Abstract

The development of digitalization technology in the world of education emphasizes the need for progressive learning innovation, not only focusing on procedural memorization, but it is important to integrate geometric concepts with cultural values and STEM approaches. As for alternatives that answer these needs, the purpose of this study is to develop an Ethno-STEM based e-module that focuses on the Uma Lengge building as a geometry learning context to improve the mathematical representation abilities of junior high school students. In the development of this e-module, the ADDIE development model is used, which is Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation. In the data collection process by conducting observations, as well as using tests, andquestionnaires. The feasibility test obtained an e-module with a valid category in the material and design aspects, in addition, responses by students regarding the practicality of the module are in the practical category for use in learning, while the effectiveness test of the e-module showed an increase in students' representation abilities in the post-test results with a moderate to high increase, which indicates a significant difference from the pre-test results. So the Ethno-STEM based e-module focusing on the Uma Lengge building with the context of geometry material is effectively used to improve the mathematical representation abilities of junior high school students.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is one of the essential competencies that students must possess in solving non-routine mathematical problems, as it requires higher-order thinking skills. Metacognitive ability plays an important role in students' mathematical problem-solving processes. However, each student has different metacognitive abilities, one of which is influenced by their learning style characteristics. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach and aimed to investigate students' metacognitive abilities based on the learning styles of MTs students in solving non-routine mathematical problems. The research was conducted as a descriptive qualitative study. The research subjects were selected based on auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning style categories. Data were collected through non-routine mathematical problem-solving tests, learning style questionnaires, and interviews to reveal students' metacognitive thinking processes. Data analysis was carried out by referring to the stages of metacognition, namely Awareness, Regulation, and Evaluation. The results showed that students' metacognitive abilities differed at each metacognitive stage across the three learning styles. Visual learners demonstrated more comprehensive metacognitive abilities, while auditory and kinesthetic learners still experienced difficulties, particularly at the evaluation stage. Nevertheless, all three subjects were able to obtain correct final solutions to the problems. These findings indicate that learning styles influence the characteristics of students' metacognitive processes in solving non-routine mathematical problems.

Abstract

Ethnomathematics studies in Indonesia are still dominated by material cultural artifacts, while oral traditions such as children's songs remain largely unexplored. This study aims to examine mathematical activities in the transmission practice of the song "Lingkaran Kecil Lingkaran Besar" using an exploratory qualitative approach. The research was conducted with 8 main participants who provided exploration worksheets and interview data, 15 supporting participants, and 11 YouTube videos as comparative data. The analysis adapted Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis, which was then interpreted through Bishop's six mathematical activities. The results reveal that the song's lyrics have an initial section that is preserved, though subsequent sections vary. Representations of the song fall into three themes: pig, doll, and movement. Transmission occurs through peers, family, or the school environment. Bishop’s six mathematical activities were identified through the counting of repeated arrays and objects, the designing of structures such as a doll, a pig, and the word "babi" using the numbers 3, 4, 3, and 1. The locating of positions and changes in formation; the measuring of size, distance, tempo, and duration, the explaining of the use of the numbers 6 and 36, and the playing involving the application of game rules and group agreements. These findings emphasize that the song "Lingkaran Kecil Lingkaran Besar" has the potential to be integrated into basic mathematics education to introduce geometry, numbers, and measurement in an enjoyable way while preserving local culture.
