Abstract

Learning interest is one of the factors that greatly influences students’ success in understanding the subject matter. In high school chemistry learning, learning interest plays an important role because chemistry requires conceptual understanding, analysis, and application in everyday life. However, in reality, students’ learning interest often differs between male and female students. Gender is assumed to be one of the factors influencing these differences, whether in terms of participation, or tendencies in the learning process.  This study aims to determine the level of learning interest of male and female students in chemistry subjects. This research employed a quantitative descriptive design with the population consisting of senior high school students in the PPU region, using the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The sample was determined using the Slovin formula with a margin of error of 10%, resulting in a total of 113 students, consisting of 47 male students and 66 female students. Data were collected using a non-test technique in the form of a learning interest questionnaire. The final results showed that the percentage of learning interest among male students was 72%, indicating that most male students had a high level of learning interest in chemistry. Meanwhile, female students achieved a percentage of 82%, which indicates that almost all female students had a very high level of learning interest in chemistry.

Abstract

Science process skills (SPS) are essential competencies in chemistry learning that support development of scientific thinking and evidence-based problem solving. This study aimed to analyze differences in students' SPS based on gender in chemistry learning at a public senior high schools in Samarinda. The study used a retrospective comparative quantitative approach. The SPS data were collected by using documentation technique involving 65 SPS of eleventh grade students (31 males and 34 females) who programmed chemistry subject. SPS data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the Mann-Whitney U test (α = 0.05). The results showed that there was no significant difference in overall SPS between male and female students (p = 0.333) and in most indicators (p > 0.05), except for the observation indicator (p = 0.004), with female students having a slightly higher descriptive mean. These findings confirm that mastery of SPS is more influenced by the quality of the learning process than by gender factors, thus contributing empirically to the application of inclusive science learning oriented towards scientific activities.

Abstract

Banana peel waste is one of the organic materials that has high potential to be processed into liquid fertilizer because it contains macronutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). This study aims to examine the effect of banana peel ripeness on the quality of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) produced and its effect on the growth of cayenne pepper plants (Capsicum frutescens L.). POC is made through fermentation of ripe and unripe banana peels with the addition of granulated sugar or EM4 for more than seven days. The parameters observed include plant height, number of leaves, and pH of the fertilizer solution. The results showed that the treatment of ripe banana peels with added sugar (P1) gave the best results, with plant height growth reaching 5.2 cm and the number of leaves as many as 5 strands on the 25th day. The increase in fertilizer pH from week 1 to 5 indicated the success of fermentation and transformation of organic compounds into inorganic ionic forms such as NO₃⁻, H₂PO₄⁻, and K⁺ which are easily absorbed by plants. This research proves that the principles of inorganic chemistry can be applied practically in the management of organic waste into effective and environmentally friendly liquid fertilizer.
