Abstract

Artificial insemination (AI) is an important technology in increasing the population and productivity of Murrah buffalo in Indonesia, however its success is also influenced by the quality of the semen during storage. The addition of virgin coconut oil (VCO) as a natural antioxidant in Tris-egg yolk extender has the potential to increase the stability of spermatozoa cells against oxidative stress. This study aims to evaluate the effect of VCO on the quality of Murrah buffalo liquid semen during 0, 24, and 48 hours storage at 3–5 °C. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments (T0: control without VCO, T1: 8% VCO, T2: 10% VCO, T3: 12% VCO, and T4: 14% VCO) and four replicates. The results of the study showed that the addition of VCO at a dose of 8% (T1) had a positive effect on maintaining semen quality for up to 48 hours. The highest motility was recorded at T1 (57.00±1.54%) which was significantly different (P<0.05) with other treatments. T1 treatment (55.37±4.16) (P<0.05) significantly improved sperm viability at 24 to 48 hours. T2 (5.17±1.29) and T1 (4.80±0.71) treatments significantly improved sperm viability at 24 hours of storage, while T1 (6.24±0.88) was more effective in maintaining viability for up to 48 hours. Similarly, intact plasma membranes were maintained at T0 (41.75±0.68) and T1 (40.79±2.02) with significant differences (P<0.05) with other treatments at 48-hour storage. Overall, the addition of VCO in optimal concentrations was able to slow down the degradation of semen quality during storage in Murrah buffalo, demonstrating its potential as an effective and environmentally friendly natural additive antioxidant in sustainable Murrah buffalo liquid semen extender

Abstract

Abstract

The Taman Seribu Bunga Agrotourism is a tourist destination known as the beautiful flower beds. The right selection of fertilizer is considered important in the sustainability of agrotourism. The continuous use of chemical fertilizers can cause a decrease in soil health and fertility, which has an impact on plant productivity. In addition, Taman Seribu Bunga Agrotourism is surrounded by farmers who have problems in processing their livestock waste. Therefore, this community service activity carried out is to provide training in bokashi composting as an organic fertilizer that can be used by flower farmers in the Taman Seribu Bunga Agrotourism and its surroundings. The method used is a group discussion forum (FGD), interview, observation, and training using learning media such as brochures, and provide tools and supporting materials for bokashi composting. The results of this study is 6 out of 7 farmers expressed sthat they very satisfied with the bokashi composting training held at Taman Seribu Bunga Agrotourism, highlighting its relevance for managing livestock waste and supporting organic fertilizer needs in local flower and horticultural farming. All 7 farmers also showed interest in applying the knowledge by converting their own farm waste into bokashi. Based on the results of the activity, it can be concluded that the activity can overcome problems related to the accumulation of livestock manure that has not been managed properly.

Abstract

Agricultural waste and livestock manure that are not properly utilized can cause environmental pollution. This community service aims to reduce environmental pollution through the treatment of agricultural waste and fermented manure to be used as maggot growth media at Arjuna Farm. Maggots are a source of animal protein with good nutritional value, containing 45-50% crude protein. The production of maggots from livestock and agricultural waste can serve as a source of nutrition for livestock. The community service methods include fermenting agricultural waste and manure to create maggot growth media, maggot cultivation training, and the production of dry maggot products that can be used as a source of animal protein feed for poultry. This program also contributes to increasing the income of Arjuna Farm through the produced dry maggot products. It is hoped that through this community service, farmers can access appropriate technology for processing fecal and agricultural waste using fermentation technology to produce a good growth medium for maggots. The results of this service have an impact on environmental preservation and reducing the negative effects of agricultural and fecal waste, as well as contributing to improving their economic welfare. The observation percentages after evaluation at Arjuna Farm were not significantly different from the expected results, with an average of 74% out of 92% in terms of waste processing and farmers' income.
