Abstract

This paper demonstrates that polluters not only refer to a company or individual but also includes government and society. In economic perspective, the impacts of economic activities on environment are considered externalities (external costs). In order to develop an environmentally friendly economic system, every economic activity needs to internalize the external costs as one of the components of production costs. In this regard, environmental economics plays an important role in valuing such externalities.Various policy instruments are also discussed in this paper in order to support sustainable environmental development. It is concluded that with no market distortion, market-based mechanism instrument is considered effective in protecting environment. If market distortion exists, however, regulation-based instrument is considered more effective.

Abstract

Role of women in development has been well-known. Women roles in rural area can be identified from their involvement in rural industries either agricultural home industries or other small-scale industries processing material taken from natural resources. One of such natural resource materials is sea water to be further processed as salts. Most of women in Medang Hamlet, Village of Sekotong Barat, Nusa Tenggara Barat Province work as salt makers. Instead of drying salty water by using sunshine, the salt farmers in Medang Hamlet use wood in heating the salt water. The study finds that the income earned from this activity is considerably low. Since there is no other source of income alternative for the women in this hamlet, making salt becomes the only job that can be done. The consequence is that the villagers in this area are still live under poverty line.

Abstract

The concepts of rational and moral choices are both of ideal types in social science. These are only use for a social analysis and not for a social engineering. The rational peasants do not indicate the rational choice that have been introduced by Samuel L. Popkin, they are, on the other hand, in moral choice that have been stated by James C. Scott. The commercialization of peasants and agricultural sectors do not reflect the rational peasant's movement. In the essay, the Indonesian case, the commercialization of peasants are an effect of the state's project of colonial era and the New Order, these aren't the articulation of the rational peasants.

Abstract

ABSTRACT:In the globalization era, the generation and development of agricultural technology will influence the competitiveness of Indonesian agricultural products in the global market. In this respect, the critic on unreadiness of Indonesian universities as research universities and the low adoption rate of technology being generated by agricultural research institutions, need a serious attention from all parties dealing with the generation and development of agricultural science and technology. The critic also implies that agricultural research institution in universities and other agricultural research institutions, especially public agricultural research institutions within the Agency for Agricultural Research and Development and the Assessment Institute for Agricultural Technology, should become credible research based agricultural technology and information. Furthermore, the science and technology being generated and developed by those research institutions will be useful if they can be accessed easily in a relatively short periode of time. This is especially true as an agricultural research needs relatively a high financial support, and it should be considered as investment to obtain the greatest beneficial outcomes and impact for the agribusiness society and regional agricultural development. For this reason, an agricultural research institution needs to have an effective information system and management to promote and disseminate its research results. This paper discusses the information function that needs to be conducted in an agricultural research institution.
