Abstract

Political authority is constructed not only through what leaders say but also through how interpersonal meanings are realized in discourse. While previous studies have widely examined political speeches through Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), no study has investigated how authority is enacted across different discourse contexts within the same international forum, particularly by non-Western leaders. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study investigates the enactment of authority in President Prabowo Subianto’s discourse at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025. Drawing on the interpersonal metafunction of SFL, it analyzes Mood Types, Modality, and Polarity in a speech and a panel session. Social embodiment is employed as a supporting perspective to explain how embodied resources contribute to the realization of interpersonal meanings. The findings indicate that authority in both datasets is realized primarily through Declarative–No Modality–Positive Polarity (D–ؖؖP) constructions, which present political propositions as factual, legitimate, and undeniable. Obligation, negative Polarity, and limited imperative patterns further reinforce authority through commitment, rejection, and persuasive direction. The findings also reveal contextual variation: authority in the speech is more assertive and policy-oriented, whereas authority in the panel session is more negotiated and diplomatically moderated. Embodied resources support these meanings by reinforcing certainty and commitment or by softening directive force. The study concludes that political authority is dynamically constructed through the interaction of interpersonal grammatical resources and embodied support in contemporary political discourse.

Abstract

This study investigates the realization of interpersonal metafunction in Anne Hathaway’s speech on International Women’s Day 2026 by employing the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. The analysis concentrates on the interpersonal resources embedded in the speech, particularly mood types, speech functions, subject choices, and modality, to examine how linguistic elements are utilized to establish relationships with the audience and convey persuasive messages. The findings demonstrate that declarative clauses are the most frequently occurring mood type and primarily function as statements, indicating that Hathaway’s main objective is to inform, persuade, and raise awareness about issues concerning gender equality and women’s rights. The speech also features several rhetorical questions that encourage audience reflection and emotional involvement rather than seeking direct responses. Furthermore, the recurring use of the inclusive pronoun we reflects an intentional strategy to foster solidarity, collective identity, and shared responsibility among participants. The use of modal verbs, including must, can, will, and would, further reveals the speaker’s attitudes toward obligation, possibility, commitment, and hope for future social progress. These interpersonal linguistic features enable Hathaway to strengthen her connection with the audience, enhance the persuasive impact of her message, and promote collective engagement in addressing gender-related challenges. therefore, the study highlights how interpersonal metafunction serves as an effective linguistic resource for constructing social relationships, influencing audience perspectives, and supporting advocacy for women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Abstract

This study investigates the pragmatic dimensions of political apologies in the context of public scandals, with particular emphasis on face management strategies and image restoration efforts. Drawing upon Brown, et al. (2023) politeness theory and Benoit’s (2022) image restoration theory, this study analyzes 50 political apologies delivered by politicians from five democratic countries the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, and Australia between 2013 and 2023. Data were collected from official transcripts, video recordings, and media coverage, and were examined through the lens of critical discourse analysis. The findings reveal significant variations in both linguistic and non-linguistic strategies. American politicians tend to emphasize personal responsibility and corrective actions. In the United Kingdom, apologies are more implicit, often centering on expressions of regret. French politicians frequently contextualize wrongdoing within broader socio-political discourses. In Japan, apologies typically involve profound gestures and expressions of shame. Meanwhile, Australian politicians often employ self-deprecating humor to diffuse tension. This study contributes to a cross-cultural understanding of face management in political discourse and highlights the importance of cultural intelligence in global crisis communication. The practical implications include guidelines for crafting culturally sensitive apologies to enhance the effectiveness of image restoration efforts for politicians in the aftermath of scandals.

Abstract

This study examines international students’ perceptions and experiences of social interaction and cultural adaptation in second language acquisition, particularly in learning Bahasa Indonesia. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study involved eight international students who participated in semi-structured interviews, with two participants also involved in observations. The study draws on Long’s (1996) Interaction Hypothesis to examine social interaction and Berry’s (1997) acculturation framework to understand cultural adaptation. The findings identified three themes related to social interaction: communication, negotiation of meaning, and receiving feedback. These themes illustrate how international students described their interactions with Indonesian speakers as opportunities to practice Bahasa Indonesia, clarify meaning, and receive linguistic input and feedback. Regarding cultural adaptation, the findings reflected four acculturation orientations: integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization. Rather than functioning as fixed categories, these orientations represented participants’ varying experiences of maintaining aspects of their cultural identities while engaging with Indonesian culture and language. Participants perceived social interaction as supporting their Bahasa Indonesia development by providing opportunities for communication, meaning negotiation, and feedback. Cultural adaptation was also described as shaping their opportunities to engage with Indonesian language and culture in everyday contexts.
