Abstract

Expressive language development is an essential aspect of early childhood development as it relates to children’s ability to express ideas, feelings, and experiences verbally. However, studies examining the needs of children’s storybooks from parents’ perspectives remain limited. This study aims to analyze the needs of early childhood storybooks in supporting children’s expressive language development based on parents’ perspectives. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using a needs analysis design. The participants were 20 parents of children aged 4–6 years. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that parents need storybooks that use simple language, provide attractive illustrations, present contextual stories, and contain moral values. These characteristics help children enrich their vocabulary, answer simple questions, retell stories, and express their opinions and feelings verbally. The novelty of this study lies in identifying the characteristics of storybooks needed to support expressive language development from the perspective of parents as the primary facilitators of children’s language stimulation. Storybooks that meet users’ needs have the potential to support young children’s expressive language development and can serve as a basis for developing more effective children’s storybooks.
