Abstract

The limited availability of land suitable for development has encouraged the utilization of alternative land, one of which is ex-mining land. Soil in ex-mining areas generally has low bearing capacity and therefore does not meet the technical requirements for construction subgrade. This study aimed to analyze the effect of adding fly ash and lime on increasing the bearing capacity of ex-mining soil in Gunung Sarik Village, Kuranji District, Padang City. The soil damples used were disturbed soils collected from the ex-mining area. Fly ash was obtained from the Teluk Sirih Steam Power Plant, West Sumatra, while quicklime was sourced from the Bukit Tui Factory, Pdang Panjang City. The research was conducted through laboratory testing including physical properties analysis, Proctor compaction test, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) laboratory testing based on ASTM D 1883-67 standards. The mixture variations consistes of 5% fly ash combined with 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12% lime. The addition of fly ash and lime positively influenced the increase in soil bearing capacity. The CBR value of native soil, Which was 10,37%, increased across all mixture variations. The highest increase was achieved with the combination of 5% fly ash and 12% lime, reaching a CBR value of 19,16%, followed by the mixture of 5% fly ash and 8% lime at 14,43%, and 5% fly ash with 4% lime at 14,21%. These results indicate thet the addition of fly ash and lime is effective in increasing the bearing capacity of ex-mining soil through the stabilization process, making the soil feasible for consideration as construction subgrade.

Abstract

Road on Simpang Kumpulan–Simpang Taman section at Km. 102+100 in Agam Regency is one of the vital transportation routes in West Sumatra that frequently experiences disruptions due to landslides. This study aims to evaluate the stability of the existing slope at the location. The evaluation was carried out using two approaches: manual calculation using the Fellenius Method and numerical analysis using Plaxis 2D software. Research data were obtained from field soil testing (N-SPT) and the geometry of the existing slope. The analysis results indicate that the existing slope is in an unstable condition. The Factor of Safety (FS) of the existing slope using the manual Fellenius Method was 0.9, while the analysis using Plaxis 2D yielded 1.167. Both values are below the minimum requirement specified by SNI 8460:2017 (FS ≥ 1.5). This study also compares the results of manual calculations and numerical analysis, which show reasonably good agreement. The findings of this research are expected to provide recommendations regarding the safety level of slopes in landslide-prone areas and serve as a consideration for slope stabilization efforts in Agam Regency.

Abstract

The ex-mining land in Gunung Sarik, Padang City, has soil conditions with low shear strength due to structural degradation resulting from mining activities. This study aims to analyze the effect of stabilization using fly ash (Class F) and quicklime on the improvement of soil shear strength parameters (cohesion c and internal friction angle φ), with a specific focus on the effect of lime content variations (0%, 4%, 8%, 12%) at a constant fly ash content of 5%. The research methods included soil physical properties testing (moisture content, specific gravity, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits) and direct shear testing referring to ASTM/SNI standards. Based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), the soil was classified as high-plasticity gravelly elastic silt (MH) with a water content of 24.91% and a plasticity index of 15.71%. At 5% fly ash content, the addition of lime increased the cohesion value from 0.049 kg/cm² (0% lime) to 0.234 kg/cm² (8% lime) and the internal friction angle from 43.45° to 67.26°. However, at 12% lime addition, the cohesion value decreased to 0.140 kg/cm², while the internal friction angle increased to 76.77°. The increase in shear strength occurred due to the pozzolanic reaction between CaO from lime and SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ from fly ash, which formed cementitious compounds that bind soil particles. The optimum combination was obtained at a mixture of 5% fly ash + 8% lime. This study recommends the use of this combination for subgrade improvement in light to medium construction in ex-mining areas.
