Abstract

Learning innovation is one of the important things that must be done in biology learning activities. Learning innovation is also very important to support sustainable development programs, especially for indicators of improving the quality of education. This study aims to analyze the development trend of innovation in biology learning to support sustainable development programs through a literature review. The research method used the PRISMA systematic review approach through a comprehensive literature search from the Google Scholar database. The inclusion criteria in this study were that articles were taken from the Google Scholar database in the period 2019-2024, articles were relevant to the research topic and field of biology, and articles were available in full access, while the exclusion criteria were the opposite of the inclusion criteria. The initial identification resulted in 43 articles, which then went through the evaluation and content analysis stages, resulting in 9 articles. Articles were analyzed based on year of publication, type of innovation, and level of education. The novelty of this article lies in its comprehensive mapping of innovations in biology education with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the development of an integrative framework that links biology competencies and sustainability competencies. The findings of the literature review revealed that the trend of developing innovations in biology learning increased significantly. Innovation is proven to be able to support sustainable development programs in terms of improving the quality of education and managing environmental sustainability. Learning innovation is dominated by the development of learning resources in the form of teaching materials for students. This finding also shows that the publication of innovation studies has been carried out at various levels of education equally. The contribution of this study is expected to provide recommendations and motivation for teachers to integrate the latest innovations in biology learning activities while supporting sustainable development programs at various levels of education.

Abstract

The problem of increasing waste volume and low awareness of waste management shows a gap between expectations and reality, especially among students. This study aims to analyze the level of sustainability awareness of students at Alalak 1 Public High School in ecosystem learning in terms of knowledge, awareness, attitude, and participation. This quantitative descriptive study involved 52 tenth-grade students through knowledge tests and questionnaires. Based on the diagram, the highest level of ecosystem literacy among students was in the structural category (56%), followed by multidimensional (36%), functional (8%). The results of the analysis show that the level of sustainable awareness is in the high category with an average of 82.26%. Students have a good understanding, positive attitudes, and active involvement in environmental management, although the consistency of concrete actions still needs to be strengthened. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating sustainability values into biology learning to shape a generation with ecological awareness and responsibility towards the environment.

Abstract

Abstract. Scientific literacy plays a crucial role in enabling students to understand, evaluate, and respond to scientific issues that affect society. However, findings from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) indicate that the scientific literacy level of Indonesian students remains relatively low. This study aimed to investigate the improvement of students’ scientific literacy through the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) oriented toward Socioscientific Issues (SSI) in the topic of Environmental Change. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method with a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. A MANOVA test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating that the SSI-based PBL model significantly enhanced students’ scientific literacy. These findings demonstrate that SSI-oriented PBL is effective in improving scientific literacy while fostering students’ awareness of the importance of protecting the environment from the negative impacts of environmental change.
