Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explain the concept of peaceful da’wah in the thought of Nusantara scholars and assess its relevance to the current social conditions of Indonesian society. This research employs a literature-based method by examining classical and contemporary scholarly works, historical texts, da’wah manuscripts, and recent studies. The findings reveal that Nusantara scholars placed peaceful da’wah as a central approach through dialogue, exemplary conduct, and cultural adaptation. These principles remain relevant in addressing today’s social dynamics, particularly in strengthening tolerance, preventing conflict, and fostering harmonious social relations. The study concludes that the values of peaceful da’wah provide an essential foundation for responding to the complexities of Indonesia’s plural society

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Azyumardi Azra’s thoughts on Islamic identity in the context of globalization. It employs a qualitative method using the Islamic thought approach through literature review and thematic analysis. Azra views globalization as both a challenge and an opportunity for Muslims, especially in Indonesia, to develop a religious identity that is adaptive to contemporary changes. Through the concept of Islam Nusantara, Azra emphasizes the indigenization of Islam by integrating religious values with local cultural traditions, resulting in a moderate, inclusive, and tolerant form of Islam. Muslim identity in Indonesia is shaped by the dynamic interaction between Islamic teachings and the country’s socio-cultural realities. This study also connects Azra’s ideas with the perspectives of other thinkers such as Clifford Geertz, Robert W. Hefner, and Nurcholis Madjid to enrich the understanding of contextual Muslim identity. The findings affirm that Islamic identity is dynamic and continues to evolve through dialogue between religious tradition and the demands of a globalized world.

Abstract

Kata kunci: dakwah digital, media sosial, generasi Z, karakter religius, viralitas Abstract The advancement of information technology has driven the transformation of Islamic da'wah from conventional media to digital social media platforms. With 139 million social media users in Indonesia in 2024, digital da'wah offers extensive reach, rapid message dissemination, and high accessibility, particularly for Generation Z. However, the algorithmic logic of social media, oriented toward virality and user engagement, promotes the simplification of religious messages, the emergence of instant religious culture, and the phenomenon of religious FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), which prioritizes appearances over genuine practice. This study aims to analyze the transformation of digital da'wah and its driving factors, while identifying the challenges it faces in forming the religious character of Generation Z. A systematic literature review method was employed, utilizing qualitative content analysis and narrative synthesis of 35 selected literary sources. The findings indicate that digital da'wah tends to influence only the cognitive dimension without producing meaningful changes in attitudes and behavior, as genuine character formation requires role modeling, habituation, consistency, and a supportive community for sustained value internalization. For digital da'wah to be truly transformative, several strategic approaches are needed: prioritizing substance over sensation, adopting a contextual approach, integrating education with exemplary conduct, strengthening religious digital literacy, and fostering collaboration among scholars, academics, and digital content creators. The success of digital da'wah should not be measured by virality metrics, but rather by the extent to which it shapes authentic Islamic character in the real lives of its audience. Keywords: digital da'wah, social media, Generation Z, religious character, virality

Abstract

The advancement of social media in the digital era has had a profound influence on how the younger generation understands Islamic teachings. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are no longer used solely for entertainment and communication, but have also become primary sources of religious information. Social media algorithms operate by tailoring content based on user activity and interests, thereby shaping repetitive and personalized patterns of religious information consumption. This exposes the younger generation more readily to a wide range of Islamic interpretations, from moderate to conservative and even extremist perspectives. At the same time, the role of religious authority has undergone a significant shift, moving away from traditional scholars and educational institutions toward digital influencers and Islamic content creators who deliver religious material in a concise, engaging, and accessible manner. Although social media offers greater accessibility to Islamic preaching and knowledge, the overly rapid and simplified presentation of religious information may lead to a superficial understanding that lacks depth and contextual grounding. Furthermore, the emergence of filter bubble and echo chamber phenomena causes users to predominantly consume information that aligns with their pre-existing views. Therefore, enhancing both digital literacy and religious literacy is essential so that the younger generation is able to engage with information critically and selectively, and is not easily swayed by hoaxes or extremist narratives on social media. When utilized appropriately, social media can serve as a positive, inclusive, and contextually relevant medium for Islamic outreach and education.
