Abstract

This community service activity aims to develop a culture-based educational tourism program at Taokwan Qing Ping Gong Temple as a medium for introducing Chinese culture to the public. This activity is a follow-up to research conducted by students of the Mandarin Language and Chinese Culture Study Program, which analyzed the symbolic meanings of architectural elements, ornaments, and ritual practices at Qing Ping Gong Temple. The method used in this activity was descriptive qualitative with a community service approach. The results show that the educational tourism program was able to improve participants’ understanding of Chinese cultural values, particularly those related to symbolism, philosophy, and ritual practices found at Taokwan Qing Ping Gong. In addition, this activity provided students with contextual learning experiences through an experiential learning approach. This program has the potential to become an innovative culture-based learning model through direct visits, while also strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions and the community in preserving local culture, particularly temples in Makassar City.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and frequency of word order errors in Mandarin sentences made by beginner learners. The data were obtained from written tests completed by 17 first-year students of the Mandarin Language Education Study Program at the State University of Makassar. The test consisted of 10 questions in two formats: (1) arranging scrambled words into grammatically correct sentences, and (2) translating Indonesian sentences into Mandarin. The results indicate that word order errors primarily occurred in five aspects, namely: (1) the placement of temporal adverbs, frequency adverbs, and interrogative words; (2) the position of resultative/aspectual complements; (3) the order of serial verbs; (4) the use of degree adverbs; and (5) the structure of numerals with classifiers. These errors were attributed to interference from the more flexible word order of the Indonesian language, as well as the students' insufficient understanding of Mandarin syntactic rules. These findings highlight the need for a systematic emphasis on learning sentence structures. The implications of this research are expected to serve as a foundation for formulating more effective teaching strategies for Mandarin sentence patterns for beginner learners.

Abstract

Mandarin language learning is still largely dominated by the use of imported textbooks oriented toward Chinese culture. This condition often causes difficulties for students in understanding reading materials due to differences in cultural background from their daily lives. This article aims to analyze the importance of cultural relevance in Mandarin reading instruction for Indonesian high school students. Based on the results of a study involving 155 high school students, it was found that 64% of students found it easier to understand Mandarin reading texts that incorporated Indonesian culture compared to texts focused on Chinese culture. In addition, around 58% of students admitted that they were less interested in reading materials discussing foreign cultures that were far removed from their experiences, such as winter festivals and traditional Chinese family traditions. These findings indicate that cultural relevance in learning materials has a significant influence on students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation in Mandarin language learning. Therefore, the integration of Indonesian local culture into Mandarin learning materials is considered important in creating learning that is more contextual, meaningful, and aligned with the characteristics of Indonesian students.
