Abstract

Interpretations of the verses on reconciliation are often approached from a contextual perspective. Ali al-Ṣābūnī, known for his contextual approach to exegesis, was born amid the Syrian conflict. This study will focus on how al-Ṣābūnī interprets the verses of ṣulh  (reconciliation) and how he bridges the relationship between the text and social reality. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive method, utilizing documentary data collection techniques, and applies Karl Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge analytical framework. The research findings indicate that al-Ṣābūnī interprets the verses on sulh by compiling the opinions of earlier exegetes without favoring any one of them, resulting in a more neutral and moderate interpretation. Al-Ṣābūnī offers two practical approaches to reconciliation: negotiation and agreement and warfare. The discussion of warfare, which occupies a larger portion, serves as an expression born from his socio-intellectual context as a scholar living amidst the tensions in Syria. Thus, the Tafsir Rawāi’ al-Bayān is understood as a product of knowledge that takes the form of both ideology and utopia in guiding and shaping an ideal Muslim community to resolve conflicts.
