Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is a condition of severe nutritional deficiency caused by an insufficient intake of energy and protein from daily food consumption. The most lethal impacts are declined IQ score, decreased cognitive development, and diminished sensory integration, which could harm the life of the children and resulted in the loss of the national youth generation. One effort to overcome this problem is to develop a diet alternative using F100 materials substituted from kelor (Moringa Oleifera) flour as the main ingredient and reform it into edible biscuits. Kelor leaves contain multiple micronutrient elements that are essential for children and have been proven to increase the nutritional status of children with malnutrition. Objective: This research aims to identify the effect of the supplementation of F100 biscuits modified with kelor flour substitution on the nutritional status of under-five children with malnutrition. Methods: This was a pre-experimental study conducted in Kendari city Indonesia from May-June 2019. Twenty children were included and given modified biscuits on a scale of 100 gm per day for six consecutive weeks. Data were analyzed using dependent and independent sample t-test.Results: There was a significant effect of the supplementation of F100 modified biscuits on the nutritional status of under-five children with malnutrition (p = 0.002).Conclusion: The F100 supplementation modified with kelor flour substitution biscuits has been proven to be effective in increasing the nutritional status of under-five children with malnutrition.

Abstract

Background: Worldwide more than 20 million low birth weights occur annually with the incidence of 15 to 20%, majority of this occur in low- and middle-income countries and 95.6% occur in developing nations. Its regional estimate was 28% in South Asia, 13% in sub-Saharan Africa and 13% in least developed countryObjective:  To assess factors associated with low birth weight among newborns in Jugal Hospital, Harari Regional State, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among newborns in Jugal hospital, Ethiopia from June 01 to July 10, 2019. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study subjects. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with low birth weight among newbornsResults: The magnitude of low birth weight was 19.53%. Women who had previous history of low birth weight had 5.21 times higher odds ratio of delivered low birth weight baby than their counterparts [AOR = 5.21, 95% CI: (1.5-14.2)], and pregnant women who delivered before 37 weeks of gestational age had 4.8 times higher odds ratio of delivered low birth weight neonates than those delivered at term [AOR = 4.8, 95% CI: (1.3-10.4)]Conclusion: The prevalence of low birth weight in Harar, Jugal Hospital was 19.53%. Low birth weight in the previous pregnancy and gestational age <37 weeks, and showed significant association with birth weight neonates. Governmental and non-governmental organizations working on maternal and child health should focus on identified factors in order to tackle the problem of birth weight.

Abstract

Background: Grilled intestines (sate usus) is one of favorite foods in Yogyakarta, not only because of its delicious taste, but also because of its cheap price and unique shape. To ensure the food safety, the existence of Escherichia coli was examined.  Objective: To identify factors related to the existence of Escherichia coli on sate usus in one of traditional food stall (angkringan) at Malioboro tourism area. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involved 38 respondents selected using accidental sampling from April to May 2019. The determinants of the existence of Escherichia coli include the sellers' knowledge, behavior, personal hygiene, food serving practice, and sanitation facilities. The existence of Escherichia coli was tested using a laboratory test. The correlations between Escherichia coli and its determinants were analyzed using Chi-Square tests and simple logistic regression. Results: The result of the laboratory test showed that 39.5% of sate usus positively contained Escherichia coli bacteria. Among all factors, only food serving practice was associated with the existence of Escherichia coli. The sellers who had poor food serving practice were three times more likely having Escherichia coli on their sate usus (OR= 3.30, 95% CI= 1.967-5.536).Conclusion: These findings suggested that public health providers should design programs to provide training for food sellers in order to serve food well and healthily. This is crucial to do to ensure the food safety in the tourist areas in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: A cigarette pack is the most intimate property and frequently seen by smokers every time they want to start smoking. It gives tobacco industry the opportunity to scrutinize every single space including the inside part of the pack to promote tobacco product and it is often called a mini billboard. Objective: To analyze possible violations if any against the existing regulations on packaging and labelling and to uncover packaging design and types of promotional elements on cigarette packs. Methods: A purposive sample based on the assessment and discussion with the representatives of National Agency of Drug and Food Control that generated a total of 42 cigarette packs representing 18 sample from Jakarta, 5 most popular brands, 18 special edition packs, and 1 illegal cigarettes. The observation units, variables and observable signs that covered the materials, size, content of the entire pack including the cigarettes stick were set by Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance and analyzed against the existing regulation. Results: There were two brands produced in 2019 that did not comply with the latest sets of Pictorial Health Warning. About 40.5% of sample (n=17) did not include information on production dates on the pack as mandated by Government Regulation Number 109/2012. The back panels of the top of pictorial health warning in all machine-made cigarettes were partially bunged up by excise tax stamps with exception of hand-rolled clove cigarettes. The tobacco industry took the advantage of the cigarette packs' violations for product promotion, among others providing information on filter technology, promoting the upcoming tobacco-sponsored events, relating the product with imported goods by mentioning the country of brand origin, and using the flip lid of the pack to promote the brand name reputation. A total of 83.3% (n=35) samples gives additional products description such as bold, mild, lights, super, and special. Conclusion: The tobacco industry uses the ample spaces on both outer and inner panels of cigarette packs to promote their products, no single corners are left empty. The study confirmed violations of the regulation for product promotion.
