Abstract

Urban Heat Island (UHI) is a phenomenon of increasing temperature in urban areas influenced by reduced vegetation and increasing surface temperature. This study aims to analyze vegetation distribution, land surface temperature, and UHI intensity in Sirimau District using Landsat imagery from 2019 and 2022. The analysis was conducted using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Land Surface Temperature (LST), and Urban Heat Island (UHI) parameters. The results showed that NDVI values in 2019 ranged from −0.0127 to 0.8531, while in 2022 they ranged from −0.017 to 0.8309. Low NDVI values were generally found in the urban center, whereas high NDVI values were identified in areas with dense vegetation. LST values in 2019 ranged from 18.524 °C to 28.546 °C, while in 2022 they ranged from 15.359 °C to 25.382 °C. Higher surface temperatures were concentrated in urban and settlement areas, while lower temperatures were found in vegetated areas. UHI values in 2019 ranged from −1.946 °C to 2.555 °C, while in 2022 they ranged from −2.489 °C to 2.942 °C. The study indicates an inverse relationship between NDVI, LST, and UHI, where areas with low vegetation density tend to have higher surface temperatures and stronger UHI intensity compared to vegetated areas. These findings highlight the important role of vegetation in reducing surface temperature and mitigating UHI effects. The results of this study are expected to support sustainable urban planning, the development of green open spaces, and climate adaptation strategies in Sirimau District.

Abstract

With the advancement of technology in the earth sciences, the identification, investigation, and interpretation of subsurface conditions to identify natural resources beneath the surface has become easier. Geophysical technology is a powerful method to support this process. Using currently popular geophysical methods, this is not difficult to accomplish. The geomagnetic method, in particular, is a well-established geophysical method in the exploration world. This method is highly sensitive to vertical changes in the subsurface, making it highly suitable for application, particularly in geophysical fieldwork, to identify hot springs. It is hoped that students, the community service team, the community, and the Tulehu regional government will experience the positive impact of this program. As is known, the Tulehu region boasts abundant natural resources, yet they remain largely unexplored. Therefore, through the implementation of geophysical fieldwork as a community service activity, these manifestations can be properly investigated. In fact, with the application of geophysical applications, hot springs have been identified at several locations. This location has become iconic in education (geological-geophysical studies) and for tourism (geotourism) as a learning reference. In the future, the community service team hopes to continue developing other activities and innovations using a geophysical approach so that they can have a positive impact on various general audiences.

Abstract

State Senior High School 7 Saparua in Central Maluku Regency is one of the schools located in an island region with potential vulnerability to earthquakes and tsunamis. This condition makes it important to develop students' knowledge and preparedness for disasters from an early age. This community service activity aims to provide education and understanding about earthquakes, tsunamis, and their mitigation to students. The method of implementation was carried out through material delivery, interactive discussions, and question and answer sessions related to earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as mitigation steps before, during, and after a disaster. The results of the activity showed that students showed high enthusiasm throughout the activity. This was evident in their active involvement in the discussion and various questions asked regarding the timing of mitigation implementation, appropriate mitigation strategies, and other factors that can trigger a tsunami. This activity provided students with an understanding of the importance of disaster preparedness. Through this activity, it is hoped that students of State Senior High School 7 Saparua will be able to increase awareness of disaster risks and disseminate this knowledge within the school and community.
