Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain how ASEAN solved problems in stabilizing their territory. As we know the formation of ASEAN as a regional organization of Southeast Asia is to liberate countries in Southeast Asia from the influence of The Great Powers. This is in line with the realism that deeply bound within ASEAN. Ahead of the 15th anniversary of the formation of ASEAN, there was a major conflict between Vietnam and Cambodia, precisely in the 1970s. This is one of the catalysts that destabilize the ASEAN’s stances to avoid various types of multilateral relations. The method used in this research is qualitative with historical analysis from various literatures. After successfully resolving the conflict, in 1994 ASEAN established ARF as a workplace to discuss security in Asia, in order to facilitate such conflicts to occur again. ARF members are not only ASEAN countries but also superpowers. This is contrary to the foundation of ASEAN itself. In essence it shows that realism is willing to subdue with liberalism.

Abstract

Today’s International Relations perspectives mostly dominated by eurocentric point ofview. These perspectives, become the core of IR studies and not realized by scholars from many non-Western countries in the studies and keep them away from their own“realities” in their analysis. The rise of Global IR opens some new possibilities to develop an inclusive perspective where non-Western might have their own point of view based on their own context. Using Global IR as a stepping stone, this article tries to elaborate the history of Makassar in the 17th century and its place in Southeast Asia history and to connect it with the rise of ASEAN.

Abstract

This writing describes several important arguments from Julian Nida-Rümelin concerning academisation madness, which happens in United States and European Union. It shows also the relevance of this argument for Indonesia. This academisation madness can be seen clearly in the obsession of academic title as a result of university education. At the same time, the skilled labor education that is created specifically for certain line of jobs is being forgotten or underestimated. This madness happens, because of the misunderstanding of the society and government concerning the true meaning of education, and how educational policies have direct social, political and economic consequences in reality. Nida-Rümelin provides a deep analysis concerning this matter. He argues also about the importance of government and public wide recognition on the value of skilled education in comparison with academic education. Both have different focus but possess the same philosophical paradigm, namely education as personality development. This article offers also several critical considerations to Nida-Rümelin’s arguments.
