Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by impaired carbohydrate metabolism and persistent hyperglycemia resulting from the body's inability to regulate insulin secretion effectively. This condition can lead to various long-term complications associated with abnormalities in protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism. One of the chronic complications of Diabetes Mellitus is a diabetic foot ulcer. Modern wound care has emerged as a more effective approach than conventional wound management because it maintains a moist wound environment that promotes healing. This study analyzed the effectiveness of modern wound care in promoting the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. This literature review used a systematic review approach based on the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) framework. The inclusion criteria comprised experimental studies published between 2021 and 2025, written in either Indonesian or English, available as original research articles, and accessible in full-text format. The researchers searched for articles in the ScienceDirect, PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases and identified 1,502 articles from ScienceDirect, 1,710 from Google Scholar, 13,555 from ProQuest, and 50 from PubMed. After applying the inclusion criteria, the researchers selected 10 articles for review. The review analyzed these articles by identifying similarities and differences, providing critical perspectives, making comparisons, and summarizing the findings. The literature review found that various types of modern dressings, including silver dressings, hydrocolloid dressings, epidermal growth factor-loaded carboxymethylcellulose (EGF-CMC) hydrogel, calcium alginate ZnO nanoparticles, and umbilical cord blood platelet lysate (UCB-PL) gel, effectively promote the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the body cannot effectively use available insulin or the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin. Factors such as physical activity, motivation, and self-efficacy influence patients’ ability to perform diabetes self-management. This quantitative study determined the correlation between self-efficacy, motivation, and physical activity among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by employing a cross-sectional design. A total of 91 respondents were selected through purposive sampling. The resarchers used the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES) to measure self-efficacy, the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) to assess motivation, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to evaluate physical activity. The result showed that most respondents had high self-efficacy (71.4%), poor motivation (58.2%), and moderate levels of physical activity (7.4%). Spearman’s Rank test reveales a significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and physical activity (p = 0.043; r = 0.213), indicating that higher self-efficacy was associated with higher levels of physical activity, although the strength of the relationship was weak. In contrast, motivation was not significantly associated with physical activity (p = 0.214). Future researchers should consider using different research approaches to provide a clearer understanding of factors that may influence physical activity, such an age, daily routines, family support, and physical condition.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from disturbances in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. This study determined the correlation among knowledge, attitudes, family support, and adherence to foot care among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus at Halmahera Community Health Center. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design involving 78 respondents. The researchers used the Diabetic Foot Knowledge Scale (DFKS) to measure knowledge, the Diabetic Foot Behavior Checklist (DFBC) to assess foot care adherence, the Hensarling Diabetes Family Support Scale (HDFSS) to evaluate family support, and an attitude questionnaire to measure respondents' attitudes. The results showed that most respondents were older than 65 years (56.4%), female (52 respondents; 66.7%), had completed elementary school as their highest level of education (35 respondents; 44.9%), were unemployed (59 respondents; 75.6%), and had lived with diabetes for a prolonged period (37 respondents; 47.4%). Spearman’s rank correlation test revealed a significant positive relationship between knowledge and adherence to foot care (p = 0.000; r = 0.743), indicating a strong correlation. The test also showed a significant positive relationship between attitude and adherence to foot care (p = 0.001; r = 0.377), although the correlation was weak. In addition, family support was significantly and positively associated with adherence to foot care (p = 0.000; r = 0.499), with a moderate correlation strength. Future researchers are encouraged to investigate the effects of educational interventions on foot care adherence among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
