Abstract

This study focuses on the representation of feminism in Andrea Hirata’s novel Ayah, based on the following research questions: 1) How is feminism represented through the mother character’s dialogue in Andrea Hirata’s novel Ayah? 2) How is feminism represented through the mother character in Andrea Hirata’s novel Ayah? The objective of this study is to analyze the representation of feminism through the dialogue and characterization of the mother figure in the novel Ayah by Andrea Hirata. The theory used in this study is Simone Beauvoir’s Existentialist Feminism. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of the study indicate that, through the author’s portrayal, the mother character has achieved her freedom through the three steps outlined by Simone Beauvoir: Mainstreaming, Empowerment, and Equality. This study describes feminism, which addresses gender equality between women and men, as demonstrated through the mother character in the author’s representation. This indicates that women are capable of achieving the freedom they desire through the three stages one must undergo to attain freedom: voicing freedom, living independently, and achieving equality with men in societal life. The mother character successfully navigates all these stages, demonstrating that women are shaped by their environment and are capable of transforming social structures.

Abstract

The characterization of the main character is an important element in literary works because it represents personality dynamics that develop through conflicts and life experiences. This study aims to analyze the character of Arakian as the main character in Maria Matildis Banda’s novel Suara Samudra based on Sigmund Freud’s theory of personality structure. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a psychoanalytic approach focusing on three elements of personality: the id, ego, and superego. The findings show that the ego is the most dominant element of Arakian’s personality. This ego dominance indicates that Arakian is rational, logical, and thoughtful in confronting various conflicts and realities of life. Arakian is also portrayed as a strong and resilient individual with a high degree of self-control and the ability to adapt to harsh realities of life. This study concludes that ego dominance plays an important role in shaping Arakian’s ability to control his internal impulses and adjust his actions to the realities he faces. These findings contribute to the development of literary psychology studies, particularly in understanding character formation from the perspective of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis.

Abstract

Although metaphors are widely used in Ricardus Asbanu’s poetry collection Sindikat Lara to represent various life experiences through figurative language, their forms and meanings have not been extensively examined based on George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. This study aims to describe the forms and meanings of the metaphors contained in the poetry collection. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, with the book Sindikat Lara serving as the data source, while the research data consisted of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences containing metaphors. The data were collected through library research, reading, and note-taking techniques and were subsequently analyzed by identifying and classifying them based on Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. The findings from the analysis of five poems, namely Catatan Kaki, Jum’at Agung, Obrolan Air Mata, Ikhlas di Titik Terakhir, and Rindu Paling Sakral, reveal three types of conceptual metaphors: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors. These three types of metaphors are interrelated in constructing the meanings of the poems by representing emotional experiences, social relationships, and spiritual reflections, as well as concretizing various abstract concepts, such as pain, longing, love, hope, and sadness. This study concludes that metaphors play an important role in constructing meaning, strengthening emotional expression, and reflecting the poet’s life experiences. These findings contribute to the development of literary studies and cognitive linguistics, enrich the teaching of poetry appreciation, and serve as a reference for further research on metaphors using different objects and approaches.

Abstract

Although Hikayat Lehamik (The Giant Man of Rote) features a distinctive plot, characterization, and local cultural symbols that represent the worldview of the Rote community, academic studies revealing the narrative structure of this folktale through a narratological approach remain limited. This study aims to describe the narrative structure of Hikayat Lehamik based on Seymour Chatman’s narratological theory. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using textual analysis of the folktale, which was sourced from an online text adapted by Gyanto. The data were collected through critical reading and note-taking using coding cards and were then classified based on sequences, kernels, satellites, characters, settings, and the relationship between story and discourse. The findings show that the narrative structure of Hikayat Lehamik is organized linearly through a chronological forward-moving plot and clear causal relationships. The story consists of six sequences, three kernels, and three satellites that mutually support the development of the conflict through to its resolution. Lehamik is portrayed as an innocent main character, the community functions as a collective character driven by fear, while Lehamik’s wife serves as the catalyst for the development of the conflict. The spatial, temporal, and social settings reinforce the meaning of the story while representing the culture of the Rote community. This study concludes that the elements of events and existents form a coherent narrative structure and convey a message concerning the consequences of fear, prejudice, and collective decisions that are not grounded in justice. The findings of this study contribute to the development of oral literature studies, support the teaching of regional literature, and strengthen efforts to preserve folktales as part of the cultural heritage of the Rote community.
