Abstract

This research analyses gender communication practices in the film Dua Garis Bisu and Dua Hati Biru (2024) by Retna Ginatri S. Noer by combining Deborah Tannen's Genderlect Style theory and Ruth Wodak's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The study is motivated by the fact that gender differences influence language styles and represent values, ideologies, and gender issues in character dialogues. Primary data in the form of film narratives and secondary data from literature reviews were analysed on three components: main ideas, discursive strategies, and denotative and connotative meanings. The findings show that the film writer constructs the Genderlect style as a dynamic discursive practice where gender identity, power relations, and social roles are continuously negotiated. Women are represented as relational subjects who maintain emotional connections and harmony, while men are positioned with expectations of authority, responsibility, and control. Gendered communication strategies function as both interaction styles and mechanisms of power legitimisation. The denotative and connotative meanings in dialogue reproduce and simultaneously challenge gender norms in the Indonesian context. This study asserts Genderlect Style as a symbolic arena for the meeting between gender tradition and contemporary relational dynamics.
