Abstract

Ki Hadjar Dewantara through Taman Siswa has inherited the embryo of an education system based on local Indonesian culture. Teaching in Taman Siswa is based on two main principles, namely among and pamong. The principle of among places students as the main target and priority that must be "served". Meanwhile, pamong emphasizes the teacher's task to provide facilities, motivation, inspiration and conditions for students to learn according to their desires and abilities to learn individually or student learning independence. His thoughts on education for the Indonesian nation, one of which is the foundation for releasing colonialism from the Netherlands. The method used by the author in this article is the historical research method. The historical method used in this article consists of four stages, namely heuristic, verification, interpretation. The application of education for Indonesian citizens in general, without classifying the economic and racial capabilities of citizens at that time, contributed greatly to the Indonesian nation in advancing education and national thinking.

Abstract

This study examines cultural heritage buildings in Garut Regency as architectural historical traces that reflect the social and cultural dynamics of the community since the colonial era. Through a qualitative-descriptive approach and architectural typology analysis, this study explores the form, function, and historical value of historic buildings such as the Pendopo Building, the Old Post Office, and the Papandayan Hotel. The results show that these buildings exhibit a blend of Dutch colonial architectural styles—such as Indische Empire and Art Deco—with adaptations to the tropical climate and Sundanese culture. The building typology is not only a visual representation of the colonial period, but also a symbol of the interaction between power, local communities, and urban space. Conservation efforts still face challenges, particularly from the lack of public awareness and the pressures of modern development. However, revitalization and adaptive reuse initiatives have emerged that open opportunities for the development of heritage-based tourism. This study emphasizes that historic architecture in Garut is not merely an artifact of the past, but a living heritage that needs to be preserved as a cultural identity and a medium for historical learning for future generations.
