Abstract

Phatic Speech Acts are communication strategy that is a characteristic of a culture. Phatic speech acts have an important role in the communication process in Indonesia as the efforts made to demonstrate social identity and maintain social rapport in society. Therefore, this research discusses the types and function of phatic speech acts found in the daily conversation of English-speaking Indonesian students. The data source for this research is English-speaking Indonesian students at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University, Madiun Campus. This research data was collected by using the non-participation observation method with the recording, note- taking, and role-play techniques. The findings of this research are a classification of 11 types of phatic speech acts consisting of (1) Addressing, (2) Expressing Empathy, (3) Gossiping, (4) Complimenting, (5) Giving Remarks, (6) Advising, (7) Offering, (8) Requesting, (9) Inviting, (10) Mocking, and (11) Swearing. The functions of phatic speech acts are: (1) Expressing hospitality, (2) Showing attention, (3) Making conversation more interesting, (4) Please others, (5) Showing concern, (6) Expressing empathy (7) Showing politeness, (8) Expressing social attachment, (9) Expressing solidarity, (10) Mocking, and (11) Building intimacy. The phatic speech act of addressing is the type of speech act that is most frequently found. On the contrary, the phatic speech act of complimenting is rarely used. The embodiment of the phatic speech act of addressing is dominantly carried out by students in daily conversations since it reflects the cultural identity of Indonesians that is friendly and warm. The phatic speech act of complimenting is not used frequently because of its conditional in nature. The complimenting requires the speaker to have an advantage that is worthy of praise, even though the praise is not sincere. The benefit of this research is to know that in daily communication, phatic speech acts could be implemented for smooth communication.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out and classify the types of commissive speech acts used by the characters in Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie. The study explained the functions of each type of commissive speech act based on the contexts as well. The method applied was the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that contain commissive speech acts. Hereafter, the technique of data analysis was based on Kreidler's (1998) classification of commissive speech acts. The next step was explaining the functions of each type of commissive speech acts based on the pragmatic contexts. The research found seven types of commissive speech acts used by the characters in the movie of Kung Fu Panda 2, such as promises, pledges, agrees, refuses, volunteers, offers, and threats. The most dominant type of commissive speech act used by the characters was the act of agreeing. The least type of commissive speech act used by the characters was the act of pledging.Keywords: Pragmatics, speech acts, commissive utterances

Abstract

The research is entitled “Directives Speech Act in The Utterances of Characters in The Movie Entitled Wish Dragon” The research aimed to find out and classify the types of directive speech acts used by the characters in the movie of Wish Dragon and to explain the functions of each type of directive speech act based on the contexts. The method applied was the descriptive qualitative method.  The data of this research were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that contain directive speech acts. The technique of collecting data was conducted by collecting the data from the Wish Dragon movie, classifying types of directives speech act, and the last, describing the function of each type of directive speech act. Furthermore, the technique of data analysis was based on Kreidler's (1998) classification of directive speech acts. The types are commands, requests, and suggestions. The next step was explaining the functions of each type of directive speech acts based on the pragmatic contexts. There were three types of directives speech acts used by the characters in the movie of Wish Dragon, such as command, request, and suggestion. The command functioned to demand, to direct, to order, and to forbid. The request functioned to ask, to beseech, and to entreat. The suggestion functioned to recommend, to advise, to counsel, to caution, and to warn. The most dominant type of directive speech act used by the characters was the directive speech act command. It could be influenced by the social status between one and another character. Some character who conveyed the command has higher social status or authority.
