Abstract

In post-9/11 fiction, trauma is often represented not merely as a psychological condition but as a narrative disruption that fragments the protagonist's sense of self. This article examines the representation of the divided self in Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close through the lens of R.D. Laing’s theory of the Divided Self. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to examine how self-fragmentation and the construction of a false-self system dramatize the protagonist’s inner conflict. The findings indicate that narrative elements, such as rigid communication patterns and the deployment of humor, function as a false-self system that serves as a defense mechanism against ontological insecurity. This study argues that the tragedy of 9/11 triggered a sharp separation between the inner self and the false self. Ultimately, the trauma in this novel manifests as a catalyst for a divided self that alienates inner feelings from their social representation, thereby trapping the protagonist in self-isolation.

Abstract

This article examines how a second-generation daughter character takes a psychological path toward healing the historical trauma she inherited and the severe sense of emotional detachment in a fragmented household. Even though the tragic past of the maternal figure is usually the center of the literature analysis, this work will attempt to alter the interpretive lens toward the dynamics of a daughter overcoming her psychological paralysis. Applying a qualitative literary-critical design, the proposed study will employ a dual-theoretical model of attachment theory and trauma theory to examine the latent narrative nuances. It was done through systematic close reading of particular narrative units, which collected the data based on aspects of spatial symbolism, internal monologues, and the dynamics between characters. The findings reveal two main mechanisms in the character’s storyline. First, her excessive domestic seclusion and psychosomatic withdrawal, namely, two years of deafness and a physical retreat into a secluded natural setting, are diagnosed as the direct result of a broken maternal attachment and deep, insecure attachment. The haunted-house setting is essentially unhelpful as a secure base; it is an inhospitable refuge that reinforces her isolation. Second, the daughter character's definitive recovery is achieved not through internal resilience alone but through an active process of social reconnection. She establishes reparative interpersonal relationships with substitute maternal figures by breaking the spatial boundaries of her isolation and ultimately mobilizing a collective intervention, which allows her to overcome her psychological barriers. The study concludes that resolving intergenerational trauma requires rebuilding social connections to deliberately break entrenched insecure attachment patterns. These findings contribute to Morrison scholarship by demonstrating Denver's agency and offering a replicable dual-theory framework for analyzing trauma recovery in literary texts.

Abstract

This study explores the role of friendship in shaping the psychological development of the main character in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series through the lens of Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory. The research aims to examine how Percy’s relationships, particularly with the main character’s friends, contribute to identity formation and emotional growth. This study adopts a qualitative and thematic textual analysis approach, guided by Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. The data collection involved close reading and repeated viewing of key episodes. By applying Lacan’s key concepts, including the Mirror Stage, desire, lack (manque), and the triadic orders of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real, this study analyzes how the series portrays friendship as a vital medium through which the main character navigates his sense of self and subjectivity. The findings suggest that friendship functions not only as emotional support but also as a reflective structure that drives the main character’s evolving identity. The Symbolic becomes central when friendships provide moral language and social recognition, especially through Annabeth’s and Grover’s dialogue. Moreover, the study reveals that the series subverts conventional heroic narratives by emphasizing psychological depth and emotional dependency, positioning friendship as central to the hero’s journey. This analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of how contemporary screen adaptations can integrate psychoanalytic dimensions into character development.

Abstract

Persona is one of Jung's archetypes, representing the mask or our other personality we make when we appear in front of people. The existence of personas is added to many forms of literature nowadays, especially in the character, which makes the story more complicated and enjoyable for the reader. Personas are given deep characteristics about the character's traits and psychological development. The novel "Shameful Life," also known as "No Longer Human," was written by Dazai Osamu and tells the life story of a man who lives as a clown to conceal his true nature from society. However, the clown persona that he is proud of and wears in his life becomes his prison for eternity. The qualitative research will be the main foundation of the paper’s method, which will be filled with a combination of data processing and theory. The method has succeeded in giving a detailed description of the Clown person and its cause and effect. The clown persona is a persona that is possessed and created by the main character using the reference of a clown. The main character believes that, if he could always use a clown persona and entertain people, he would be accepted by the human society, but those beliefs will be crushed by his own persona.

Abstract

Family plays a critical role in shaping a child’s psychological development. An ideal family consists of each member fulfilling their assigned role. The absence of stability and love that a family offers can lead to long-term effects on children, especially if it happens to an infant. Joan G. Robinson’s When Marnie Was there explores the psychological struggles around children who experience separation from their primary caregiver and their inability to receive a secure environment. Therefore, this study aims to do an in-depth analysis on psychological problems of the main character who experience abandonment issue and what factors cause her to experience abandonment issue. This study uses qualitative methods by applying John Bowlby’s attachment theory and Carl Jung’s psychoanalytic theory, especially about insecure attachment. The novel shows how the abandonment issue was described and what factors cause it through the main character of the novel. The separation and instability that the main character experiences in her early childhood shapes how the main character perceives the world. It reflects Bowlby's attachment theory that psychological development of a person is shaped by what they experience in their infant phase, even if they can’t remember what happened and also represents Jung’s archetypes.

