Abstract

This study employs semantic component analysis and lexicalization theory to conduct a comparative analysis of the semantic components and lexicalization patterns of “cry” type verbs in English and Chinese. The findings reveal that these verbs in both languages exhibit both universality and specificity in their semantic components and lexicalization patterns. The core semantic components determine the semantic field of synonymous verbs, while peripheral components differentiate their nuances. Furthermore, “cry” type verbs in both languages follow the lexicalization pattern of “action + manner + cause + X”. This study advances the semantic and lexicalization analysis of “cry” type verbs in English and Chinese, offering novel theoretical and translational insights. Through systematic examination of their semantic components and lexicalization patterns, it enables more precise cross-linguistic understanding and application in translation practice.

Abstract

Motivational languaging activities (MLAs) encourage learners to externalize their self-perceptions through oral or written forms and promote learners’ cognitive development. However, limited research has investigated the impact of MLAs on learners’ L2 motivation. To bridge this gap, the present study sought to unveil the effect of MLAs on Chinese tertiary English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ motivation. Participants were 156 Chinese tertiary EFL learners divided into four groups: Experimental Group 1 (EG1), EG2, EG3, and a Control Group (CG). The experimental groups performed the MLAs in spoken, written, and spoken plus written forms respectively, while the CG received no MLA intervention. Motivational dynamics were measured with an adapted questionnaire administered at the beginning and end of the intervention, and qualitative data were collected through group discussions and opinion writing. The results revealed various degrees of enhancement in L2 motivation across the three experimental groups, highlighting the effectiveness of spoken MLAs in significantly increasing the Ought-to L2 Self among the participants.

Abstract

With the development of globalization, exchanges between countries in the political, economic and cultural fields have increased. Immigrant families in the world will use heritage languages to maintain and pass on their cultural identities, making society develop towards diversification. In view of the upsurge in heritage language research in recent years, it is necessary to sort out the research dynamics and development trends in this field. Based on the CNKI database, this paper collected 46 relevant literatures on heritage language research from 2009 to2024, adopted a scoping review method, and used tools such as CiteSpace and Excel to sort out its development status and trends. The study found that: 1) The research on heritage language has gradually increased, especially reaching a peak in 2023, showing its attention in the academic community; 2) The research revealed many hot topics, including the language acquisition and development of heritage language, the identity and motivation research of heritage language learners, the policy support for the heritage language, and the impact of the social language environment on heritage language; 3) Taking 2015 and 2020 as the nodes, the research can be divided into three stages: the starting stage, preliminary exploration and rapid development; 4) The sudden increase in keywords such as heritage language, identity, and family reflects the changes in the attention of the academic community to heritage language, which may have a profound impact on education, policy and social culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivational dynamics of English majors by integrating retrospective plotting, interviews, and narrative inquiry. Through triangulation, the research identifies key patterns and underlying causes of motivational shifts among three learners, proposing targeted strategies for remotivation. Findings reveal that English majors’ motivational trajectories exhibit marked dynamic complexity and individual variation, shaped by a multifaceted system of interacting factors—including teacher influence, academic performance, assessment pressures, emotional states, and career prospects. The study highlights the importance of understanding these dynamics to support learners effectively. Practical implications suggest that educators can foster remotivation by guiding students toward constructive attribution patterns, regulating academic emotions, enhancing self-regulatory skills, and clarifying future aspirations.

Abstract

In the 21st century, China’s developing international stature has sparked increased global interest in its governance principles and practices. This has necessitated the effective translation of Chinese political literature to facilitate cross-cultural understanding. This study aims to explore the translation strategies of Chinese political discourse, focusing on the series of Understanding Contemporary China through the lens of Edward T. Hall’s high-low context culture theory. The research takes a qualitative approach, employing contrastive analysis methodology. It investigates a total of 98 Chinese expressions characterized by Chinese rich cultural connotations, drawn from the selected series. The foreignization strategy seeks to preserve the cultural integrity of the source language through literal translation supplemented by explanatory annotations. In contrast, domestication reinterprets the original expressions to align with the cultural norms of the target language, employing free translation and semantic adaptation. This study enhances our comprehension of translation dynamics between high-context and low-context cultures, while simultaneously providing critical perspectives on the international propagation of Chinese political philosophy. In doing so, it fosters more effective intercultural dialogue and contributes to the reduction of cross-cultural misinterpretations.

Abstract

This study investigated the motivated participation in spoken English learning among 148 Chinese tertiary English majors through a questionnaire survey grounded in Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System framework. Descriptive statistics revealed two key dimensions of motivation: 1) the oral motivated self system, where participants demonstrated a high level of Ideal Oral Self, Group, and Peer, alongside a medium level of Ought-to Oral Self, Oral Learning Experience, and Class; and 2) motivated classroom participation, marked by a high level of Group and Peer and a medium level of Class. Independent samples t-tests identified no significant differences across six motivational factors between freshmen-sophomores or sophomores-juniors, but freshmen exhibited significantly stronger Class Environment engagement than juniors, indicating a decline in structured classroom motivation with academic progression. These findings emphasize the centrality of peer collaboration and ideal self-imagery in sustaining motivation while advocating for curriculum reforms to address declining classroom engagement in advanced cohorts. The study provides actionable insights for educators to design peer-driven activities and adaptive pedagogical strategies, ultimately enhancing oral proficiency and overall language competence among English majors.

Abstract

Guided by translanguaging, this study explores the linguistic landscape in Quanzhou and its implications for international Chinese education. The findings indicate that Quanzhou’s linguistic landscape is dominated by Chinese-English bilingualism, while also featuring a variety of minority languages, reflecting the city’s internationalization and cultural inclusiveness. In terms of presentation forms, purely linguistic modes and language-plus-image modes are roughly balanced, with equivalent design strategies occupying an absolute dominant position, ensuring clear communication of information. Functionally, the linguistic landscape is primarily driven by commercial advertising, while also serving purposes such as direction and public services, as well as cultural dissemination. Through a systematic analysis of these characteristics, this study not only provides a new empirical case for the study of linguistic landscapes in Chinese cities, deepening theoretical understanding, but also transforms abstract linguistic findings into concrete teaching strategies and curriculum suggestions. It offers significant practical insights for international Chinese educators to optimize teaching content and methods, thereby enhancing the practicality and effectiveness of instruction.
