Abstract

Family-based daʿwah represents a foundational yet undertheorized dimension of Islamic mission studies. This study investigates how Muslim families in urban Bandung, Indonesia, implement family-based daʿwah to cultivate a marhamah (compassion-based) ecosystem through their everyday practices. Employing Alfred Schutz's interpretive phenomenological analysis, this study conducted in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation with twenty purposively selected Muslim families meeting criteria of marriage duration, child-rearing stage, and active daʿwah engagement. Four interrelated themes emerged: (1) internalization of Qur'anic values in domestic contexts; (2) affective function as the relational infrastructure of marhamah; (3) dialogic and exemplary daʿwah communication practices; and (4) the social radiation of family-formed compassion values into the wider community. These findings challenge prior studies that position the family primarily as a normative unit of Islamic law, by demonstrating that the family operates as a dynamic agent of daʿwah-driven social transformation. The study introduces the 'marhamah ecosystem' as a new analytical framework integrating Islamic theology, communication theory, and family sociology within the field of daʿwah studies ('ilm al-da'wah). Practical implications are drawn for Muslim family counselling, Islamic education policy, and community daʿwah programming in rapidly urbanizing Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the global evolution of scholarly discussions on the integration of local culture into Islamic da‘wah and communication practices through a bibliometric and network analysis approach. The research employs a bibliometric study design using 60 Scopus-indexed publications from 2009–2025 as the primary data source. The data were analyzed through co-authorship, co-occurrence, and network visualization techniques to identify thematic trends, collaboration patterns, and conceptual developments in culturally adaptive Islamic communication studies. These patterns reflect a significant increase in publications after 2020, with Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom emerging as the leading contributors and international collaboration hubs. The network analysis identifies five major thematic clusters: cultural adaptation in da‘wah, digital Islamic communication, local wisdom and religious identity, transnational Islamic movements, and hybrid cultural expressions. The study further demonstrates a growing transnational convergence of culturally adaptive da‘wah strategies across Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In addition, this research introduces the Cultural Adaptation Model of Islamic Communication (CAMI), a conceptual framework explaining how Islamic da‘wah integrates local cultural values and community communication practices while maintaining universal Islamic ethical principles. The study is limited by its reliance on publications indexed exclusively in the Scopus database, which may not fully represent the broader spectrum of global Islamic communication scholarship. Practically, the findings provide a strategic foundation for developing contextual, inclusive, and culturally responsive da‘wah models in multicultural societies. The originality of this study lies in its integration of global bibliometric analysis with the development of the CAMI framework within the field of Islamic communication and da‘wah studies.

Abstract

Indonesia’s religious and cultural plurality requires a da'wah paradigm that can transform diversity into social cohesion. This need becomes more urgent amid local religious tensions, digital sectarian narratives, and the growing demand for institutional mediation. However, studies on the Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB) mostly examine it as a state-supported harmony forum. They rarely analyze FKUB as a multicultural da'wah agency that operates da'wah syuubiyah wa qabailiyah. This study aims to reconstruct the operational paradigm of da'wah syuubiyah wa qabailiyah practiced by FKUB Bandung Regency. It also evaluates its models, strategies, and contributions to social cohesion. This study employed a qualitative single-case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with twelve informants, and analysis of FKUB program documents. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through data condensation, data display, and conclusion verification. The findings show that FKUB Bandung Regency develops three interrelated models of da'wah syuubiyah wa qabailiyah. These are a dialogical model rooted in Sundanese local wisdom, a community-based empowerment model through moderation agents, and a multi-stakeholder collaborative model. These models strengthen social cohesion through conflict prevention, bridging social capital, inclusive national identity, and counter-narratives to extremism. The study contributes to Islamic Da'wah Science by extending da'wah syuubiyah wa qabailiyah from a normative concept into an institutional and sociological framework for multicultural da'wah in Indonesia’s plural democracy.
