Abstract

Vocabulary skills are a key indicator of language development in early childhood, supporting communication skills and readiness for learning. Based on initial observations at the Permata Hati Pejawaran Playgroup (KB), the children’s vocabulary skills remain low, as evidenced by their limited ability to name letters, distinguish similar letters, and match letters with pictures. Therefore, efforts to improve these skills are needed through the use of letter-based picture books that can provide effective and engaging visual and verbal stimulation. This study aims to improve children’s vocabulary. It employs a Classroom Action Research approach conducted over two cycles, each consisting of three sessions involving 13 children aged 3–4 years (7 boys and 6 girls). Data collection techniques included observation and documentation. The results showed an improvement in the children’s vocabulary: prior to the intervention, 36% fell into the “not yet developed” (BB) category; in Cycle I, the average score of 51% placed them in the “beginning to develop” (MB) category; and in Cycle II, the average score of 85% placed them in the “very well developed” (BSB) category. With the success criteria of over 75% met in Cycle II, this study was deemed successful. Therefore, it can be concluded that the letter-based visual aids are effective in improving the vocabulary of 3- to 4-year-old children at the Permata Hati Pejawaran.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to empower communities through ecobrick-based environmental literacy as an innovative approach to plastic waste management. The program was implemented using a participatory approach, with several stages: observation, problem identification, socialization, training, and continuous mentoring to encourage active community participation. The activities focused on increasing public awareness of environmental issues and on promoting practical solutions to reduce plastic waste through ecobrick production. The results showed that community members, especially women's groups and youth organizations, were able to transform plastic waste into ecobricks that were further utilized as functional products, such as plant pots and simple waste bins. In addition, the program successfully improved community understanding of environmental cleanliness, waste reduction, and the importance of sustainable environmental practices. The implications of this program suggest that ecobrick-based environmental literacy can be an effective strategy for strengthening community participation, encouraging environmentally responsible behavior, and supporting sustainable plastic waste management at the local level. Furthermore, the program fostered long-term environmental awareness and collective responsibility within the community.
