Abstract

The productivity of home-based blue swimming crab pickers is an important factor in the sustainability of the export-oriented home-based crab industry.  This research aims to analyse the factors that influence the productivity of home-based crab pickers in Cirebon Regency.  Specifically, this research aims to analyze: (1) the influence of individual characteristics on work motivation; (2) the influence of the work environment on work motivation; (3) the influence of work motivation on sanitation-hygiene practices; (4) the influence of work motivation on productivity; and (5) the influence of sanitation-hygiene practices on the productivity of home-based crab pickers.  The research was conducted with 40 home-based crab pickers in Cirebon Regency, using a quantitative approach and the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method.  The results showed that individual characteristics had a positive and significant effect on work motivation (β = 0.508; p < 0.05), whereas the work environment had a weaker but significant effect (β = 0.368; p < 0.05). Work motivation has a positive and significant effect on sanitation-hygiene practices (β = 0.621; p < 0.05) and a direct and significant effect on productivity (β = 0.416; p < 0.05). In addition, sanitation and hygiene practices are proven to have a positive and significant effect on productivity (β = 0.491; p < 0.05). The high coefficient of determination (R²) indicates that the model has strong predictive ability for explaining home-based crab pickers' productivity. This finding emphasises the importance of strengthening individual aspects and implementing sanitation and hygiene as strategies to increase productivity in household-scale crab processing units.
