Abstract

Abstract

Extractive distillation is a specialized distillation process that involves adding an additional component (extractive agent or solvent/entrainer) to the mixture in order to alter the relative volatilities of the components and enable their separation, even when they form azeotropes. This technique is commonly used to separate azeotropic mixtures, such as ethanol-water azeotropes. The ethanol-water azeotrope is a well-known example, where the mixture contains around 95.6 wt% ethanol and 4.4 wt% water. Traditional distillation methods cannot separate these components efficiently due to the azeotropic behavior. However, extractive distillation offers a solution by introducing a third component (entrainer) that forms a ternary azeotrope, which has different properties compared to the binary azeotrope (ethanol-water). This study presents the effect of the operating parameters (e.g., column configuration, pressure, entrainer type) on energy consumption while the purity of ethanol is set to 99.5 wt%. Appropriate entrainers (i.e., glycerol, ethylene glycol) are chosen to extract water from methanol at different compositions. The optimum design of ethanol-water azeotrope separation is obtained by using sensitivity analysis in Aspen Plus simulation. The results indicate the trade-off between solvent and reboiler duty consumption. An advanced comparison study is recommended, including the mixing of both solvents as entrainer.

Abstract

Urban Heat Island (UHI) is a phenomenon of increasing temperature in urban areas influenced by reduced vegetation and increasing surface temperature. This study aims to analyze vegetation distribution, land surface temperature, and UHI intensity in Sirimau District using Landsat imagery from 2019 and 2022. The analysis was conducted using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Land Surface Temperature (LST), and Urban Heat Island (UHI) parameters. The results showed that NDVI values in 2019 ranged from −0.0127 to 0.8531, while in 2022 they ranged from −0.017 to 0.8309. Low NDVI values were generally found in the urban center, whereas high NDVI values were identified in areas with dense vegetation. LST values in 2019 ranged from 18.524 °C to 28.546 °C, while in 2022 they ranged from 15.359 °C to 25.382 °C. Higher surface temperatures were concentrated in urban and settlement areas, while lower temperatures were found in vegetated areas. UHI values in 2019 ranged from −1.946 °C to 2.555 °C, while in 2022 they ranged from −2.489 °C to 2.942 °C. The study indicates an inverse relationship between NDVI, LST, and UHI, where areas with low vegetation density tend to have higher surface temperatures and stronger UHI intensity compared to vegetated areas. These findings highlight the important role of vegetation in reducing surface temperature and mitigating UHI effects. The results of this study are expected to support sustainable urban planning, the development of green open spaces, and climate adaptation strategies in Sirimau District.

Abstract

A community service initiative was conducted in Assilulu Village, Central Maluku Regency, aimed at assessing the quality of groundwater used by the local community through physical and chemical parameter testing. Residents rely on groundwater from dug wells and springs as their primary sources for drinking and sanitation, often without knowledge of its quality or safety. Key challenges include potential contamination from seawater intrusion and domestic activities, alongside low public awareness regarding the importance of periodic water quality testing. Consequently, a targeted program involving active partner participation was implemented, comprising public outreach, water sampling, groundwater level (GWL) analysis, laboratory testing, and training on the use of simple water quality testing tools. Physical parameters analyzed included temperature, odor, and total dissolved solids (TDS), while chemical parameters included pH, salinity, CN, PO₄³⁻, SO₄²⁻, K⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Cl⁻, and Mn. Test results were evaluated against drinking water quality standards set by the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2023. The study revealed that most groundwater sources in Assilulu Village met drinking water quality standards; however, elevated levels of TDS, Na⁺, and Cl⁻ were observed at Location 1, Location 5, and an old well, indicating seawater intrusion. The initiative resulted in increased community knowledge regarding clean water management and the availability of physical and chemical data; furthermore, partners gained proficiency in using portable water testing equipment, enabling them to continuously monitor the quality of the water they use.
