Negeri 3 Raha who were registered in academic year2017/2018. The sample of this study was one class namely VII3which consisted of 22 students. The instrument of this study wasoral test in dialogue based on the cue card about how to greet andrespond. The research used Paired Sample T- test to analyze theresult of the study of the effect of chain drill technique on students’speaking achievement after analyzing the normality of the data inthe experimental class. The result shows that students’ speakingability in the post test is 2.806 higher than 1.647 is the post test.The hypothesis testing is found that the level of significant is 0.00,since the level of significance value is less than 0.05, i.e.0.00<0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and H1 is accepted.It means that the use of chain drill technique shows a significantdifference on students’ speaking achievement on the first year ofSMP Negeri 3 Raha based on the result of the post-test.Keywords: Speaking, Teaching Speaking, Chain Drill Technique]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims at determining students’ competence in Micro-Teaching course at English Department. The researcher exclusively focused on analyzing the seven skills they are: opening and closing the lesson, explaining skill, questioning skill, reinforcement, providing variation, classroom management and guiding small group discussion. The subject of the study was students at English Department who were taking Micro-Teaching course. The totals of the subject were 30 students. The researcher employed descriptive qualitative design with observation, video and assessment rubric. The result show differently in which students’ mastery level in opening and closing the lesson is good with the average score 72%, explaining skill is very good with the percentage of average score 81%, questioning skill is very bad with the percentage of average score 59%, reinforcement is very good with the percentage of average score 88%, providing variation is very bad with the percentage of average score 49%, classroom management is bad with the percentage of average score 55%, and the last guiding small group discussion is very bad with the percentage of average score 26%. Besides, it also portrayed that the most mastered skills among all skill is reinforcement and skill the most lack is guiding small group discussion.]]>

<![CDATA[This study was aimed at finding out whether there is a significanteffect of Total Physical Response (TPR) method on students’speaking achievement. The research question addressed was “isthere any significant effect of Total Physical Response (TPR) methodon students’ speaking achievement?†The design of study was quasiexperimental design by using two classes, namely experimentalclass and control class. This study involved the ninth gradestudents of SMPN 1 Kabawo who were registered in the academicyear 2017/2018. The instrument of the study was oral test wherethe students performed in front of the class orally about how tomake a glass of ice lemon in 3 minutes. The study usedindependent sample t- test to analyze the data. The result showedthat the students’ speaking score in experimental class (3.12) washigher than students’ speaking score in control class (2.23). Theresult of hypothesis testing revealed that the level of significant was0.00. <![CDATA[This thesis is about the analysis of speech acts found in the talk show “Hitam Putih†on Trans 7 (Episode 18th December 2017). The research question of this thesis were (1) What kinds of the illocutionary acts used in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih†talk show? And (2) How perlocutionary acts implied in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih†talk show?. The objectives of this research were to identifying and analyze the types of the illocutionary acts and the perlocutionary acts implied in host and main guest stars utterance in “Hitam Putih†talk show.This research used a qualitative method to describe and analyze the utterances. The technique of data collection were (1) Download the video of talk show Hitam Putih from YouTube. (2) Transcribe the conversation by listen to the video in several times. (3) Reads and observes dialog from the script. (4) Classified the types of illocutionary acts which finding in conversation. The technique of data analysis were (1) The researcher identified the illocutionary act and perlocutionary act from the host and main guest stars utterance in Hitam Putih talk show. (2) Described and analized the utterances which include illocutionary and perlocutionary acts by using pragmatic approach. (3) Concluding the data analysis.The result of this thesis show that assertive illocutionary acts is the dominant types of speech act. There are 29 assertive of illocutionary acts, 14 directive of illocutionary acts, 15 expressive of illocutionary acts, 1 commissive of illocutionary acts. Perlocutionary acts which occurs between the speakers and the listener in the form of give statements, give questions, body language, expressions and following the speaker’s directions.]]>

<![CDATA[This research is aimed at investigating whether or not there was a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on students’ writing competence at MAN 1 Konawe Selatan in writing recount text. The design of this research was pre-experimental design which involved only one class (class X MIA 1) as sample of this research. The total sample was 24 students which selected by using purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a written test which focused on three aspects of writing namely organization, language use and mechanics. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test in order to know students’ writing competence before and after treatment of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group had been applying. The researcher used the paired sample t-test in SPSS 16 Windows Software to analyze the result of this research. The finding shows that there is a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on students’ writing competence. It is proven by the result of descriptive analysis where the mean score of pre-test was 51.66 and mean score of post-test was 67.29. Furthermore, the result of hypothesis testing showed that the value of Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than alpha value 0.05, means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Peer Feedback through Facebook Group on upgrading students’ writing competence in recount text at MAN 1 Konawe Selatan. Hence, teaching and learning writing use Peer Feedback through Facebook Group can be one of effective methods on upgrading students’ writing competence.]]>

<![CDATA[This research was accomplished to find out whether Bahasa Inggris textbook for Grade X fulfilled each criterion of textbook evaluation criteria based on Jahangard’s theory. The researcher used the qualitative analysis design. The data source was collected from Bahasa Inggris textbook for Grade X published by Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan, Balitbang, Kemendikbud. The instrument of this study was a table of textbook evaluation criteria. The researcher collected the data by using checklist to evaluate the textbook and analyze the data shown by the checklist and make some interpretations, and finally describing the results from the assessment table. The result confirmed that only five of fourteen sub-criteria which did not be fulfilled, they are vocabulary section consists of list of words and their definition, each chapter should consist of four skills, there is a grammar presentation in each chapter and the words are correctly spelled. While the rest nine of sub-criteria were fulfilled. It was recommended to the teacher to be more critical and could cover the weaknesses of the textbook by various teaching style or find another reference outside the textbook. <![CDATA[Speech function that used in delivering instructional process is important because a major part of class time in learning process is taken up by teachers. Teachers should use speech function appropriate with the classroom context. This study applied speech function theory to analyse functional speech of teacher‟s utterances. This study investigated the speech function used by English teachers in language instruction. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of speech function and the accuracy of speech functions used by English teachers at SMAN 5 Kendari. This study employed a qualitative research design. The techniques of data collection were documentation and observation. To analyse the data, the researcher used descriptive analysis.
