Abstract

The main objective of this study was to analysis the quality of the test used involving the content validity, reliability, level of difficulty, and discrimination power. It Studied the quality of the English test, Especially English final test used for the first semester students’ at the first, second, and the third grade of SMAN 1 Amonggedo in academic year of 2017/2018. The source of the data in this study was the student’s answer sheet of first, second, and third grade of SMAN 1 Amonggedo. The total answer sheets of the students were 178.  In analyzing the data, the researcher used a formula to analyzed content validity and also used SPSS 16 program to measure the reliability, level of difficulty, and discrimination power. The result of the content validity analysis of the test in the three levels with two classes in each level showed that all of tests were fulfill the criteria of a good test because its representative from the syllabus. Second, the finding of reliability analysis showed that almost all items of test were valid. Indeed all of test has very high reliability because the number value of reliability 0, 70 < r11  ≤ 1. The level of difficulty analysis showed that 72, 5 % in the level of medium and only 27, 5% in the level of easy. Discrimination power analysis of the test had a good discrimination, with the number of percentage 46%. It also showed that 8,3% in  poor discrimination, 13,3% in the level of sufficient, 26,6% had very good or excellent discrimination, but there was also 5,8% item skipped.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the types of conjunctions and the accurately use of conjunction in students’ writing. This research was conducted in SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The instrument of this research was students’ writing that focused on recount text. This research employed descriptive qualitative design. The population of this research was the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno. The sample of this research is the second-grade students of SMA N 1 Tongkuno consist of 20 students. The researcher collected the data by asking the students to write their personal recount. The technique of data analysis in this study was descriptive analysis, while to analyze the accuracy of conjunction the researcher used criteria of correctness in cohesion that consist of the use of conjunction on students’ writing. The result shows that all of types of conjunction exist in students writing, additive conjunction is the most frequently conjunction used in students’ writing, followed by temporal conjunction, then causal conjunction, and the last adversative conjunction. The accuracy of conjunction used by students on their writing contribute highly because mostly the second-grade students of SMAN 1 Tongkuno use conjunction accurately.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out a significant correlation between students' learning interest and their English achievement in SMAN 10 Kendari. The method used in conducting this research is correlation study. The results of the research show that there is significant correlation between students’ learning interest and their English achievement. It can be seen by the results of analysis using Correlation Product Moment with help program SPSS Version 16, it showed a significance value rxy is 0.382; df is 100 if it is compared with the r table at the degree of significance 5% (0.195) and 1% (0.254), the correlation between students’ learning interest and their English achievement is significant (rxy: rtable= 0.382 > 0.195; rxy: rtable = 0.382 > 0.254) it means that H0 rejected and H1 accepted. Thus it can be concluded that there was significant correlation between students’ learning interest and their English achievement at SMAN 10 Kendari in academic year 2016/2017.

Abstract

This study was intended to investigate the effect of Cornell note taking method on the 11th grade students’ grammar learning at MAN 1 Kendari. The research question of thisstudy was “Is there any significant effect of Cornell note taking method instruction on students’ grammar learning at class XI of MAN 1 Kendari?”. The scope of the study revolved around the students in 11th grade of MAN 1 Kendari and Grammar courses.The samples of this study were from class XI IPS 2 as control class and XI IPS 3 as experimental class; there are 20 students from each class. This study was a quantitative study that employed two-group) posttest-only design with Cornell note taking method as independent variable and students’ grammar learning as dependent variable.The datawas collected through a grammar test with 35 items of questions. The data of this study was analyzed by usingSPSS 16.0. The result showed that there was 2.80200 score difference between both classes with control class obtained 3.92 and experimental class achieved 6.72. The data obtained via Independent Sample T-test presented the p value was.000. Thus, because the p value indicated that Sig. < α (0.05), it showed that H0was rejected and H1was accepted. Moreover, the calculated effect size, r = 0.6, was categorized as large. Therefore, it could be concluded that Cornell note taking method had worked well and carried a large effect on improving students’ grammar learning at class XI IPS 3 of MAN 1 Kendari.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of keeping vocabulary notebooks on students’ vocabulary achievement at the second grade in SMPN 2 Raha. The purpose of this study is to find out a significant effect after keeping vocabulary notebook on students’ vocabulary achievement. This study applied quantitative research design. This study used vocabulary notebook as a treatment in learning process for the students. The subject of this study was second grades students of SMPN 2 Raha who were registered in academy year 2017-2018. The technique of taking sample of study was purposive sampling. The sample of this study was class VIII2 as an experimental class and class VIII1 as a control class. The instrument of this study was vocabulary test consist of 30 numbers, the result showed that there was not a significant effect of  keeping vocabulary notebooks on students’ vocabulary . It was not proved with the improvement of students were the students more active in the classroom rather than the teacher. Students can discover the new words by themselves on the learning activities. the result of students’ vocabulary test was supported with the mean score in post-test of experimental class is higher than the mean score in the post-test of control class. The mean score for the post-test in experimental class was 82.15 and the mean score for post-test in control class was 79.36. but  the data was not distributed normally, the analysis of the data was used the non parametric analysis and the result of Mann Whitney non parametric analysis, the value of Sig 2-tailed = 0.57 with α 0.05. it means that H0 is accepted. It is because the value of Asymp sig 2-tailed is above the alpha (α) value. This result showed that there was not a significant effect of using vocabulary notebooks on students’ vocabularu achievement at the second grades in SMP Negeri 2 Raha.

