Abstract

Marriage is a very important step in women’s life. A woman must be sure that the groom she has chosen is the right man for her entirely life, and she must be ready for the consequence of her choice for the rest of her life. Having a handsome, well-known and prosperous husband, is a part of women’s esteem. When all those things gone, it is a condition in which a wife must show her integrity and faith to her husband. In some parts of the world, there is a belief related to the culture that when a woman gets married, she has to set her life as a house wife with high integrity since it is her dignity. She will lose her pride when she decides to be a widow by divorce. The Great Gatsby and Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck are the literary works that propose the idea of women’s choice in marriage. They agreed to choose the different men to be their husbands because of the success they see at the time. Both works explore women’s problem when their husbands are not as success as their previous boyfriends. The word ‘choice’ then becomes very important since she cannot take what she has given back because her condition before and after marriage is different.

Abstract

The blooming of the English usage every time and everywhere may exterminate the use of local languages. It is also supported by the increase of migration out of or into areas of Indonesia that makes people tend to use Indonesian often than local languages. This might be caused by the personal inability to communicate with indigenous people by their native languages. Besides, the cross cultural marriage also results on the difficulties to determine which mother tongue they introduce to their children. In fact, multicultural condition demands people to use Indonesian frequently. This condition shows that Indonesian works greatly because it is national language. In contrast, the interest of using and learning local language may decrease gradually. This study was conducted to find out whether Indonesian EFL learners of Dayakese background have highly concern to their local language. The data were gathered through direct observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The data collected, then, were analyzed rigorously using descriptive statistics. The findings show that most students have low affection towards their local language, even those who are from indigenous people. Local language is less valued than Indonesian, since they are from different ethnic. Indonesian, then, is highly valued for both formal and informal communication, whether or not it is used as language learning instruction. It is recommended that there is a need for the government to encourage the use or learning of local language. Further, the educational language policy makers together with the Art and Tourism Department consider the promoting local language as a language instruction and a subject. Thus, there will be any ways to keep the ethnicity of Indonesia.

Abstract

Communication needs the effectiveness of delivering information from the speaker to the hearer. Due to this reason, Griece offers to use the theory of cooperative principle to avoid misunderstanding between the speaker and hearer which consist of maxims. Aside from cooperative principle, Svoboda promotes politeness theory (maxims) that also has an enormous influence in a successful conversation. However, the speakers and the hearers as the participants of communication sometimes violate the maxims. The violation of maxims can cause flouting maxims. This paper is focused on analyzing flouting maxims on Igor as the main character in Paulo Coelho’s The Winner Stands Alone novel context and their implications of those communication breakdowns to the other major characters in the novel. Referring to the descriptive analysis of the novel, it was revealed that Igor had violated maxims in the cooperative principle was denoted by various indicators, namely redundancy, less informative, out of topic, obscurity, ambiguity, and disorderliness. Moreover, sometimes Igor did not take account at others’ feeling by violating six maxims in the politeness principle. Hence, Igor as the main character in the novel found himself in troubles in his relationship with girlfriends, wife, and colleagues. Finally, the findings can be used to raise the novel readers’ awareness on the importance of cooperative principle and politeness principle to be applied in real life communication in order to provide knowledge for the readers on how to apply language by making them aware of possible violation.

Abstract

Expressing apology is a universal activity although people have different strategies or ways to express the apology based on the culture, situation, and context. An apology has played a vital role in verbal politeness; it is certainly impolite when someone does not express an apology when he or she has commited an offence to the others. Apologies in the Pragmatic study is classified under speech act theory. An apology based on Searle (1969) is classified as expressive speech acts because it expresses speaker’s physiological attitude. An apology expresses speaker’s sorrow and regret because he/she has offended hearers or readers.  This paper tries to discuss strategies of editors in expressing written apologies in the online newspaper. The objective of this paper is to explain what the strategies of written apologies are in the online newspaper. This study uses qualitative method; the writer chooses descriptive interpretative technique for analyzing data. There are four written apologies in the online neswpapers as data sources in this paper, the data are taken from The Jakarta Post, The Daily Express, The Sun, and Brisbane Times. The writer tries to describe and analyzes utterances in the data sources based on Olshtain & Cohen theory (1986). There are five main strategies in expressing apologies according to Olshtain & Cohen (1986); they are Illocutionary Force Indicating Device (IFID), expression responsibility, explanation/justification, offer repairs, and promise forbearance. The writer found that all of the written apologies used combination strategies, they used IFID by using performative verb: apologize and be sorry then followed by expression resposbility, explanation, offer repairs, and promise forbearance.

Abstract

Assessment is often considered as the most important part in instruction. The way of learners taught and the activity carried out in the classroom are greatly influenced by assessment, and the success of a learning program is commonly determined by the result of assessment. This research focuses on the TOEFL test giving the teachers opportunity to prove that they can communicate ideas effectively by simulating classroom and teacher life comunication. This research is then conducted to find out the English teachers’ mastery in TOEFL Prediction in listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension at Junior and Senior High Schools in Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. The research form is a field research by using written test, observation, interview, and documentary technique in collecting data. The subjects of this research were 16 English teachers of Junior and Senior High Schools in Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. The result shows that the teachers’ mastery of TOEFL Prediction in listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension is classified into good category with the mean score 423.06. It recommends English teachers in Kotabaru to apply some different strategies in teaching listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension of each meeting to get high motivation and interest for both teachers and students. Teachers should develop their professions joining some trainings related to English instruction, encourage their students to practice  skimming and scanning skill and identify the major poins of the passage, and use the context for vocabulary mastery by listening comprehension and for structure and written expression as well in the teaching and learning through games and fun activities.
