Abstract

Coastal schools are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including tidal flooding, erosion, and seawater intrusion, which disrupt educational processes and compromise community resilience. Strengthening environmental literacy within the eco-school framework is therefore essential to develop adaptive knowledge, critical thinking, and sustainable behavior among students. This community service project implemented a Green Literacy Bootcamp at SMP Negeri 25 Semarang, involving 45 students identified as prospective Green Warriors. The program comprised three phases: a two-day intensive training, a three-month follow-up, and a final reflection. Activities included communication workshops, creative campaigns, eco-project simulations, and student-led projects on waste management, urban farming, and tidal flood mitigation. The program was evaluated using a pre-post environmental literacy test and structural model analysis, complemented by a satisfaction survey. Results showed a substantial improvement in environmental literacy, with the largest gains observed in environmental hope and cognitive skills. Students also reported high satisfaction with the learning experience. This study contributes to the field of environmental education by offering a validated and replicable model for strengthening multidimensional environmental literacy and supporting eco-school development in coastal communities facing climate change challenges.

Abstract

Background: Several studies have reported that biology education students' scientific literacy in Indonesia remains low, with STEM learning offered as one solution. However, STEM implementation in higher education remains limited, particularly in biology education.  Objectives: This study aims to develop STEM-based worksheets that are valid, practical, and effective in improving scientific literacy skills. Methods: This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach following the ADDIE model. It involved 36 first-year students in the Biology Education Program at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Data were gathered through observation, questionnaires, and pre- and post-tests, then analyzed using paired t-tests, Cohen’s d effect size, and N-Gain. Results: The worksheet was rated valid with a score of 0.97, while the carbon dioxide detector scored 0.98 (validity). Practicality was rated at 99.81% (highly practical) by observers and 99.19% (highly practical) by students through questionnaires. A paired t-test with a two-tailed significance level (Sig.) of 0.00 < 0.05, showed a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores. Cohen’s d effect size was 3.93 (very large), and N-Gain was 0.77 (high gain). Conclusion: STEM-based worksheets are valid, practical, and effective tools for improving students’ scientific literacy skills regarding respiratory rate.

Abstract

This study examined the structural relationships among Dark Triad traits, self-esteem, and loneliness, with particular emphasis on the mediating role of self-esteem. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed, involving 165 prospective science teachers (M_age = 18.53, SD = 1.10) enrolled in the Science Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang. Participants meeting predefined inclusion criteria voluntarily completed three validated self-report measures: the Short Dark Triad (SD3), the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and hierarchical regression analysis. The results indicated that Dark Triad traits negatively predicted self-esteem (β = −0.93, p < .001) and positively predicted loneliness (β = 0.97, p < .001), whereas self-esteem negatively predicted loneliness (β = −0.96, p < .001). When self-esteem was included in the model, the direct effect of Dark Triad traits on loneliness decreased (β = 0.63), and the Sobel test confirmed a significant partial mediation effect (Z = 6.13, SE = 0.04, p < .001). These findings suggest that self-esteem functions as a protective psychological mechanism that attenuates the adverse effects of Dark Triad traits on loneliness. Accordingly, interventions aimed at strengthening self-esteem may contribute to enhancing the social and emotional well-being of prospective science educators.
