Abstract

This study was conducted in response to the low level of student engagement in fourth grade PKn classes at UPTD SDN Banyuajuh 4, where initial observations showed that only 7 out of 9 students (approximately 33%) demonstrated active participation during learning activities. Findings from classroom observations and teacher interviews indicated that students tended to be passive, rarely participated in discussions, and experienced a teacher centered learning process dominated by lectures. Therefore, the research aimed to enhance student engagement through the implementation of storytelling as an instructional strategy. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach carried out in two cycles, each consisting of two meetings, following the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The participants were all nine fourth grade students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, while the analysis applied qualitative and simple quantitative descriptive methods. The findings revealed that storytelling effectively improved student engagement, with active participation escalating from 33% in the pre cycle stage to 67% in Cycle I and reaching 89% in Cycle II, thus achieving the success target.
