Abstract

This study examines the economic transformation of the Indonesia–Malaysia border region from traditional barter systems to a modern cross-border trade ecosystem. The research adopts a qualitative approach, drawing on recent Scopus-indexed literature, policy reports, and relevant academic sources. The findings reveal that the transformation process is multidimensional, involving the interactions among economic integration, institutional development, technological advancement, and socio-cultural adaptation. While the introduction of formal trade systems has enhanced market efficiency, expanded trade volumes, and improved regional connectivity, traditional barter practices and informal trade continue to persist, forming a hybrid economic structure in border areas. Furthermore, the study identifies key challenges, including institutional fragmentation, regulatory inconsistencies, limited infrastructure, and unequal access to economic opportunities, which contribute to uneven development across border regions. Digitalization is a critical driver of the transition toward a modern trade ecosystem, particularly through the expansion of e-commerce and digital financial services. However, socio-cultural factors remain influential, as local communities maintain traditional practices based on trust and social networks. This study contributes to the literature by providing an integrative perspective that bridges economic, institutional, and socio-cultural dimensions of border economic transformation. The findings highlight the importance of inclusive policy design that accommodates both formal and informal systems to ensure sustainable and equitable development.

Abstract

MSMEs in Kubu Raya Regency operate in a regional business environment where digital platforms are increasingly used to expand market reach, maintain customer relationships, and respond to changing consumer behavior. However, differences in digital marketing capability and data literacy may limit how effectively MSMEs convert digital adoption into measurable marketing performance. This study examines the effects of Digital Marketing Capability and Data Literacy on Marketing Performance, with Customer Engagement positioned as a mediating variable. A quantitative survey was conducted involving 150 MSME owners and/or managers selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings show that Digital Marketing Capability and Data Literacy are positively associated with Customer Engagement and Marketing Performance, while Customer Engagement is also positively related to Marketing Performance. The mediation results indicate that Customer Engagement helps explain the relationship between digital capability, data literacy, and marketing outcomes, although the strength of the mediation should be interpreted cautiously and supported by complete reporting of indirect effects, direct effects, confidence intervals, and VAF values. This study contributes to digital marketing research by highlighting Customer Engagement as a behavioral mechanism that links internal digital readiness with MSME marketing outcomes in a regional Indonesian context. Practically, the findings suggest that MSMEs should not only adopt digital tools but also strengthen data-based decision-making and customer interaction strategies to improve marketing effectiveness.

Abstract

Rapid growth in motor vehicles in major cities often outpaces the development of effective parking management systems, leading to traffic congestion, illegal parking, and a lack of transparency in parking revenue. Kuala Lumpur, through Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), has implemented an integrated digital parking system that could serve as a model for reforming parking governance in Indonesian cities. This study analyzes DBKL’s digital parking management policies and practices to develop an urban parking governance model grounded in good governance principles. The study employed a qualitative approach, combining policy analysis with field observations. Data were gathered through a literature review and an analysis of DBKL policy documents, alongside direct observation of the parking system's implementation in Kuala Lumpur; the data were then analyzed descriptively to identify best practices. The study finds that DBKL uses a digital, technology-based parking system with parking zones and progressive tariffs integrated with urban transportation policies. Digital payment systems and technology-based monitoring have proven effective in improving management transparency and curbing unauthorized parking, supported by a structured management framework and clear regulations. Integrating good governance principles with digital technology has been shown to improve the efficiency, transparency, and sustainability of urban parking governance. These findings offer valuable policy insights for local governments in Indonesia as they design parking systems that are more orderly, transparent, and integrated with public transportation.
