Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading skills of Class XI APH 1 students at SMK Wiratama 45.2 Wonosobo by applying the Detailed Reading technique. Initial observations revealed that students struggled to understand English texts, had limited vocabulary, and lacked motivation to learn due to monotonous teaching methods. To address these issues, the researcher employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach in two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data collection instruments included pre- and post-tests, observations, interviews, and documentation. The results showed significant improvement in students' reading ability after implementing the Detailed Reading technique. The average pre-test score of 57.86 increased to 64.82 in the first post-test cycle and increased again in the second. The Detailed Reading technique was effective in helping students understand text content more deeply, enrich vocabulary, and increase interest in and active participation in English learning. This study concludes that using the Detailed Reading technique can significantly improve students' reading ability and is an effective strategy for teaching English at the vocational high school level.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of multimodal texts in enhancing students' attention span in reading performance. This study involves 32 students at SMK Andalusia Wonosobo. This research uses a quantitative method with an experimental research design and data collection techniques in the form of tests, documentation, and hypothesis testing. The results of this research show that the experimental group achieved more effective learning outcomes, as well as showing a contrasting difference with the control class. The T-test result was 0.039. The hypothesis was accepted because T-test was less than 0.05. Moreover, the coefficient of determination value of 0.502 (50.2%) can indicate that multimodal text is sufficiently effective in enhancing students' attention span during reading performance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implications of digital communication in expanding the definition of text from linguistic and cultural studies perspectives, focusing on Eid al-Fitr greetings in 2026 as the object of analysis. Traditionally, text has been understood as a linear linguistic structure centered on verbal elements. However, the rapid development of digital technology has transformed communication practices into multimodal forms that integrate various semiotic resources, including visuals, colour, typography, layout, audio, and animation. This study employs a qualitative approach using Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) to investigate how meaning is constructed through the interaction of these semiotic modes in digital greeting messages. The findings reveal that text can no longer be confined to a purely verbal entity but must be understood as a complex and dynamic semiotic ensemble. Meaning is produced through the orchestration of multiple modes that function simultaneously and interdependently. Visual elements, such as religious symbols, colour schemes, and compositional design, play a dominant role in shaping audience interpretation and emotional engagement, often preceding verbal processing. Additionally, the study highlights the significant role of users within digital ecosystems as active producers (prosumers) who creatively combine semiotic resources to express religious identity, cultural values, and social relationships. Furthermore, digital Eid greetings function not only as religious expressions but also as social practices that maintain and strengthen interpersonal connections in virtual spaces. This transformation indicates a broader paradigm shift in communication, where texts become participatory, multimodal, and context-dependent. Consequently, this study contributes theoretically to the redefinition of text in the digital era and emphasizes the importance of multimodal approaches in analyzing contemporary communication practices.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays a vital role in supporting students' language skills, especially in English learning at the elementary school level. However, many students still struggle with memorizing and understanding English vocabulary due to monotonous and conventional teaching methods. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using English songs as a teaching medium to improve students’ vocabulary mastery and learning motivation. It employed a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design involving all fifth-grade students of MI Ma’arif Surengede Kertek in the academic year 2024/2025, using total sampling technique. The experimental class was taught using several English songs by DJ Raphi, such as Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes, Move It, Superstar, and If You're Happy and You Know it, while the control class was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and observation sheets, then analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25 covering validity, reliability, normality, homogeneity, paired sample t-test, and independent sample t-test. The analysis results showed a significant improvement in the experimental group’s post-test scores compared to both their pre-test scores and the control group’s scores, confirming that the use of English songs effectively enhances students’ vocabulary mastery and learning motivation, with statistical tests.
