Abstract

Surface water is a potential water source for public to be processed into clean water. Coagulation-Flocculation is an important process in drinking water treatment because it has major influence on the purification process and quality of produced water. The objective of the study is to assess the efficiency of coagulation-flocculation processes in compartments which is arranged in series of flocculators tank, a sedimentation tank, and water production tank. A prototype of water treatment plant with capacity of 30 l/min was used in the experiment. The results showed that the composition of the six series compartments flocculator was able to give better efficiency of coagulationflocculation process. Process of species forming and destabilization of colloidal particles occured in compartmentK0 and K1. Flocculation process started in compartment K2. Raw water turbidity was in the range of 18 NTU, gradually decreased to 6 NTU with 66.67% efficiency rate. Water turbidity decreased during the sedimentation and filtration processes. Result in final processing was almost 0 NTU with the level of efficiency close to 100% and the pH value of the clean water was 7.3.

Abstract

The unsolved problem in Riau Province was the availability of clean water, since the province is dominated with peat land. Around Giam Siak Kecil Bukit biosphere reserve area are several potential sources of surface water that can be used as source of raw water. The aim of this study was to assess the peat water quality out of selected sites within Tanjung Leban area using STORET method in order to find out its quality classification and to try to improve its quality using a jar test lab scale. Based on the preassessment over four locations, Air Raja River was selected for it had several characteristics such as the water color was reddish and homogenous, had no sediment, had relatively constant water flow throughout the year, and was located on the edge of the road. Yet there were people's daily activities at the body of the river i.e. bathing, washing, and toileting. Based on its physical quality, the peat water had color levels ranging from 462 to 503 TCU, stench, and sour taste. The non-metallic chemical test of the peat water resulted in showing that it had pH 3.52. The peat water also contained Coliform bacteria and E. coli as many as 70 and 630 col/100ml, respectively. After going through STORET method analysis, the total score was -26, which means it had C status the quality of pollutans of which was light. After several physical and chemical quality improvement efforts using jar test, water quality could be improved up to A class (zero score).

Abstract

Peat swamp forest is a unique and fragile ecosystem, with specific flora and fauna that play important roles in maintaining healthy natural conditions with high economic values. This habitat also has important role for equilibrium and maintenance of living environment such as water reservoir, carbon storage, climate change, and biodiversity. Utilization of peatland for agriculture, plantations, and other activities often lead not only to controversy, but also cause land and ecosystem degradation, including water resources availability. The objective of this research was to study comprehensive ecohydrology aspects in ex-mega rice project in Central Kalimantan in order to support sustainable agricultural practices and water resources management in peatland areas. The results of the study showed that the sustainability of agricultural systems in peatland was strongly influenced by ecological aspect. This aspect can be carried out from the condition of water management system, water color condition, and possible incidence of fires. The level of suitability for crops plantation was low (S3), with the limiting factors of pH, nutrient availability, and the risk of inundation. In this case, water gates should be installed to improve water management system. Water quality in this area was typical of peat water and do not meet the requirement for daily use for the local people.

Abstract

Surface water, including rivers, lakes or ponds, in peatland areas has specific characteristics. Generally, this type of water has high level of acidity, organic matter, and high concentration in several metalic ions, like manganese and iron. The content of organic matter is usually indicated by dark brown color of water. In term of quality, this water is not suitable to be used directly for covering daily needs, such as drinking, cooking, and bathing by the local people. IPAG60 was proven as a small scale plant which has a good ability for treating different types of peat water to produce clean water as per the standards. This plant gives alternative technology to support clean water services in peatland areas.
