Abstract

Corrosion is the main causes of construction failure of a bridge. Isolating the metal from corrosion substances is the most effective way to prevent corrosion in this construction. The usage of natural corrosion inhibitor is an alternative way to achieve that goal. Natural substance is chosen as an alternative because it is safe and widely available, biodegradable, low cost, and environmentally friendly. This work was conducted to study the inhibition behavior of water hyacinth extract. Chemical compounds in water hyacinth are cellulose and lignin. Lignin is an oxidation agent. This work use carbon steel SS400 and the effect of water hyacinth extract to the corrosion was studied. The works were conducted in liquid base and liquid acid with the variable of inhibitor concentration. Analysis was conducted by using weigh loss method and in base liquid the best concentration was 0.20 M as 0.0020 mpy and in acid liquid as 0.0047 mpy.The decrease occur because the extract works by forming thin layer (investigated on SEM analysis) or complex compound, which adsorb on metal surface as protection layer which can prevent the reaction of metal with its environment.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find the ideal current and time used during the plating process, because in every industry the most frequent problems are the thickness that coats the material and the corrosion rate of the material that causes the material to become damaged or no good. This study uses SGD400 carbon steel and zinc as a coating. The research was carried out on a tank containing various kinds of chemical liquids and using electric current as conductivity for the coating media. Analysis using layer thickness measurement using vernier caliper measuring instrument and weight loss method. The results obtained from searching the current and the ideal time using a current of 900 A and a time of 60 minutes is 0.015 mm or 15 μm thick and the SST test (Salt Spray Test) at 72 hours No White Rust and 168 Hours No Red Rust. And good coating results can be seen in microstructure testing using keyence microscope media

Abstract

Surface roughness of a product plays an important role, especially for materials such as SUS 304 steel which is now widely used in a variety of industrial needs. Determination of the turning parameters or the appropriate type of cooling fluids are very important to obtain the desired surface roughness. The aim of the study was to determine the ideal value of feeding (f) and the ideal type of cooling fluids in the turning process of SUS 304 steel. The feedrate parameters used were 0.11 mm/rev, 0.15 mm/rev, and 0.19 mm/rev, whereas the types of cooling fluids used are Fumio Lube Fumicool 794 soluble oil and Suncut 16S lubricant oil. Surface roughness results are obtained through testing using a surface roughness measuring instrument. From the predetermined parameters were obtained the smallest roughness value on the feedrate was 0.11 mm/rev using Suncut 16S lubricant oil with a result of 0.770 µm, while the largest roughness value on the feedrate was 0.19 mm/rev using Fumio Lube Fumicool 794 soluble oil with a result of 3.942µm.

Abstract

Research has been conducted on the analysis of corrosion rate of zinc electroplating on AISI1045 steel in a corrosive medium of 3.5% NaCl and 5% NaCl. The electroplating time variationused is 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 15 minutes. Corrosion rate was carried out by soaking steelfor 174 hours in NaCl medium and calculated by weight loss method. The ideal time in the Znelectroplating process is 10 minutes in 3.5% NaCl solution with a weight reduction of 0.023grams and a corrosion rate of 1.670723071 mpy, while in the Zn electroplating process for 15minutes in a 5% NaCl solution the weight reduction is 0.033 grams and the corrosion rate is2,386747245 mpy. The test results on microstructure using a metallurgical microscope can beconcluded that AISI 1045 steel without electroplating is easily exposed to corrosion comparedto the Zn electroplating process.

Abstract

AISI 1045 carbon steel is being used as the main raw material vehicle engine components such asshafts, spur gears, pistons and connecting rods. Spur gear is one component that experiences themost wear and tear caused by the properties of hardness and wear resistance are poor. The impactof the spur gear wear becomes damaged and does not function normally. To minimize wear of thenecessary process of hardening heat treatment at a temperature of 845˚C was detained for 60minutes, then quenching with brine and continued with the process of austempering at 295˚Ctemperature variation, 330˚C, and 365˚C and the holding time 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90minutes. Use the specimen 1 which is raw material of AISI 1045 steel as the compare resultswithout heat treatment. Tests conducted is hardness test, test microstructure and wear-resistanttest. The test results showed increased to 200 HB hardness of HB 182 initially, rose by 9.89% onthe specimen number 3. Testing of wear showed the lowest yield value of 5.5643747 abradedmaterial volume mm3 / mm and a specific wear value of 0.006603292 mm2 / Kg in the specimenNo. 3. Changes occur on the microstructure of ferrite and perlite into martensite and bainitemicrostructure after heat treatment in this study.
