Abstract

Differential equations is a branch of mathematics which is closely related to mathematical modeling that arises in real-world problems. Problem solving ability is an essential component to solve contextual problem of differential equations properly. The purposes of this study are to describe contextual teaching and learning (CTL) model in differential equations course, to improve lecturers’ abilities in implementing CTL, and to improve students’ problem solving ability in differential equations. The study was conducted in the fifth semester of 2015/2016 academic year with 34 students of mathematics education Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta as participants. The CTL model was applied by lesson study approach which involved three stages namely plan, do, and see in each cycle. This research was conducted in four cycles. The study results found that discovery-based CTL could be applied in differential equations course. The lecturer abilities to design discovery-based contextual learning plan, to present real-world problem in learning process, to design learning strategy and assessment instruments of problem solving improved significantly. Problem solving ability of students also improved during teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the mathematics problems in the eighth grade mathematics textbook of new Indonesian curriculum (K-13) based on The Programme for International Student Assesment (PISA) frameworks. The object of this study was the the revised version textbooks of the eighth grade mathematics student’s book published by The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) in 2014. The framework of the analysis in this study was the PISA components consisting of process, content, and context with its categories. The research method was descriptive quantitative. The data was collected by observing the contents of the textbook and interviewing the students and the teachers in SMP Negeri 2 Rembang. The analysis showed that the contents of the textbook were in accordance to the PISA components. The result also indicated that in both semester of the students’ book, the problems involving the process of employing mathematical concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning were more dominant than others. Moreover, in the contexts, the problems were dominated by the personal context. Furthermore, the first semester students’ books were dominated by the change and relationships contents while the second semester books were dominated by the space and shape contents.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the use of fractional cards on teaching in the fifth grade students of Elementary School. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The researcher used observation, interview, and documentation to collect the data. The results showed that there was an increase on the students' enthusiasm for learning process, and there were 27 students (69.23%) that have a score above the Minimum Criteria of Mastery (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal/KKM). The study concludes that the use of fractional cards able to help the learning process on the fractions material of the fifth grade students of Elementary School.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the thinking processes of climber, camper, and quitter high school students in solving mathematical problems. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. Subjects were determined by purposive sampling. The technique of collecting data was done by task-based interviews. Based on the results of data analysis it can be concluded that: (1) the profiles of climber’s thinking processes are: (a) assimilation and abstraction  in understanding problems, (b) assimilation, accommodation, and abstraction in planning problem solving (c) assimilation, accommodation, and abstraction in implementing the plan of problem solving, and  (d) accommodation in checking the solution; (2) the profiles of camper’s thinking processes are: (a) assimilation in understanding mathematical problems, (b) assimilation, accommodation, and abstraction in planning problem solving, (c) abstraction in implementing the plan of problem solving, and (d) assimilation in checking the solution; (3) the profiles of quitter’s thinking processes are: (a) assimilation and abstraction in understanding problems, (b) assimilation, accommodation, and abstraction in planning problem solving, (c) assimilation, accommodation, and abstraction in implementing the plan of problem solving, and (d) assimilation in checking the solution.
