Abstract

Background: Personal hygiene is the act of taking care of oneself, it is also referring to as an act of maintaining the cleanliness of one's body and clothing to improve overall health and well-being. The purpose of the study was to examine if undergraduates know about personal hygiene, investigate if undergraduates of University of Ilorin differ in personal hygiene knowledge based on age, and assess if there is a difference in knowledge of personal hygiene among undergraduates of University of Ilorin based on gender. Methods: A descriptive research design of using surveys was employed for this study. Multi-stage sampling techniques of simple random, proportionate, and convenient sampling techniques were used to select 398 respondents for the study. The researcher developed a questionnaire validated by three experts from the Department of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, University of Ilorin was used for the study. ANOVA and Independent t-test was used to test the hypotheses. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Results: The findings from this study revealed that undergraduates of University of Ilorin know about personal hygiene. The mean values of Yes (330/ 82.9%) is greater than the mean value of No (68/17.8%). There is a significant difference in knowledge of personal hygiene among undergraduates of University of Ilorin based on age (p= 0.023). There is a significant difference in knowledge of personal hygiene among undergraduates of University of Ilorin based on gender (p= 0.018). Conclusion: The study concluded that undergraduates of University of Ilorin know about personal hygiene.

Abstract

Background: Breast screening reduces breast cancer-associated morbidity and mortality, a means to early detection, also increases the chances for successful treatment and cure of the disease. This study was conducted to assess the husband's permission as a determinant of breast cancer screening among women of childbearing age in The Southwest zone, Nigeria. Method: Ex-post facto research design was used for this paper. A total sample of 768 women of childbearing age in The Southwest zone, Nigeria from a population of 8,261,284 were selected through multi-stage sampling procedures of simple random sampling, proportionate, and systematic sampling techniques. Out of the 768 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 762 were valid for analyses. Inferential statistics of a one-sample t-test was used to test the data collected at 0.05 level of significance. Results: The results revealed that husband’s permission is a determinant of breast cancer screening among women of childbearing age was significant with a t-value of 4.921 and a p-value of 0.001 at 0.05 level of significance. Conclusion: It was concluded that the husband's permission was a determinant of breast cancer screening among women of childbearing age in The Southwest zone, Nigeria. Based on the conclusion, it was recommended that husbands should be encouraged and enlightening on breast cancer and its screening in other to allow their wives to go for screening by governmental and non-governmental organizations through mass media, community, and town campaign of breast cancer screening.

Abstract

Background: Students in the health sector should have more health literacy so that they can show better health practices as well. However, unfortunately, a preliminary study on students in the field of public health showed that almost 50% of students have eating habits and physical activity that was not following health recommendations. The behavior of consuming fried foods in this group of students can be a risk factor for hypercholesterolemia. For this reason, it is necessary to study the habit of consuming fried foods as a risk factor for hypercholesterolemia. Methods: The study was using analytical research with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used a purposive sampling method. The minimum sample size is 91 people. Data analysis used univariate, bivariate using chi-square test, and multivariate using logistic regression. Results: The results of the bivariate analysis showed significant results, namely BMI (RP= 2.20; 95% CI= 1.09-4.43; p= 0.03). Consumption of fried foods (RP= 3.33; 95% CI= 1.69-6.57; p= 0.001). Physical activity (RP= 2.23; 95% CI= 1.04-4.79; p= 0.03). The result of the bivariate analysis that was not significant was smoking (RP= 1.28; 95% CI= 0.55-2.98; p= 0.547). The results of multivariate analysis showed that the most influencing risk factor for hypercholesterolemia was fried food consumption (RP= 5.42; 95% CI= 1.18-16.21; p= 0.003). Conclusion: The factors associated with hypercholesterolemia are BMI, consumption of fried foods, and physical activity. The most influencing risk factor for hypercholesterolemia is the consumption of fried foods.

Abstract

Background: One of the strategic efforts to reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR) is through the provision of comprehensive midwifery care. from pregnancy, childbirth to the puerperium. Indicators of success in midwifery care can be seen from the quality of life of postpartum mothers. Preliminary studies in Agam and Pasaman districts show that 50% of post-partum mothers have a poor quality of life. Methods: This analytic descriptive study with a cross-sectional design involved postpartum mother as the subject. The sample of the study was many postpartum mothers who received midwifery services at practicing independent midwives in Pasaman and Agam districts. Samples were taken using the accidental sampling technique within 1 month. A questionnaire for evaluating the quality of life of postpartum women is used as an instrument to measure the quality of life of postpartum mothers. Data were analyzed univariate and bivariate using the chi-square test Results: A total of 75.4% of the research subjects had a good quality of life. There is a relationship between service quality (p= 0.001) and maternal satisfaction (p= 0.001) with the quality of life for postpartum mothers. Conclusion: The better the quality of midwifery services and the level of satisfaction with services, the better the quality of life for postpartum mothers. Therefore, it is recommended that midwives maintain the quality of midwifery care starting from pregnancy, childbirth to childbirth on an ongoing basis (continuity of care).