Abstract

Human needs are essential for mental well-being and determining the direction in life. Failure to meet these needs may result in individuals experiencing emotional instability, identity confusion, and internal conflict. Sophie Kinsella's novel Confessions of a Shopaholic illustrates this dilemma through the character Rebecca Bloomwood, whose compulsive purchasing transcends mere lifestyle; it signifies deeper mental health concerns. The objective of this study is to examine the psychological challenges encountered by the main character and how her behavior is influenced by unfulfilled needs, particularly those pertaining to self-esteem and belongingness. This research employs a qualitative methodology grounded in psychological literacy critique and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. An in-depth examination and textual analysis of the argument reveals that Rebecca Bloomwood undergoes two significant psychological phases: the emotional turmoil phase, characterized by unmet wants, and the nascent self-awareness phase, during which she tries to take charge of her life again. The character’s journey shows that psychological needs must be met from the inside, not the outside. Rebecca’s story shows how hard it is to live in a culture where appearances and social standing can change who you are.

Abstract

The natural potential of Karakan Village, Weru District, Sukoharjo Regency is diverse, but it still lacks consideration for environmental sustainability, resulting in low community awareness of environmental issues. Additionally, the underutilization of natural resources has left the community unable to fully harness the available natural potential. To address these challenges, students college from GIAT 9 UNNES conducted an ecoprint training using the pounding method for the Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Karakan Village. This training aimed to raise environmental awareness and provide new skills that could enhance the community's economic value. Through the pounding method, training participants were taught to create ecoprint products that are highly aesthetic and environmentally friendly. The training results showed an improvement in the participants' skills and understanding, which is expected to contribute to environmental preservation and increase the economic welfare of the Karakan Village community. This training is also in line with the community empowerment efforts initiated by the local government and is expected to serve as a model for other villages in developing sustainable handicraft industries.

Abstract

Family should be the safest place for everyone, where people can become their true selves and express their true feelings. On the contrary, the main character in Searching for Sylvie Lee often shows the dominance of her false self and hides her true self from her family. Therefore, this study explores how the character’s childhood environment contributes to the formation of her false self and its effect on her authentic self-expression and psychological stability. Through a qualitative descriptive method within a psychoanalytic literary criticism framework, the study analyzes narrative descriptions, dialogues, character interactions, and internal reflections in the novel using Winnicott’s concepts of the holding environment, true self, and false self. The findings reveal that the character’s prolonged separation from her biological parents, emotional rejection, conditional acceptance, and persistent feelings of displacement contribute significantly to the formation of her false self. As she grows older, this adaptive identity becomes increasingly dominant, shaping her into the person everyone needed, until nobody knows who she really is. This prolonged dominance of the false self results in loneliness, emotional isolation, difficulties in expressing vulnerability, loss of authentic selfhood, and psychological collapse. The discussion suggests that the character’s tragedy is rooted not only in external circumstances, such as migration and family conflict, but also in the ongoing suppression of her authentic self to maintain social acceptance.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of adolescent trauma through the character of Hannah Baker in Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a psychological literary analysis approach, the research applies Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory and the concept of complex trauma to investigate how environmental systems contribute to psychological deterioration. The analysis identifies five levels microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem that each fail to provide the support Hannah needs, ultimately leading to her emotional collapse. Key findings reveal that direct peer betrayal, institutional neglect, weak family-school communication, cultural normalization of victim-blaming, and cumulative unresolved trauma collectively influence the protagonist's declining mental health. The study demonstrates that trauma in adolescence is rarely the result of a single incident but rather the accumulation of systemic failures over time. The findings imply that educational institutions and communities must adopt trauma-informed frameworks and foster empathetic, interconnected support systems to protect vulnerable youth.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of structural patriarchy on personal identity formation and psychological distress in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway through the character of Septimus Warren Smith. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes narrative passages, dialogues, and character experiences using Sylvia Walby’s theory of structural patriarchy. The findings reveal that patriarchal structures operate through interconnected cultural and institutional mechanisms that regulate masculinity and suppress emotional vulnerability. Septimus internalizes dominant masculine ideals that equate strength with emotional restraint, leading him to repress grief and trauma following his wartime experiences. His psychological suffering is further intensified by medical authorities, particularly Dr. Holmes and Sir William Bradshaw, whose concepts of Proportion and Conversion function as instruments of social conformity rather than genuine care. These institutional interventions marginalize Septimus’s experiences, diminish his personal agency, and accelerate the fragmentation of his identity. Ultimately, his suicide emerges as the tragic consequence of a prolonged conflict between individual subjectivity and patriarchal power. The study concludes that Woolf critiques a social system that prioritizes conformity, productivity, and masculine ideals over empathy and psychological well-being, demonstrating how patriarchy can adversely affect both women and men.
