Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate fresh and dry matter production, botanical composition, and carrying capacity of natural pasture during the rainy season in Oemasi Village, Nekamese District, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The fresh and dry matter production was evaluated using the Halls method. The botanical composition was analyzed using the dry weight rank method, and the carrying capacity was calculated using the Voisin formula. The data obtained were descriptively analyzed. The results showed that the average production of fresh and dried materials was respectively 1.64 tons/ha and 0.90 tons/ha. The botanical composition comprises 61.70% grass, 9.68% legumes, and 28.62% weeds. The carrying capacity of natural pasture is 0.84 UT/ha. The findings of the present study suggest that the carrying could be increased by introducing the creeping of legume vines and minimizing non-palatable weed species. Keywords: Botanical composition, Carrying Capacity, Fresh and dry production.

Abstract

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a major component of cell membranes with gram negative bacteria including Brucella. The stain of B.abortus, B.melitensis, and B.suiscan be rough or smooth strains and express rough LPS (R-LPS)) or smooth LPS (S-LPS) as the main surface antigen; while, B .ovis and B.canis are two natural rough species that express R-LPS as the main antigen. R-LPS in B.abortus RB51 which is a stable R-LPS mutated from 2308 virulent S strains, while S-LPS is produced from B.abortus S1119-3 or S99 which is extracted by heating and then cooled. Both types of LPS can stimulate the humoral and innate immunity host immunity response. Those types are used as antigens in the diagnostic device and as immunogens of vaccines.  Keyword; LPS bakteri, Brucella, Medik Veteriner

Abstract

The province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has several local maize varieties that are proven to be more resistant to pest than hybrid varieties. Unfortunately, the local varieties have very low growth and development that in turn, hinder its productivity. Research on the effect of kusum tree (Schleichera oleosa) derived liquid smoke on the germination and growth of white local maize variety has been conducted. Treatments used different concentration as follows: P0: 0% of liquid smoke (control), P1: 10%, P2: 20%, P3: 30% and P4: 40%. Results showed no significant effect on germination percentage (GT) and mean germination time (MGT). However, it has significant effect on the number of leaves/sprout where the P1 andP2 treatment gave the best result. This could serve as an alternative method for farmers in cultivating their maize crops for a better productivity yield, especially for use as livestock feed.  Keywords: White maize, Liquid smoke, Kusum tree, Germination, Timor local variety.

Abstract

African swine fever (ASF) is a hemorrhagic infectious disease in pigs caused by a DNA virus from the Asfarviridae family of the genus Asfivirus. An effective vaccine against ASF has not yet been found. This study aims to identify factors that play a role as a source of transmission of ASF disease in pig farms in Kupang City and Regency. Analyze the data in a description with interviews with 60 pig breeders. Factors that are the source of transmission of the ASF virus include the origin of pig livestock from traditional farms (7,7%) and animal markets (6,7%), feed sources are garbage feed (61,7%), non-routine health checks (90%), dead pigs their carcasses are thrown into landfills (20%), waste is disposed of in sewers (33,3%). Another factor that plays a role is that breeders do not know Ornithodoros sp. as a carrier vector of the ASF virus as well as if the pig is sick the farmer immediately sells his pig (60 %). Key Word: ASF, Transmission, Kupang City and Regancy

Abstract

Arbila beans (Phaseolus lunatus L.) are one of the wild beans found on Timor Island. Local people utilize the beans even though they contain cyanide acid toxic. To underpin the nutritive as well as the toxic content of the bean, a study has been conducted using four types of the bean found in Timor i.e. red bean, black bean, white bean, and brown bean.  The red bean has a middle size and looks a bit swollen; the black bean is a lengthy middle size; the white bean is also lengthy but looks flat; while the brown bean is a bit broad and enlarged. All bean types contain protein of about 17%, calcium 39-42.5 mg per 100 g; while the highest lipid content (10.86%) was found in the brown beans. Cyanide acid content was found very high in the black bean (244.71 ppm), on the contrary, its lowest content was found in the white bean (34.30 ppm).   Keywords:  Arbila bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.), nutritive value, cyanide acid.

Abstract

Indonesia Biodiversity Wealth is the savanna ecosystem of Menipo Island Nature Tourism Park (TWA). The Savanna type on Menipo Island has similarities with savanna in Africa which includes tropical savanna. The Savanna ecosystem on Menipo Island has an important role in supporting the food needs of herbivorous animals such as deer (Cervus timorensis). Therefore, reduction and decrease in Savanna quality and quantity will reduce herbivore population. Stresses on savanna ecosystems have a major impact on balance and entire ecosystem preservation. There are seven vegetation types that make up savanna on Menipo Island, with three seedling level types, three sapling types, six pole types, and three tree types. The method used is observation, collecting data, and interview. The research result is the vegetation types of vegetation savanna forest in the Menipo island natural tourism park are 7 types with the constituent levels for seedlings consisting of 3 types, 3 types of piles, 6 types of pile levels, and 3 types of tree levels. Key Words:  Method, Seedlings, Savanna, Saplings, Trees, Poles

Abstract

The potential of land and pastures is very abundant, especially in South Central Timor Regency. However, the maintenance system is still conducted using extensive-traditional (semi-intensive) methods, that is, grazing is carried out in natural pasture where the cattle are left free to graze and after that the cattle are put back in cages. Therefore, farmers must provide forage for their livestock. The purpose of this study was to analyze the potential use of forage for ruminants in South Central Timor Regency. Primary data had been obtained through interviews using questionnaires and direct observations. Respondents in this study were 94 breeders located in the districts of North Mollo, Noebeba and South Amanuban. Results of the study showed that the types of forage fodder in South Central Timor Regency consisted of natural grass, superior grass, tree legumes and rumbah. In addition, farmers also used agricultural crop wastes as animal feed. Key Words:  Forages, Pasture, South Central Timor Regency.
