Abstract

A research was conducted at the screening house and laboratory of Department of Plant Pests and Diseases,University of North Sumatra, Medan, under room temperature of 20-30oC and relative humidity 78-94%. Theobjectives of this research were to study the morphological and biological characteristic. The results showed thategg, first, second, third and fourth larva instars, and pupae stages of C. sexmaculata were 2,70 ± 0.82; 1,60 ± 0.51;2,30 ± 0.48; 3,10 ± 0.56; 4,50 ± 0,52 and 4,30 ± 0.48 days respectively. Fecundity was 136,20 ± 10.37 eggs, fertility81,82 ± 8,17% and life cycle 52,40 ± 0.69 days. The female lived for 31,20 ± 2,69 days longer than male whichwere 30,00 ± 3,26 days. Rate reproduction (Ro) = 5 and intrinsic rate of increase (rm) = 0,067.

Abstract

The objective of this exsperiment was to study the effect of growth media on growth and yield of pady strawmushroom(Volvariella volvaceae). The semi laboratorium experiment was arranged in Randomized CompleteDesign or Fully Randomized Design (CRD) with six level treatment of growth media ie: a) paddy staw; b) fruithusk of the cofee; c) seagegrass; d) banana leaf; and e) woodsawdust. The data analysis in this experiment was:variance and LSD analysis, correlation analyisis, and analysis of regression.The results of this exsperiment was the treatment of media of woodsawdust cannot be used as a media growt ofrank-mushroom because its failure to forming of fruitious body. Generaly can be said that the treatment of growthmedia of banana leaf as the best growth media of paddy straw-mushroom. Hereinafter, that a highest yield of freshfruit body of pady straw-mushroom got from a treatment growth media of banana leaf that is as much 0.8785 kgm-2

Abstract

The primary cause of wilting in leafy vegetables after harvesting is high intensity of transpiration processthrough natural openings (stomata, hidatoda and lenticels). The mechanism of closing and opening of those naturalopenings is affected by the temperature of the environment. Under high external temperature, the stomata tendto open and vice versa. It is possible to diffuse water into the produce to give a vigorous effect by controlling theexternal temperature and moisture. The process is normally called crisping. The aim of this experiment was tostudy the effectiveness of crisping in order to give vigorous and freshness effects to four different leafy vegetables,namely lettuce, kangkung, leeks and chinese cabbage compared to those without crisping. The crisping processwas involving the immersion of produce in three different water temperatures (30, 40 and 50oC) combined withdifferent lengths of immersion times (1, 3, 5 and 7 minutes) and continued by immediate movement of produce tolow temperature (5±2oC) and stored for 12 hrs before placing and displaying at the show case under temperatureof 10±2oC. Produce treated as controls were provided without immersion in the warm water and stored at roomtemperature, and other was also placed at the show case. The result shows that the effectiveness of crisping dependedupon the physical structure or morphology of the respective vegetables. In general, the water temperatures of 30 and40oC and combined with the lengths of immersion time of 1-3 minutes were effective to improve the freshness andvigorousness of lettuce and leeks, while 7 minutes immersion was effective for kangkung and Chinese cabbage.

Abstract

The research was conducted at Laboratory Pest and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture Udayana University. Thepurpose of the research were to investigate preference of Diaphorina citri on the diference kind of host plant. Theresult of of this study showed that D. citri highly prefers CVPD infected citrus cv. siam, but the highest fecundatyof D. citri was on kemuning plant. Population growth of D. citri performed highly at CVPD infected citrus cv.siam and kemuning.

Abstract

Coated fertilizer must retain the coating during transport and handling, but the nutrients in the coat must bereleased readily in the soil to meet plant demand. Three experimental fertilizer where S is adhered to TSP granulesusing AD1, AD3 or AD2 adhesive were compared with a commercial S coated TSP, Hifert (HF) Goldphos-10.Fertilizer S loss from the granule was measured in a rotating drum friabilator. The highest particle loss was recordedwit HF, and there were no significant differences recorded between AD1, AD2 and AD3. Release of S from the coatedfertilizers was measured by placing the fertilizers between 500 pm nylon mesh and leaching with distilled waterat 20 mL min-1 for up to 96 h. In all release was fastest from AD1 and AD3, and the amount of Ca and P releasedfrom the granule was also highest with these two products. Granules were scanned in the electron microscope, andelectron microprobe both before and after leaching. Dispersion in distilled water was also recorded. The microprobescan confirmed the leaching data with more S remaining in the granule with HF than AD1 or AD3. These dataconfirm earlier studies that the method of adhesion of S to TSP can markedly alter the agronomic performance ofthe fertilizer.

Abstract

The objectives of experiment were: (1) to understand of effect concentration and timing of application of SuperACI foliar organic fertilizer, and (2) to determined of concentration and timing application of Super ACI foliarorganic fertilizer to sweet corn. The experiment was conducted at Rawa Makmur Village, Palaran Sub District,Samarinda City, on July 2004 until October 2004. The experiment design used was Completely Randomized BlockDesign in Faktorial Experiment 4 x 3 with three replications. The first factor was concentration of Super ACI (K)consisted 4 levels, namely: no Super ACI application (k0), 0,71 ml l-1 water (k1), 1,43 ml l-1 water (k2), and 2,15ml l-1 water (k3). The second factor was timing of application (W) consisted 3 levels, namely : 12, 24, and 36 daysafter planting (w1), 15, 30, and 45 days after planting (w2), and 18, 36 and 54 days after planting. The result ofexperiment showed that: (1) the concentration of Super ACI was significantly on the plant height at 42 days afterplanting, blooming time of male and female, harvest time, length of cob, diameter of cob, weight of cob, and affectedsignificantly on the yield of cob. The highest of cob yield namely 8,77 ton ha-1 was achieved on 1,43 ml l-1 waterof Super ACI; (2) timing of application was no significant on the plant height at 14, 28, and 42 days after planting,blooming time of male and female, harvest time, length of cob, diameter of cob, weight of cob, and yield of cob;and (3) no interaction between concentration and timing of application of Super ACI foliar organic fertilizer on theall parameters.

Abstract

Research on prolonging vase life of chrysanthemum aimed to recognize some concentration of sucrose andcitric acid applied on solution to prolong vase life of chrysanthemum. Randomized Block Design was applied onthis research with two factors. First factor was concentration of sucrose, consisted of four levels which were 0, 2,4, and 6 percent of sucrose. Second factor was concentration of citric acid, consisted of four levels which were0, 200, 400, and 600 ppm of citric acid. All combination treatments were replicate two times. Variables whichwere observed in this experiment i.e.: vaselife, percentage of full bloom, percentage of flower wilting, and totalof absorbed solution. The results showed that the longest vase life of chrysanthemum cut flower was found onsample treated by 2.70% of sucrose combined with 400 ppm of citric acid. The longest vase life was 13.02 daysor 6.02 days longer than control.
