Abstract

N. WULIJARNI - SOETJIPTO, 1985. Effect of desiccation and storage temperature on the viability of seeds of Citrus amblycarpa. Berita Biologi 3 (3): 95- 100. Seeds of Citrus amblycarpa (Hassk.) Ochse were dried using several methods. The seeds remained fully viable when the moisture content were reduced to around 5%. Upon storage, those seeds stored at 28°, 10° and 4°C were still viable after 287 days. Further observation showed that storage at 10°, 4° and - 10°C enabled seeds to maintain their germination until the end of the experiment, i.e. 910 days. Therefore, it is concluded that C.amblycarpa seeds tend to follow the behaviour of the orthodox seeds.

Abstract

DAISY WOWOR. 1985. Population structure and spawning period of Udang Regang (Macrobrachium sintangense). BeritaBiologi 3(3): 116- 120. Population structure and spawning period of Macrobrachium sintangense was observed in a coast of a small artificial lake, Situ Ciletuh, Ci gombong, West Java, from December 1981 to August 1982. Examination of the class-size frequency indicated the growth rate of body length of the population, and its spawning periods. The mean growth rate of carapace was 3.44 mm per month.Sex ratio was 1:1, significant at the 95% level. The number of the larger males is greater than the females, which indicate the phenomenon of sexual dimorphism. This is due to the differences of growth and the maximum body size attained by the males and females. It was observed that M. sintangense spawns throughout the year, maximum spawning activity occurs between March and June.

Abstract

M. DJAJASASMITA. 1985. Molluscan fauna of the two stream rivers of Riau. Berita Biologi 3(3): 121 - 124. - A preliminary study on the composition and population density of the molluscan fauna in the streams of the rivers Tiwi (stony and sandy bottom) and Tandun Kecil (clayed muddy bottom), in Riau, East Sumatra, has been carried out, in July 1977. The molluscs collected consisted of Brotia costula, Clea bocki and Corbicula moltkiana in Tiwi River and B. costula, Pseudodon vondembuschianus and Rectiden graeilis in Tandun Kecil River. B. costula dominate in both localities, 86.08% and 72.58% respectively; the other species range from 2.42% to 25%. In general both localities have low molluscan population density, 41.2 m" and 26.8 m" respectively. The food condition is rather sufficiently available, the water quality may support the molluscan life, the physical condition, however, seems to be less suitable.

Abstract

D.I. HARTOTO, N. TRISNANINGSIH & I.RACHMATIKA. 1985. Fish niche of Ci Siih and CiJaralang estuaries, Sunda strait, West Java. Berita Biologi 3 (3) : 77 - 83. - A study of the fish community of Ci Silih and Ci Jaralang estuaries, Sunda Strait, West Java was conducted during the peak of dry season, August 1982. This study was aimed to apply Hutchinsonian niche theory into operational level and to reveal the stage of succession processes on the two estuarine fish communities. The study shows that type of refuges were more variate in Ci Jaralang than in Ci Siih and diversity of physical structure of spatial habitat resources affected a more diverse type of refuges. Means of absolute spatial niche breadth as a measure of concentration (?i) and uncertainty(?i) are larger in Ci Siih than in Ci Jaralang. Those facts indicate that fish species in Ci Siih were more dispersed in occupying the spatial habitat resources available. The larger (?i) value indicate that these two fish communities were still in early stages in their succession. The significantly similar means of absolute spatial niche overlap shows that the intensity of resources sharing on these two communities are nearly similar and are quite intensive.

Abstract

YAYUK RAHAYUNINGSIH SUHARDJONO. 1985. Berita Biologi 3 (3): 104 - 107. The study of insect fauna in the primary, secondary and swamp forest floor had been done in the Wanariset forest, East Kalimantan, during tije mid of dry season.September to October 1979. More than 18,000 specimens were collected by pit fall traps. This material consisted of 87 families belonging to 15 ordines. Based on the feeding habits of the insects caught during the study, 325% were phytophagous specks,29.07% predator-parasites, 20.93% decomposers and YIA undetermined species. The high density was shown by Entomobryidae, Sminttraridae and Fonrnkidae.

Abstract

LUCIA FIDHIANY. 1985. Distribution andpropulation structure of Macrobrachium pilimanus (De Man) at Cisadane river. Berita Biologi 3 (3) :125 - 127. Study on spatial distribution and population structure of Macrobrachium pilimanus was conducted at Cigombong River and Cisalopa River. Based on seven habitat types in a river pool, distribution pattern of the prawn contagious. The prawn is a torrent species, because it prefers running water with gravels and stones more than stagnant one.Based on the size frequency classes, the population are bi - or polimodal for the male, and unimodal for the female. Sex ratio is equal, but the quantity of larger male is greater than female that indicate sexual dimorphism.

Abstract

SULASTRI, I. RACHMATIKA & D.I. HARTOTO. 1985. Feeding and reproductive patterns of Torspp. as a base for its aquaculture. Berita Biologi 3(3): 84 -90. A study on the feeding and reproductive characteristics of Tor spp. as a base for aquaculture was done in laboratory and field conditions. Qualitative observation on the feeding habits of Tor douronensis (C.V.) do not show a restriction of the main diet to autochthonous sources. Algae were the main diet, followed by detritus, insects, diatoms, plant material, mosquitoes larvae and desmids. Laboratory observations show that T. douronensis eat first the food that is most concentrated, followed by the food that floats on the surface and last, foods on the bottom. Spearman Rank Correlation reveals that there was food overlaps between groups of fishes of different maturity stages from species collected in the field. It was found that there was a morphological change of male T. soro and a decrease of condition factors that were correlated with the increase of maturity stage. Vision as a significant factor affecting feeding and reproduction of Tor spp. and its relation to aquaculture application was discussed.

Abstract

SRI HARTINI. 1985. The infestation pattern of arthropod parasites on rat at Purwodadi Botanical Garden. East Java. Berita Biologi 3(3) : 108-110. An investigation to find out the pattern of infestation of arthropod parasites on Rattus tiomanicus and Rattus rattus diardi was conducted in Purwodadi Botanical Garden, East Java. The parasites studied were Laelaps nutalli, Echinolaelaps echidninus (Acarina), Hoplopleura pacifica, Polyplax spinulosa (Anoplura) and Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera). It was concluded that parasite prevalence depends on habitat, age and sex of the host. The number of parasite infesting R. tiomanicus is greater than that of R.r. diardi, Adult rats have a higher prevalence rate than juveniles; likewise female adult rats are also higher than other sex and age group.

Abstract

D.I. HARTOTO, SULASTRI & I. RACHMATIKA. 1985. Reproductive pattern of some Cyprinids species at Lebak Lebung flood plain area,Lubuk Lampan, South Sumatera. Berita Biologi 3(3): 128 - 135. -A study on reproductive characteristics of three Cyprinids species was conducted in Lubuk Lumpam; a floodplain area in South Sumatera during the early rainy season of 1981. A study of fecundity supported by other biological aspects was used as an approach to reveal the reproductive pattern. Analysis of the Osteochilus hasselti showed that the fish was an early and multiple spawner that strats to breed in a submerged vegetation habitat type before the peak of food abundance in the rainy season. All of the species could not be grouped as small brood spawners, including the least fecund fish Rasbora lateristriata that spawns late in its life span. Chela oxygasteroides showed a similar pattern to the two other species except that it was predicted to spawn during the time of food abundance. Based on Horn's diagram, recapitulation analysis on factors of reproductive strategy indicated that three Cyprinids could be grouped as r - strategist.