Abstract

Motivation is the reason of someone's behaviour. It explains peoples' needs, action, and desires. Motivation can also be defined as a   peoples' reason to change his/her behaviour. In language classes, lecturers have been trying a lot of things to motivate their student in a class. There have been the number of studies in the educational field to prove that lecturer or teacher has an important role in student’s motivation. In that matter, this study aimed to identify motivating lecturer’s behaviour in language class according to students. Participant of the study included 90 students which consist of 40 students for pilot study and 50 students as the main study, and those students were all from the English Study Program at Halu Oleo University. The data were collected using the questionnaire that administrated to these participants, and 10 students were also interviewed to get in-depth information on lecturer motivational behaviour. The qualitative data were analysed through descriptive statistic. The result presented some significant insight on lecturer's motivational behaviour that would serve lecturers as a guide for classroom implications.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the data of students’ vocabulary test score, data of each questionnaire, and to find out the correlation between each media (book, hand phone, and computer/laptop) and students’ vocabulary mastery. Used Correlational study as the design of study with cluster random sampling in taking sample technique where the population were 5 classes (177 students) and the sample was class XI.IA 1 (36 students). Instrument of this study were vocabulary test and questionnaire, vocabulary test consisted of 90 item test in form of multiple choice, matching, identification, translation, and sentence completion while the questionnaire divided into three kind that were 18 statements for book, 15 statements for hand phone, and for 14 statements computer/laptop. Technique data analysis used SPSS version 16 by beginning validity and reliability test, normality test, and Correlation test. Result of this study showed that between book and students’ vocabulary mastery there was very high correlation but between hand phone and students’ vocabulary mastery there was very low correlation on the other hand, there was a low correlation between computer/laptop and students’ vocabulary mastery.In brief, there are positive significant correlation between book, between hand phone as medium with students’ vocabulary mastery, and computer/laptop as media with students’ vocabulary mastery. The use of media are important to variate learning process especially for new medium but the teacher or students have to use media has high correlation to improve students’ vocabulary mastery intensely.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari. This study applied a Pre-experimental research design with one group pretest and posttest. The population of this research was the eleventh- grade students of senior high school in the academic year 2018 /2019. The sample of this research was all eleventh-grade students of MAN I Kendari which consists of 30 students. The Technique of sampling used by the researcher was total sampling. The result showed there was a significant effect of using folktales on students’ listening achievement. It was proven based on descriptive analysis, the mean score of pretest was 48.4 and the posttest means score was 75.2. Moreover, the result of hypothesis testing showed that the mean value of pretest and posttest was 26.7 and the standard deviation was 20.7, while the standard error means was 3.78. The sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 which smaller than (<0.05), it can be concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted which means there was an effect of using Folktales in teaching Listening at Eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kendari.

Abstract

The study aims at investigating the correlation between students’ emotional intelligence and their academic achievement at the eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Lawa. The objective of the study was to answer the following research questions: what is the correlation between students’ emotional intelligence and their academic achievement in English language at SMAN 1 Lawa?. The study was correlation research study, which employed quantitative research methods. The data were collected from 135 participants who are from SMA N 1 Lawa class XI IPA and IPS. The data collection was carried out by using an emotional intelligence questionnaire and English achievement students from report card. Researcher used simple random sampling technique in taking the sample. The data of the study was analyzed through Spearman correlation analysis of SPSS 16. The result showed that the coefficient correlation that obtained from the computation was 0.352 and categorized as moderate correlation. The result showed that there was a positive correlation between students’ emotional intelligence and their academic achievement in English language. The conclusion of this study was drawn through the result of computation which showed that the value of coefficient of correlation (r) between two variables, that was emotional intelligence as the variable X and academic achievement as the variable Y, was as moderate as that of the Spearman correlation table with 0.05 level significant. Further, the data showed that there was a moderate correlation. Therefore, it showed that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected.

Abstract

This study aimed at knowing the types of students’ misbehavior mostly happened in the learning process and strategy that teacher used in dealing with the students’ misbehavior at the first and second grade in SMPN 1 Lasalepa. The researcher employed descriptive as the design of the study where observation was used to collect the data. The results of the study showed that the misbehavior of students mostly happened in the class were: talking during the class, lack of concentration, joking, laziness, daydreaming, disobedience and running about the class. Then, teachers’ strategies used in dealing with the students’ misbehavior were: asking the students calmly but strictly to stop the students’ behavior problems, ignoring the students’ misbehavior and not paying attention to it, walking toward the student and getting physically close to them, and giving students questions in the classroom. As the result, it is necessary to be known due to problems always come in the class and teachers need to know the kinds of the problem and need to prepare the appropriate strategies to handle the problems properly in order to not disturb the learning process.
