Abstract

Learning Arabic in middle school plays an important role in forming students' communication skills and understanding culture and religion. However, there are concerns about the extent to which students understand the materials being taught. This research aims to assess students' understanding of learning Arabic at Al-Tsanawiyah Ali Imron School and to identify the factors that affect this understanding. This research uses a qualitative approach with survey and interview methods. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to students and interviews with the Arabic language teacher at Al-Tsanawiya Ali Amron School. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive techniques to describe students' understanding. The results of the research showed that the majority of students have a good understanding of the basics of the Arabic language, but there are difficulties in the aspects of grammar and vocabulary. Factors affecting students' understanding include teaching methods, students' interests, and parental support. Although students' basic understanding of Arabic is very good, there is a need to improve teaching methods and increase student motivation. Recommendations for curriculum development and training of Arabic language teachers at Al-Tsanawiya Ali Amron High School are also proposed.

Abstract

In the context of Arabic language teaching, the limited availability of effective and engaging learning resources can significantly impact students' learning abilities. Seventh-grade students at MTsS Darul Ulum Budi Agung Medan face difficulties in learning Arabic, particularly in improving their maharah kalam (speaking skills), due to ineffective teaching modules and low student interest in learning Arabic. This research aims to develop an Arabic language learning module on ta'aruf (introduction) material based on problem-solving to enhance the maharah kalam of seventh-grade students at MTsS Darul Ulum Budi Agung Medan. This study employs the Research and Development (RnD) method with the ADDIE model, which consists of five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Constructivism theory, designed by Jean Piaget, serves as the theoretical foundation for developing this problem-solving-based Arabic learning module. In this development, the researchers used several research instruments: direct observation, interviews, expert validation, student and teacher response questionnaires, as well as pre-tests and post-tests. The data analysis techniques employed were descriptive analysis to measure the validity of validator assessments and teacher and student responses, and N-Gain analysis to measure the module's effectiveness. The research findings indicate that the developed Arabic learning module has a validity level of 86% in improving students' maharah kalam, categorized as "very feasible" and requiring no revisions. The practicality of the module, based on responses from teachers and students, is 77.5%, classified as "practical." The effectiveness test using the N-Gain method also shows a percentage of 0.53, falling into the "medium" qualification. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that this Arabic learning module is feasible for implementation for seventh-grade students at MTsS Darul Ulum Budi Agung Medan.

Abstract

Songs are a form of oral literature capable of conveying messages through language and music. This study analyzes the meaning of the lyrics in Atuna Tufuli, popularized by Shirine, using Michael Riffaterre's semiotic theory of poetry. The research aims to uncover meaning through four key elements: displacing, distorting, and creating meaning; heuristic and hermeneutic reading; matrix; and model and hypogram. This descriptive-qualitative research employs a library study approach. The findings show that the lyrics convey complex expressions of love and longing through indirect expression. Heuristic and hermeneutic readings reveal restrained emotional expressions. The matrix emphasizes the desire of children in conflict areas to live in peace and freedom. The model and hypogram indicate intertextual connections with universal themes of longing for a normal childhood and peace-elements also found in classical Arabic poetry. These recurring themes evoke empathy and reflect a broader call for attention to children affected by war and violence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of colonialism and forms of Palestinian resistance as depicted in the film 200 Meters, employing Albert Memmi's theory of colonialism. The film not only portrays acts of resistance but also demonstrates how colonialism shapes the identities of both the colonizer and the colonized, as seen through the protagonist Mustafa's perilous journey to reunite with his family across a 200-meter separation enforced by Israel's apartheid wall. Using qualitative descriptive analysis, this research examines Arabic-language dialogue excerpts and visual sequences from 200 Meters. Key findings include:14 instances revealing Israeli colonial characteristics, categorized as: 3 traits of colonizers in denial, 3 traits of colonizers in acceptance, 3 traits of colonized subjects in acceptance, 4 traits of colonized subjects in rejection, 7 forms of Palestinian resistance, comprising: 2 cases of primordialism, 1 rejection of colonial state symbols, 1 rejection of colonial laws, 1 assimilation attempt, 2 demonstrations of solidarity.

Abstract

Arabic-language wayang orang is a unique form of traditional art adaptation, but academic studies of the narrative structure of this performance are still relatively limited. This study aims to reveal and compare the narrative structures in two Arabic-language wayang orang performance programs through A.J. Greimas' narrative semiotics approach, focusing on the actantial schema that maps the relationships between roles in the storyline. The research method used is descriptive-analytical, with data collection techniques in the form of watching and listening to performance videos, which are then analyzed through the identification of actants such as the sender, subject, object, helper, opponent, and receiver. The results show that the use of Arabic does not change the foundations of Javanese tradition, but forms a more varied storytelling pattern through differences in the relationships between the actants in the two programs. A comparison of the two shows variations in the characters' goals, the intensity of the conflict, and shifts in actantial tension, which produce different narrative nuances even though the objects of their search are similar. Moral and social values are displayed through the characters' journeys and the dynamics of conflict, thus forming a symbolic narrative that remains rooted in the characters of wayang orang. These findings indicate that the adaptation of Arabic creates a hybrid narrative form that enriches the interpretation and meaning of traditional performing arts. The results are expected to serve as an analytical basis for studies.
