Abstract

The World Trade Organization (WTO) plays a significant role in creating stability in international trade. As an institution tasked with regulating and facilitating global trade, the WTO aims to create a transparent, fair, and open trading system for all member countries. Through various agreements, dispute resolution mechanisms, and trade policy supervision, the WTO seeks to ensure the smooth flow of goods and services in the international market. However, challenges such as the gap between developed and developing countries, digitalization, and environmental sustainability issues continue to test the relevance of this organization. This study uses a qualitative method based on literature studies to explore the role of the WTO in addressing these challenges. The results show that although the WTO has made a major contribution to strengthening global economic cooperation, further efforts are needed to ensure inclusive involvement of all member countries and adapt trade rules to current global dynamics.

Abstract

Good development is distinguished by not solely pursuing perpetual growth but also by providing positive impacts that are accessible to every stratum of society. This research aims to determine whether Sumatra's economy in 2022 has yielded equitable income distribution across all layers of society, particularly when examined in-depth in each economic sector. By utilizing Miyazawa's input-output table analysis, we obtained several significant findings. The Manufacturing Industry emerged prominently as Sumatra's financial backbone and critical sector. Furthermore, out of the 17 industries, there are 9 inclusive sectors, 2 of which are vital, namely the Manufacturing Industry and the Transportation and Storage. Lastly, Other Services Activities significantly influence the income of the lower 40 percent bracket.

Abstract

Exchange rate fluctuations of the Indonesian rupiah against foreign currencies significantly impact rice trade in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the effects of exchange rate fluctuations on rice export and import volumes and their implications for national food security. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, using secondary data from Bank Indonesia, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), and the Ministry of Trade for the period 2019-2023. The findings reveal that the weakening of the rupiah increases the cost of rice imports, while its strengthening reduces the competitiveness of rice exports. Import volumes surged significantly in 2023, whereas rice exports experienced a sharp decline. The rice trade deficit reached its peak in the past five years. Strategic policies such as enhancing domestic productivity, diversifying import sources, and stabilizing exchange rates through monetary interventions are necessary to manage these impacts. These measures are expected to achieve sustainable national food security.

Abstract

This study examines the determinants of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indonesia from 2019 to 2024 when COVID-19 was in the intersection - using a quantitative approach and the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) methodology. The analysis focuses on macroeconomic variables, including Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, Human Development Index (HDI), export levels, and Global Economic Policy Uncertainty (GEPU), assessing their short-term and long-term effects on FDI inflows. The findings reveal that in the short term, inflation, exchange rates, and GEPU do not significantly impact FDI. However, in the long term, GDP and HDI exhibit a positive and significant influence on FDI inflows, while interest rates and export levels demonstrate a significant negative effect. These results underscore the critical role of macroeconomic stability, human capital development, and coherent investment policies in attracting and sustaining FDI in Indonesia during the economic recovery phase. The study offers strategic insights for policymakers to optimize Indonesia’s investment climate amid global economic uncertainties.

Abstract

Human capital refers to the intellectual qualities and abilities of individuals that can be used to increase productivity. The theory of human capital, put forward by Gery Becker, explains that investment in education and health can increase individual productivity, thereby driving economic growth. Education and welfare are interrelated, where good health can support a quality learning process and good education can encourage better health. The literature study method was chosen to analyze the role of education and health in reducing inequality and poverty in Indonesia with a focus on the perspective of human capital. The use of secondary data in this study is used to test existing empirical evidence and theories, so that it can provide an in-depth understanding of the role of education and health in developing quality human resources. Increasing public awareness of the importance of primary and secondary education also faces challenges related to gaps in access to education services between urban and rural areas and between provinces, which also have an impact on differences in health outcomes. The government supports human resource development through the Program Indonesia Pintar (PIP) and the Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) to improve education and health.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of corruption perception index, market size, inflation, and trade openness on foreign direct investment in eight ASEAN countries in 2013-2022. The data used in this study are secondary data, namely data on foreign direct investment, corruption perception index, market size, inflation, and trade openness in eight ASEAN countries in 2013-2022. The analytical tool used in this research is panel data regression with Random Effect Model. The results of this study indicate that the corruption perception index variable has a negative and significant effect on foreign direct investment in eight ASEAN countries in 2013-2022, while the market size, inflation, and trade openness variables have a positive and significant effect on foreign direct investment in eight ASEAN countries in 2013-2022.
