Abstract

The integration of technology in subtitling practices has become increasingly significant, with various tools enhancing the quality and efficiency of audiovisual translation. Among these tools, Aegisub software stands out as a popular choice, particularly among fansub translators, due to its user-friendly interface and rich features. This study aims to explore the implementation of Aegisub in a subtitling course at the English Literature Department of UIN Alauddin, focusing on the experiences of fifth-semester students. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and questionnaires, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the students' challenges and successes while using the software. The findings reveal that while students effectively applied Aegisub to create subtitles, they encountered both technical and linguistic challenges. Technical issues included timing, typesetting, and codifying, while linguistic difficulties involved diction choices, equivalence, and translation strategies. Despite these challenges, the software's compatibility with various operating systems and its easy-to-follow instructions contributed to increased student motivation and engagement in subtitling tasks. This study highlights the dual nature of Aegisub as a valuable educational tool that not only facilitates learning but also presents challenges that need to be addressed for optimal use in audiovisual translation education

Abstract

This research aims to compare the emotions depicted in the main character in the 1996 movie Matilda to the movie Matilda in 2022. This research investigates the emotional evolution that occurs from the movie Matilda 1996 to the movie Matilda 2022. This research is comparative diachronic research by Zepetnek theory and uses a character psychology approach in literary works. In obtaining data, this research was analyzed using Elizabeth B. Hurlok's theory of children's emotions and applying qualitative descriptive methods with notetaking as a research instrument. The results of this research show that there are types of emotions children get from the character Matilda: emotions of anger, joy or happiness, grief, curiosity, fear and affection. Therefore, the researchers concluded that the emotions that occur in the character Matilda from the 1996 movie Matilda to the movie Matilda 2022 show that Matilda 2022 is more aggressive, more expressive, and braver than the movie Matilda 1996. Overall, this research reveals evolution of emotions that are influenced by the author's mindset towards children's characters related to current developments.

Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of the heroine in the movie Wonder Woman (2017) directed by Patty Jenkins by applying Maureen Murdock’s theory of The Heroine’s Journey (1990). The study examines how the main character, Diana Prince, reflects the stages of the heroine’s journey and embodies female empowerment within a patriarchal society. The movie presents a woman who’s strong, courageous, compassionate, and morally conscious, offering a perspective on heroism that integrates feminine and masculine values. This research employs qualitative descriptive method. The primary data are taken from the dialogues and scenes of Wonder Woman (2017), while the secondary data come from books, journals, and previous studies related to feminism, gender representation, and literary theory. The analysis is conducted using the eight stages of Murdock’s model: separation from the feminine, identification with the masculine, road of trials, illusory boon of success, spiritual aridity, initiation and descent, reconnection with feminine, and integration of masculine and feminine. The findings show that Diana Prince undergoes all stages of the heroine’s journey. She begins by leaving Themyscira and her mother, symbolizing separation from the feminine world. She later adopts masculine traits through battle and leadership but realizes that physical strength alone cannot create peace. After experiencing loss and despair, she reconnects with feminine values such as empathy and love as her true sources of power. In the end, she integrates both aspects, achieving balance and completeness as a heroine. This research concludes that Wonder Woman (2017) effectively represents modern female heroism that challenges patriarchal norms.

Abstract

Background. Theatre has long been a powerful medium for cultural expression, offering a space where social realities, identities, and ideologies are negotiated and contested. As a form of performance, theatre allows for the exploration of complex themes such as power, gender, race, and class, providing insights into the dynamics of cultural change. In today’s globalized world, where cultural identities are continuously reshaped, the role of theatre as a space for cultural negotiation is more significant than ever. Purpose. This research seeks to investigate how theatre functions as a medium for negotiating social identity and power in contemporary contexts. The primary aim of this study is to examine how performance, through theatre, mediates and challenges cultural identities within specific social spaces. The research explores how theatrical performances facilitate cultural negotiations and offer critical commentary on societal issues such as identity formation, power structures, and social relations. Method. This study employs a qualitative research approach, utilizing case studies of selected theatre performances from various cultural contexts. The research combines textual analysis of performance scripts with observations of live performances, focusing on the themes of identity, power, and social space. Results. The study finds that theatre serves as an active site for cultural negotiation, where performances reflect and challenge societal norms, fostering dialogue around issues of identity and power. Theatre provides a dynamic space for addressing the complexities of social relations and cultural change. Conclusion. Theatre remains a vital medium for negotiating cultural identities and power structures. Its potential to challenge dominant narratives and promote social reflection highlights its enduring significance in contemporary cultural discourse.
