Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) known to cause Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) disease are divided into several subtypes (A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K) and Circulating Recombinant Form (CRF). Different characteristics of subtype of the virus and its interaction with the host can affect the severity of the disease. This study was to analyze HIV-1 subtypes circulatingin HIV/AIDS patients from the East Java region descriptively and to analyze its relationship with clinical stadiums of HIV/AIDS. Information from this research was expected to complement the data of mocular epidemiology of HIV in Indonesia. This study utilited blood plasma from patients who had been tested to be HIV positive who sected treatment to or were reffered to the Intermediate Care Unit of Infectious Disease (UPIPI) Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from various area representing the East Java regions. Plasma was separated from blood samples by centrifugation for use in the the molecular biology examination including RNA extraction, nested PCR using specific primer for HIV gp120 env gene region, DNA purifying, DNA sequencing, and homology and phylogenetic analysis. Based on the nucleotide sequence of the HIV gp120 env gene, it was found that the most dominant subtypes in East Java were in one group of Circulating Recombinant Form (CRF) that is CRF01_AE, CRF33_01B and CRF34_01B which was also found in Southeast Asia. In the phylogenetic tree, most of HIV samples (30 samples) are in the same branch with CRF01_AE, CRF33_01B and CRF34_01B, except for one sample (HIV40) which is in the same branch with subtype B. HIV subtypes are associated with clinical stadiums (disease severity) since samples from different stages of HIV disease have the same subtype.

Abstract

The object of this research is to determine mutual converted value between unfinished leather to finished leather as commercial commodity. The raw materials are wet chrome tanned goatskins which are converted into jacket leather and chrome tanned goatskins into glace leather. Weight, wide, thickness is measured during this process, and the last is carried out in accordance with Indonesia Industrial Standard, for each step of the process. The sample taken in accordance with ISO. 2588 1973 is n = 0,5 √N, where N is the number of cattle slaughtered. The sheeps taken were 148 sheets (197 sheets available) and the goats taken were 130 sheets (195 sheets available). The conclusion of this research are the conversion value of some sheepskins and goatskins from chrome tanned, sheepskins into glace  and goatskins into jacket.

Abstract

There is an increasing amount of evidence that oxidative stress related to hypertension can damage the function of diverse structures such as aorta. It is a well-established fact that chlorogenic acid and anthocyanine found in purple sweet potato generates bioactive compound with antihypertensive and antioxidant activities. The present study sought to investigate antioxidant activity of extract ethanol of purple sweet potato (EP) in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA–salt)–induced hypertensive rats (Rattus norvegicus). The rats were orally administrated a 95% ethanol extract of purple sweet potato (var. Ayamurasaki) (EP) in a daily dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight for 4 weeks. Aorta total malondialdehyde (MDA) and histopathology of aorta abdominal were examined. Aorta injury was observed in DOCA-salt hypertensive group rats compared to normotensive group rats, as aorta MDA significantly increased  (P<0.05). In contrast, treatment of DOCA-salt hypertensive rats with different dose of EP significantly reduced the total aorta MDA, as well as repair kidney damage, suppressed smooth muscle cell proliferation and lessen aorta wall thickening compared to controls. This is the first report that demonstrated blood pressure lowering and antioxidative effects of an ethanol extract of purple sweet potato, containing chlorogenic acid, in a DOCA–salt model of hypertension.

Abstract

N. WULIJARNI - SOETJIPTO, 1985. Effect of desiccation and storage temperature on the viability of seeds of Citrus amblycarpa. Berita Biologi 3 (3): 95- 100. Seeds of Citrus amblycarpa (Hassk.) Ochse were dried using several methods. The seeds remained fully viable when the moisture content were reduced to around 5%. Upon storage, those seeds stored at 28°, 10° and 4°C were still viable after 287 days. Further observation showed that storage at 10°, 4° and - 10°C enabled seeds to maintain their germination until the end of the experiment, i.e. 910 days. Therefore, it is concluded that C.amblycarpa seeds tend to follow the behaviour of the orthodox seeds.

Abstract

N.WULIJARNI-SOETJIPTO.1988. Effect of drying and storage temperature on the viability of kemuning(Murraya panicuhta) seeds, Berita Biologi 3(8): 424 - 429.Seeds of kemuning {Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack) were dried under room temperature (28°±2°C),and then stored for a duration of 9 weeks at 28°, 10°, 4° and - 10°C. The seeds remained fully viable when the moisture content was reduced to 5%. After storage at 10° or 4°C the seeds having 5% moisture content remained almost fully viable.Their viability decreased to around 60% at - 10°C, and less than 40% at 28°C.Seeds having higher moisture contents still maintained their viability after being stored at 10°C. However, they lost their viability when stored at higher or lower temperatures. It appeared that the seeds contained much higher percentage of saturated fatty acids compared with the unsaturated fatty adds. It is concluded that the kemuning seeds do not tend to follow the behaviour of true orthodox seeds, since they do not seem to withstand subfreezing temperature although they may toleratev drying.
